parents should educate themselves on the cdc's recommendations for operations. parents can ask questions of administrators and learn how these steps can be implemented. parents should encourage children to wear masks when in public or indoor settings. finally, parents can protect their children by getting vaccinated themselves. this will create a protective bubble around their children who are not yet eligible for their own vaccine. as we approach the labor day holiday weekend, i want to share ways americans can keep their families and themselves safe. first, gathering with family and friends. remember spending time outdoors with others who are not vaccinated will prevent transmission. we have seen the vast majority of transmission takes place among unvaccinated people and closed indoor settings. when in public indoor settings, please wear a mask. as i said before, masks are not forever they are for now. given the high transmissibility of the delta variant and the significant community transmission, wearing a mask is the easiest way for anyone, regardless of you

one thing i'm watching for is can the cdc explain the endgame here? there is a general thinking among public health experts that this virus is going to be and do make and will not be eradicated. zero covid is not a feasible goal for the u.s. given how widely this virus has spread around the world. what is the endgame? is there a certain level of hospitalization and deaths that as a society we will find acceptable? is there a way to say that and how do we get to that point and what does life look like as far as are the vaccines alone enough to bring us there or will we have other non-fard -- other nonpharmaceutical interventions like masking and social distancing. it's a really tough situation and it some of the hardest challenges in public health messaging i've had to cover. host: the cdc reporting when it comes to those fully backslid in the u.s. that is still under 50%. what the likelihood of that number rising from there? andrew: there is some modest reason for optimism as far as we have seen in the last couple of weeks. a slight uptick in the numb

so the cdc guidance was really appropriate at the time. i think the issue with the guidance that was issued by the cdc in may is that it was blanket guidance for the entire country. and we know that the rates of transmission, the vaccination coverage in different parts of the country are different. >> dr. jha? >> my general take is that at the end of the day, guidance should be based on the fac on the ground as they are. and in may, when the cdc said vaccinated people are largely not getting infected, and they're not transmitting it to others, and, therefore, they don't have to be wearing a mask indoors, i thought that was right. one of the key points of a pandemic is that it is evolving, right, that the situation on the ground changes. evidence changes. data changes. and as it does, we want our public health agencies to update their guidance. to me, this is not a sharp turnabout. this is not a flip-flop. this is the evidence changed, so our recommendations changed. it's exactly what we want the cdc to be doing. >> guidance on masks has ch

why did it take so long to go to the cdc the moratorium? >> thing that the fact that the supreme court has ruled that way , we knowingly faced legal risk. supported extending the moratorium to july 31, the supreme court rule chose not to strike that down. the ruling said clearly that was because it was rolling off on july 31. extensions would require congressional authorization. those wordings are nothing special for us. those are something anybody here can read. i think what you saw was as the delta variant was worse, there was the passion to not only look for everything we knew we had the power to do. a lot of what he is doing is asking us to double check. also in terms of what he's asking us to do at the agencies. agencies have given more never -- narrow opinions on their authorities and powers. he is telling us to go back and push. this is not insignificant, one in three people are in states where they have some additional length of protection due to state and local moratoriums. the supreme court does not affect that. he is asking to ex

yesterday, the cdc reported 132,384 new cases of covid-19. the average represents an increase of nearly 24% from the prior seven day average. the average of admissions is about 9700, an increase of 31%. the seven-day average of daily deaths has also increased 22% from the prior seven days. we continue to see cases, hospitalizations, and deaths increase across the country, and now over 90% of counties in the united states are experiencing substantial or high transmission. as we have been saying, by far, those at highest risk remain people who have not yet been vaccinated. this week, we are taking two important steps in encouraging and improving vaccine protection for americans. first, for pregnant people who are at higher risk of severe illness from covid-19, we are strengthening guidance and recommending that all pregnant people or people thinking about becoming pregnant get vaccinated. we have new data that reaffirms the safety of vaccines for people who are pregnant, including early in pregnancy and around the time of conception. these data
