thanks for waking up get right meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking air qty conditions for us. >> we are going to see a lot of changes because of the caldor fire that continues to burn with very little containment and we are seeing some spots getting some improvement today in the north bay. you will have a chance to breathe some fresher air as well as parts of the south bay. moderate air quality for the coast and the bayp, the east bay and santa clara valley. there will be drifts of smoke coming in, but much of that smoke is now moving off to the east towards tahoe as it continues to burn over sierra and the coast is looking better today as well as the north bay. we're going to be watching this. a slight shift in the wind direction could change our air quality. we're going to see that as we head through the week as our temperatures warm up. more on that in a few minutes. >> the caldor fire in el dorado county it is the top priority. the fires jumped highway 50, closing in on lake tahoe. fire officials worry changing winds and bone dry v

meteorologist kari hall certainly always keeping her eyes on that. smoky saturday in my neighborhood but cleared on sunday. what are we in store for today? >> we did have the spare the air alert meaning that we are experiencing unhealthy air quality. it has been downgraded to an air quality advisory, a level below a spare the air alert. as we take a look at our centers right now, the green sensors end gait good air quality, moderate for the yellow dots and still orange, unhealthy in the tri-valley this morning as you get ready to head out. we are expecting some improvement today. still going to be smoky for the start of the day but then the winds kick up and pushes out the smoke, the smoke pushes to the east as we go into this evening. we will continue to see some improvement here, but those strong winds will fan the flames of the caldor fire and push it closer to lake tahoe with the westerly wind. mike is saying everything for the commute is looking pretty good. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that when it comes to air quality conditions and kari, how today, even though it looks like a little hazy start. our typical layer in the early morning hours. while we wake up to quiet weather let me show you what's happening across southern california. a lot of rain moving in and yeah, the sunrise kind of affecting the satellite m imaginary there. you can see the rain that's been moving across arizona, southern california and around vegas causing flash flood watches as we see the remnants of a tropical system moving there. the forecast clears it out for today. a strong westerly wind improves our air quality and the smoke moving to the east but does look like it returns tomorrow, especially for the north bay. our break from the smoke will be short lived as we get all of these fires burning and much more active fire weather conditions around the caldor fire. now here at home, our temperatures will be heating up into the low 80s, so it's going to actually be cooler than we've seen recently. still pretty warm in antioch reaching 91. 72 in haywar

kari hall keeping track of what we can expect. when it comes to 4:36 in the morning. not a bad shot to get started with the day. >> we are seeing clouds overhead and at times we will see more of the smoke coming in, and that's going to be a concern as you are making plans to get outside. we are also going to be seeing temperatures -- still nice and cool now, but it's going to heat up. walnut creek, now at 60 degrees, and we will see it go from the low 60s to the upper 60s at 11:00. a look at the high temperatures this afternoon, reaching up to 85 degrees in concord, and 76 degrees in napa. still looking great for today. we have to be mindful of the air quality if you are spending more time out there in the more comfortable temperatures. it will heat up going into next week, and we'll talk about that coming up in the next few minutes. >>> we have a nice flow of traffic getting up to the contra costa area. highway 4 typically has more of a difficult drive. we talked about highway closures for highway 37 overnight. still going on one direction only, but you might want to

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that friday forecast. something that a lot of people get excited about. >> excited but we're going to have -- >> i know it's coming. >> inouye a lot of people want to get outside but if you're sensitive to the wildfire smoke you need to limts your time outside. a clear view across the golden gate bridge this morning and for the inland areas it's mostly clear. we get the sunshine and a look at our temperatures heating up, so i think the early morning hours will be the best for some spots in the east bay as well as the south county. back in the 90s today but this spike in temperatures is temporary. we will be cooling down for the weekend. we'll get a look ahead in a few minutes. mike, you're looking at a highway closure. >> the same like yesterday until just shy of 6:00 a.m. highway 37. i posted about that in vallejo off of 121, your alternate is 121 to 29 and that will remain in place possibly until 6:00 a.m. my guess about 5:30. fridays tend to see a pick-up earlier. the crash alongside the east shore free

