he travels with the slave when he is in illinois. so hard and is actually an aristocratic figure who like lincoln is moving from kentucky into illinois. and he is just like, charismatic, very well educated. the thing i kind of relays when i was writing this book is it doesn't make a lot of pensive think of illinois being the northern states. think of it as a southern state. there is this area in the west includes missouri, includes kentucky, includes illinois. these are places where people have moved. they have moved and so there is a support and an appreciation of the idea of westward expansion that is really profound. almost nobody in illinois in the 1830s was born there. it is made up of people who have moved there. they have moved there for opportunity. the us-mexico war when it starts, it is so exciting for americans. a whole generation of young men including lincoln and including hearted were raised on stories of the mexican army during the revolution. the texas revolution as we all know, the men and the alamo were all killed.

let me say, i agree with the senator from illinois about the contribution of immigrants. and i listen very carefully as a border state senator, my state is 40% hispanic. i'm sure the senator from nevada has a large hispanic population. they are part of us. they are part of our great nation, to make tremendous contributions. hispanics in my state park patriots, they volunteer in disproportionate numbers to serve in the military. they are tightknit families, people of faith. they believe in hard work, and they believe in the american dream. i don't think it does any tribute to their contributions or sacrifice to say that people can come to this country without complying with our laws. i also joined in the senator's frustration about the inability to get anything substantially done in the space, but i don't think it is good enough to complain about how hard it is. we are all volunteers. what we have to do is do the hard work, and we have not done it since i have been here, to build that consensus to pass meaningful immigration reform. we need to do that. it's on us. we can't
