sanjay gupta who is live at the event for us. good morning, just set the scene. it is as laura mentioned the covid olympics and it is being held in a city under a state of emergency. >> reporter: yes, i mean the scene is that in many ways it is a tale of two cities. you know, you have excitement and you have anxiety. you have the excitement of the olympics for sure, but you have the anxiety of the fact that this is the first -- really the first global gathering of this size since the pandemic began. so athletes will be tested obviously during the olympics, but the public health officials are being tested as well. and it is challenging. as you point out, it is a state of emergency here, but let me show you the numbers. i don't know if you have a graph that we can put up. you have these peaks and valleys here in japan with regard to the covid numbers, that recent low followed by the peak of may 14th, that was just about a month ago. over the last month the numbers are going up and that has caused conste consternation. if you talk to people on the street, roughly 8

sanjay gupta is there on the ground in tokyo for you. thank you for staying up for us. what are you learning about this gymnast and what it could mean for the team? >> reporter: yeah, so this is another person who was tested here on the ground and that test came back positive. we're not certain whether or not she had been vaccinated. vaccines are not mandatory here, kate, for people within the village. though people do get vaccinated, it is not mandatory. we don't know that. and a person is asymptomatic and mild symptoms but have close contact with another athlete so the person that tested positive now in isolation and the person with the close contact now in quarentine and so it goes, kate, this is part of the issue here. they're doing very regular testing. i got tested to be here 96 hours before, 72 hours before and then when we landed. but these breakthrough infections, these infections that are occurring in vaccinated people, oftentimes with little or no symptoms, we're going to see how frequent they are, really within this olympic village. we haven't had a case stu

walensky there, sanjay gupta said the same on our air yesterday, that if you are vaccinated, that you people do, whether they get vaccinated themselves. but for us who are vaccinated, should we have a reasonable sense of comfort as to our own personal risk from the delta variant? >> those people who are vaccinated should feel very safe we are protected from severe illness due to the delta variant. it is extremely unlikely we're going to end up in the hospital or die. we are seeing more than 99% of people dying from coronavirus now are people who are not vaccinated. so that illustrates how well the vaccine protects against the delta variant. however, we don't know. and i think the cdc really needs to step up and do a better job of tracking breakthrough infections with the delta variant. it's believed that with the delta variant, you carry more virus in your nose. you're able to infect more people if you're unvaccinated. vaccination reduces the level of virus you carry. how much less are you able to infect others? we don't know. >> a lot of debate over mandating in schools, what's going