let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. kari? >> yeah. we are seeing the caldor fire burning many acres across the tahoe basin and sierra closer to the tahoe basin as we've seen over the past few days, over the past 13 days, over 139,000 acres have burned. right now it's about 12% contained. this is an outline of the perimeter of that fire and how much has burned over the past several days as it moves a little bit closer. as our weather pattern changes we're going to see more of that smoke coming into the bay area starting today and continuing throughout the weekend as we get hot temperatures and that smoke drifting right in, making it unhealthy to spend long periods of time outside. we're monitoring that and also what's going on in our forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks so much. we'll check back with you. >>> discouraging new developments this morning in the frontlines of the caldor wildfire advancing towards lake tahoe. evacuation warnings for the first time for residents inside the tahoe basin as the fire yesterday grew by another 13

let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. air quality is going to be bad today. >> yeah.obably going to be the worst we've seen so far this year because of the air quality and the shift in the direction of the wind is going to bring in a lot more smoke today. as of now, we haven't had that shift in the wind. still a westerly breeze bringing in some fresh air from the ocean but that will change as our winds pick up later today. we're going to start to see in the north bay very unhealthy air quality that will continue and spread down the peninsula into the south bay as well as the east bay and really settling into a lot of our valleys. it continues tomorrow as we have numerous fires burni o

let's check in with meteorologist kari hall right now. >> yeah.tarting out with clouds and a little bit of smoke in the mix but not too bad. in fact it's been pretty good here in the bay area for the past couple days. heading out for a workout, our temperatures in the south bay starting out in the upper 50s going to clear out at about 8:00. the rest of the day really nice, highs in the low 70s with the hazy sunshine, moderate air quality continues for the inland east bay an north bay with our temperatures on the cool side but about to warm up. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. still one highway closure going on. >> let's not forget about the one we started with that happened overnight and continues no and 101. typical slowing. the big map shows an easy drive. down here not the slowing we're talking about 101 through san martin that is predictable. closure 152 because of that crash overnight about 1:00 in the morning, 100 gallons of cooking oil spilled across the roadway. folks are using ferguson to get by and that's a slower drive ta will a

let's bring in meteorologist kari hall as well. the smoky conditions we've seen all the way here in the bay area. >> yeah. we still are tracking that active rate of spread for the fire. your heart just breaks this morning seeing what's going on. so i've put a map here with the yellow dots showing all of the areas that have burned and then the red dots show where the active fire is still happening and where it's making some forward progress. we know that it's continuing to move very close to south lake tahoe. now starting to enter into the tahoe basin, it's going downhill and spreading closer to the lake tahoe, south lake tahoe area. so we've also been seeing a lot of that smoke moving in, but what's going to happen today is our winds are going to pick up. a westerly wind is going to clear out the smoke, but also push the fire around the caldor fire off towards the east and firefighters are trying to get some containment on this now with some new red flag warnings going up for this region. with the wind coming out of the west/southw

meteorologist kari hall, of course, keeping her eyes across all of that. en it comes to the smoke that we're seeing from the fires. >> yeah. we'retill seeing the caldor fire spreading. as long as we have fires burning, we are going to have smoke. taking a look at what's going on, how far the leading edge of these active fires are from where south lake tahoe is about seven miles at this point. we're going to get another updates in the next 20 minutes. this is a live look at the fire from armstrong lookout from around the highway 88 area looking toward the caldor fire where the billows of smoke are basically being forced high into the atmosphere. it's showing that that fire is spreading quickly and that's what we're concerned about over the next couple days as new red flag warning warnings go up around the dixie fire that is still burning at this point. a shift in the wind direction could push this closer to south lake tahoe area. moderate air quality to begin, going into the afternoon still going to be hazy and smoky at times. that air quality advisory is a

. >>> we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall who has been tracking these dangerous conditions and how is it looking. >> we just had this -- all of this area shaded in red upgraded to a red flag warning that includes parts of the marin county and napa and sonoma counties and the east bay hills. this goes into effect later on tonight and will be a short lived one. about 12 hours of this red flag warning where our hills and our mountains will see the gusts possibly over 55 mile per hour and some of the valleys wind gusts 10 to 25 miles per hour. new fire starts will spread rapidly under these conditions. our wind forecast the winds start to pick up by early tomorrow morning. take a look at the sensor there we're going to see those winds gusting in these areas that are shaded in red and we're going to be watching this tonight once again those areas potentially under that pfps includes our north bay counties that should be getting the alerts soon. more on the weather conditions in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. >>> developing now, the taliban is now in full control of afghanistan.

