a massive wildfire engulfing an entire town in northern california. >> that's right. the images are just coming in from the town of greenville where much of the downtown gone and another fire has forced more to flee their homes. >> weather conditions are only going to get worse with heavy winds in the forecast. these scenes of utter devastation are emerging from a northern california town where a wildfire destroyed everything in its path. witnesses in greenville say flames from the dixie fire have leveled the town. the town's sheriff's office, jail, library, stores, restaurants and a hotel all reportedly burning to the ground. and this video showing home after home on fire, but this dollar store seemingly untouched. local congressman doug lamalfa getting emotional during a facebook video with a large smoke bloom visible in the background. >> we lost greenville tonight, and there's just not words for it. >> reporter: the three-week-old dixie fire is now the eighth largest fire in state history destroying more than 278,000 acres. the forest service is calling this fire

a serious threat of wildfire around northern california tonight. good evening, everyone i'm frank somerville and i'm julie julie haener, the cal door fire exploded in size today, growing from 6500 acres this morning to more than 30,000 acres tonight. firefighters have not made any progress in containment and that led governor gavin newsom to declare a state of emergency today for el dorado county. firefighters say they are prepared for the situation to worsen overnight and a red flag. will take effect in about an hour as you can see from this map parts of the north bay, east bay and sacramento will see critical fire conditions. winds could hit up to 55 miles an hour at the higher elevations and those conditions prompted pg you need to issue power shutoffs. this is the earliest in the year, the utility has announced plan power shutoffs 51,000 customers in 18, northern california counties could be impacted. including alameda, contra costa, napa, sonoma and solano counties. here in the bay area. we have team coverage of the fire danger. ktvu is debora

a pair of massive wildfires are cutting up path of destruction through northern california. burning homes and businesses to the ground. and for the first time we are about to start feeling the effects of all that wildfire smoke in the bay area. >> it is bound to happen. paul heggen is here with a closer look at the timeline. coo but very me hazy ski little of that smoke got to ground level. but this afternoon we see those plumes of smoke, those are the pyrocumulus clouds being produced by that very large fire. let's switch over to the forecast model and track how the winds will change. those are the arrows moving on the map and how the smoke will follow the wind changes. tomorrow, the wind that has been steadily onshore for the depth of the atmosphere, helping out the bay area by keeping our air quality good, they will turn more along the coast. that would take some of the smoke from northern california and send it down to the bay area. we will see decreasing air quality, especially further up in the atmosphere. and this is throughout the depth of the atmosphere. it takes a

we've got active fires now across much of northern california. this one up near weaverville. you see the all the smo e streaming in a northerly direction and then just to the east there, we've got the quincy fire and all that smoke wrapping around a rolling up to the north east in that direction as well. not tomorrow as the low comes through this. the downside we're of got red flag warnings going up across much of the sierra nevada in northern california. expecting some strong gusty winds. maybe some gusts of 35 to 40 miles per hour that is very dangerous. in an active fire situation. even now they're looking at 29 mile an hour winds and chester in 16 in the quincy. so going to watch that very closely tomorrow. the same time that low is going to be coming on shore making its way into northern california. see the clockwise or counterclockwise rotation around that low. that is going to possibly bring some of that smoke drifting back into parts of the bay area, especially in the part of the good news is it is going to stay aloft. that means thousands of feet up in the atmosphere

new developments tonight and the mysterious deaths of a northern california family and their dog in the sierra national forest. investigators are looking into whether toxic algae blooms may have played a role. a husband, wife, their one-year-old daughter and the dog were found on the remote hiking trail on tuesday in mariposa county. there was no sign of trauma, nor was there a suicide note. the area is near a mining so investigators could look into whether toxic gases are to blame but that is mineral will that. we are looking more -- in learning more about the rescue of family stuck in the delta. they rescued a total of four people on thursday. rescuers told us a family of three was on the boat that had mechanical problems. a family friend on a separate boat came up to help them and also got stuck. crews say rescues in the area are not uncommon. >> the delta iselta iselta isela unforgiving, so folks get stuck quite a bit. we launch our boat on average once a month to assist people who are stuck. j.r.: fire crews say the family at no food. no one needed medical treatment. california's d

a red flag warning is now in effect for parts of northern california. hello again, everyone. i'm julie julie haener, and i'm frank somerville. it comes as the cal door fire continues to burn out of control in el dorado county. the cal door fire exploded in size today. this morning, it was 8000 acres tonight. it's at 30,000 acres and is still 0% contained and this serious. there's serious concerned that it will get even larger overnight because of the strong winds hitting the area. the fire continues to move northeast, prompting the sheriff to order new mandatory evacuations for much of pollock pines tonight, including areas north of highway 50. tonight is more of getting additional resources then, uh, we're continuing to get resources throughout the night. we're pushing those resources out to the fire getting them in and around those structures. big thing is obviously no additional structure loss. the fire started saturday night in the area of omo ranch, almost 60 miles from sacramento and has now burned again some 30,000 acres, officials say to people who were seriously hurt

we're watching area of low pressure spinning far northern california. that low is going to be the one that could bring some smoke back into the bay area. see the rotation can interact with the fires today and sweeping the smoke around different directions looking towards susan build. you got the quincy fire. and look what happens when that low begins to encroach on that really begins to sweep some of that smoke in a different direction also has been ramping up the winds and that is a major concern. you have an active with the windy conditions developing around that fire and that makes it extremely dangerous. the winds 29 miles an hour at chester over 20 in quincy and they're blown around. we could use some 35 maybe some 40 mile an hour gust in that currently are looking red flag warnings up until least 10 o'clock for tonight as the low sweeps through those gusty winds continue. and the meantime though, will because the little more smoke rotate around that low. it's kind of sweeps on by the latest models. want to bring a little more smoke back in the bay
