but fred grew up in spokane, talk about fred. >> fred's family ran a laundry in spokane down by the railroad tracks. they lived in an apartment over the laundry. it was a pretty rough neighborhood. it was largely immigrants from all over the world working on the railroad there. because it was very ethnically mixed, a lot of racial slurs got thrown around. fred was a young man, he did not like to fight. he was a gentle soft spoken man. he could not abide racial slurs. when they were hurled at him he would fight you. in fact he got in scraps with neighborhood kids he had to keep going to his father to try to get him by yet another pair of eyeglasses because he'd been in another fight. when the war broke out, fred immediately tried to enlist and went down to the service office in spokane and tried to enlist. he was told he could not do that he was an enemy alien, which shocked him. he spent the next year feeling terrible because all the other young men in spokane i got off to war. but then an early 1943 when the 442nd was created and became a member of k company. one of those that went up the m

in 1952, fred ross, who really nobody has heard of fred ross, and that's too bad, too, with a couple notable exceptions. fred ross was an enormously important community organizer and ran a group called the community service organization, which was almost exclusively in california. it was really the first sort of part of the mexican-american civil rights movement. in 1952, he went to san jose. he started doing what he did when he came to a new place, which was to hold house meetings. you invite a few people over, talk to them about what are their concerns, what are their needs, and try to get people engaged in collective community organizing. and he meets cesar chavez at a meeting at the chavez house. here's where we can tie into the legend nicely. part of the legend is fred ross wrote in his journal that night, i think i found the guy i'm looking for. that, you can find that quote in lots of books and lots of scholarly works, even, but, in fact, that's made up. i found the actual entry in fred ross' journal from that night, in which he says something very positive. he says, you know,

let's start with some good news as tropical storm fred or what was tropical storm fred has weakened quite a bit but it is expected to restrengthen as it moves through the warmer waters of the gulf of mexico likely, back up to a tropical storm as it approaches the border between alabama and mississippi on monday afternoon. so we will see some heavier rain in that area, along the gulf coast. but also, the panhandle of florida and the big bend of florida could end up with about five to eight inches of rai on the eastern side of this storm the next storm, tropical storm grace, it's looking like it wants to take the same exact track as fred, as it is right now forecast to maintain as a tropical storm but it's likely to weaken as it moves through cuba just like fred did either way, as we go to the end of next week, we we will likely see heavy rain across especially southern florida, that will make its way north. jose. >> dylan dreyer, thank you very much. >>> when we come back, third-vaccine doses are being administered for the first time today but many americans have already found ways to get