kari hall is tracking the smoke and haze. how is it so far? >> so far good.have seen smoke and haze higher up in the atmosphere, but there's an air quality advisory due to the spoke and it's below a spare the air day. those that may be sensitive to the smoke may want to limit their time outside, as we have seen the dixie fire, the largest single fire, and we have the monument fire burning in northern california and some of the smoke may be settling in especially to the north bay. for more on the impacts of how the wildfire can impact your health, let's head over to kris sanchez. >> the haze you are talking about, kari, is nothing like the eerie orange skies we saw for weeks and weeks hanging around the bay area last year when the bay area fires were burning. we had a record number of spare the air days, and we were told to protect n-95 masks to protect ourselves from the smoke, and covid infection rates spiked during the wildfires in 2020, and there was a correlation between particulate matter and positivity rates. there's a study that is something to look at

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. >> not bad.area and as we're starting out a live look in emeryville. our air quality today, it's starting to get slightly unhealthy for people who may be sensitive to some of the smoke, especially in santa clara valley, the coast and bay. elsewhere it is looking pretty good, staying below the 50 number that we use to measure how much smoke is in the air. as we look at our near surface smoke model it does show that in san francisco, as well as parts of the east bay, later on this evening, this is tonight, we can see a little bit more of that smoke drifting in and it makes for some colorful sunsets. here's what's going on, new fires going, especially farther to the north, up around redding. the panther fire has really exploded and so some of that smoke is going to move into parts of the north bay, get drawn into the marine layer for the next couple days. we'll monitor air quality and the south bay, our high temperatures reaching up to 81 degrees in cupertino, 89 for a high in morgan hill and as you

meteorologist kari hall has a look at the hump day forecast. >> it's wednesday and temperatures are actually going up. we're not about to go down. like we normally do for a workweek. as we take a look at our temperatures starting out this morning, at least we do have these cool starts to the day and it's 51 degrees. we're going to see our temperatures headed towards the low 70s at 11:00 and then continuing to climb from there. headed up to 87 today. 90 in napa. san francisco is up to 70 degrees. 75 in oakland. lv up to 98 degrees. concord 99. a few isolated spots in the east bay hitting 100 degrees and farther to the north, but this along with a little bit more humidity as we go into the next couple days, so we'll talk about the surge of monsoonal moisture and how it could affect california as we go into the next couple days. mike, you're tracking a crash. >> a deadly crash in san jose, but this requires a reroute for folks who are trying to make freeway transitions. here's south 101 just shy of the 680/280 interchanges heading south down towards story road off mckee. you see traffic is gett

we want to go to meteorologist kari hall right now. kari, you've been tracking that air quality and the communications that we're experiencing. >> we're expecting some clearing today as we get some cooler temperatures and a nice ocean breeze picking up. this is a look from our heavenly camera. and you can see all of the smoke, the orange sky, and definitely some of the fire that's moving closer to the heavenly ski resort. it's really surreal to see this happening right now. we of course continue to watch the very unpredictable conditions that we are seeing around the fires as they generate their own weather. and we have a red flag warning. the wind that's helping to clear out the bay area smoke is also pushing the fire closer to south lake tahoe as it continues off towards the east. but we once again are expecting good air quality for today. but then by tomorrow we start to see some of that smoke returning to the north bay. still does look good for the rest of the bay area up until noon, and then we start to see the hazy conditions retu

we want to get to meteorologist kari hall with a look at our air quality conditions this morning. kari, are we seeing any improvement? >> it is improving for part of the bay area. we've seen the smoke shifting around and yesterday was pretty good in the north bay, but today air quality will be moderate. for the coast and the bay, it will be improving and that means san francisco will have better air quality today as well as the south bay looking pretty good, east bay with the hazy sky and santa clar all of the smoke it' not surprising that the tahoe area has the worst air quality in the world. number two is chile with the air quality index at about 389, that's well below what we're seeing in tahoe. we're going to continue to monitor this as we go through the next few days. it will be changing and unfortunately it does look like a lot more of that smoke comes into the bay area. an update on that in a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> speaking of lake tahoe, wildfires in and around lake tahoe are nothing new, but this week it's different. long-time locals are fearful. >> the caldor fire

. >> first let's check in with kari hall. set the scene for us. what are we in store weather wise for us today? they really look at those conditions. >> the wind was kicking up yesterday and that fanned the flames and caused it to spread farther. the red dots indicate where we are seeing active fires burning. according to my estimates some of the leading edges of the fire is only at about 4 miles away from south lake tahoe and you can see that we are seeing this, it's been very erratic because some of the embers kicking up can kick those new fires off about a mile away from some of the very active flames and fires we've seen over the past 24 hours. red flag warning as you mentioned going up. they actually extended it from today at 11:00 to 11:00 tomorrow evening. it does look like these conditions will persist where we're getting these west/southwest early winds at about 20 to 35 miles per hour but may be isolated gusts up to 50 miles per hour. it's really going to be dangerous here. we're in this critical timeframe where we could see this spreadi

first let's start out with the lady in pink this morning, meteorologist kari hall with a look at that forecast. >> it looks like it's going to be a nice day. it got a little hot yesterday afternoon in some of our some c temperatures today. this week, though, by friday, we will be heating up and i'm watching the fire danger for the sierra once again. let's take a look at these high temperatures. how about 79 in san jose, 79 in santa rosa as well as martinez and 87 in concord. we'll talk about more of what's ahead as our temperatures go up and down. mike, you're looking at a crash in san francisco. >> kari, it's been there over an hour. about 3:00 this morning, we're told it's going to take an hour until they can get the tow truck on scene. green sensors around the bay. the crash is in san francisco north of 280 that's offs the split there. 101 northbound at cesar chavez, a crash involving what i'm told is a dump truck as well as a dump truck with some debris from a construction site. they're both there. they need larger tow trucks and that's the reason for the delay. everything else is

want to check in with meteorologist kari hall tracking the really dangerous conditions out there. >> we have the winds starting to kick up in that area as well as some of the smoke coming in, so as you're heading out the door this morning, looking a little smoky, these dots show our air quality sensors and the yellow shows some moderate air quality and around the area of the fire, of course, very unhealthy air quality right now. we're going to monitor that smoke as our temperatures actually cool off. we will have a stronger westerly wind coming off the ocean helping to cool us off around the bay area. mostly 70s and 80s for a lot of our inland areas. we'll talk more about what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. how is it looking for the early morning commuters. >> pretty calm overall. not really a lot of traffic out there. green sensors for the most part. a crash reported west 80. your commute direction around powell may affect the off ramp, no slowing. crews heading out there and i'll track that. know that northbound 242 is closed for overnight road work as you're heading through c

meteorologist kari hall of course keeping track of all this. so break down what we've been able to find out. >> i feel like a broken record talking about these records, but it seems like every summer we just get hotter and hotter. and it's not your imagination. this june and july were the hottest on record. now, noaa basically took the average temperature across the state and saw that it was 6.8 degrees above normal in june and 5.3 degrees above normal in july. and our last record was 2020 right before all of those fires broke out, and we had the previous record there. now we are setting a new one. but if you're in san francisco and you're thinking it's been so chilly here, well, it doesn't really apply to san francisco because you didn't even get to 70 degrees for the first time in over 50 years. this averages all of the temperatures around the state, and overall it was much warmer than normal. and unfortunately that has led to the drought that we're seeing as well as the record wildfires. we'll be watching this as well as what's ahead. i'm go

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. and air quality is still something we're concerned with those fires burning. >> and that's going to be our main concern over the next few days. we've seen some improvements but it still looks pretty hazy out there. although some of the smoke has been lifting up higher, we are still seeing some air quality for people that are sensitive to the air. looking much better for parts of the north bay and south bay. this is where our temperatures have been reaching into the mid- to upper 70s so pretty nice out there, especially for this time of year to have temperatures in the 70s, this is cooler than normal. and that seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. we do have some warmer weather headed our wa the 80 we're heading toward in pleasanton today and in martinez we're reaching up to about 76 degrees. 70 in san mateo, palo alto reaching 76 degrees. san francisco will reach 64 downtown. marino district up to about 59. and in sonoma today, 77 for a high temperature. ukiah up to 88

they really pick up in the tahoe basin area. >> meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the path of the caldor fire. kari, what does it look like it's doing now as it continues to grow? >> it has just burned so much and we're seeing many more active fires that are continuing to spread in the easterly direction as well. we've also seen the southern edge of that spreading as well. this shows you where we have fires that are already burned in yellow and then the red shows the active fires and where it is still spreading. notice how these little boxes here are fairly spread apart and that's because those embers fly up and away from those big towering clouds from the smoke and fires and spreading the embers up to a mile out ahead of where the active fire is burpg. we get more of the fires burning. as we map it on our little tool, it shows that it's about four miles from the leading edge of the active fire to south lake tahoe. that is not a very far distance when you see the flames just exploding like they are right now. this is leek springs off highway 88 and see how hot those flames are
