ron, i want to talk about the coronavirus pandemic. a senior biden administration official is telling cnn they believe that there are governors who are putting their political interests ahead of the public health and getting people vaccinated. do you see it that way? >> sure. in fact, the biden administration has been relatively hands-off on this question so far. i mean we're looking at a number of states, republican-controlled states, where two things are happening at once, where the virus is spreading most rapidly and virulently, and the governors are moving most aggressively to dismantle any of the possible public health responses to that. and i think, don, where this is really going to come to a head is on the issue of reopening schools because the education department today issued its roadmap, its guidance, the federal education department, for how communities should reopen schools. and they said, one, every kid should be back in school for in-person instruction but, two, they should follow the cdc guidance and require masks. well

both he and ron desantis have problems with covid, ron desantis has a spike in cases the state.from the beginning. he's not at ignoring the threat of the virus but he saying he will protect the most vulnerable and we aren't going to mandate anyone. if you are a parent you will make the choice about your kid in school. that's your prerogative and you have the prerogative to get the vaccine if you want to. you can't mandate that someone show a vaccine passport. this is the difference between freedom and hypocrisy. so if number spike is effectively saying we will address that under the umbrella of freedom. those numbers for joe biden are really bad because that's his core strength so you've already got inflation and the border, you've already got defunding the police, you've already got critical race theory and you've got all these big tech censorship and all these things that are touching people's lives which they are not happy about. if his perceived strength drops by that many points, that's why we've seen other polling that shows his overall approval rating which drops 10% as w

a lot has to happen for ron desantis. he has to win re-election himself. he's pretty strong.the -- one thing we've seen from the white house is initial ly they were trying to not politicize or make this political or weigh in there. that's over. the reality is that they're trying to use every lever and the president clearly sees it as his political benefit and they're really trying to, as a substantive matter, trying to call out these governors here. i'm not sure it's had any effect or not. >> it certainly hasn't had an effect on ron desantis. >> right. >> he is doubling down on his position. what you're seeing basically is a choice from a purely political standpoint, the choice before voters here, joe biden embracing mandates, putting mandates back in place as we've seen the cases pile up, particularly in unvaccinated americans and ron desantis, who is leaning in on where he was in the pandemic even as caseloads in his state rise. he believes ultimately his voters support the idea of being able to make their own choices. even if that means that they get sick, even if that mea

ron, i have to get your take. this is some breaking news out of texas. the supreme court is refusing to intervene on mask mandates issued by several local jurisdictions. listen basically tonight, because i think we're overcomplicating it here. the courts now have agreed that texas can mandate masks until this litigation goes further. what does this mean right now? >> first of all, the extent of the open defiance and rebellion that we're seeing in texas with now, i think, dozens of school districts is truly extraordinary. every large metro in the state now is openly defying what the governor wants to do. and the governor and the attorney general, ken paxton, tried to get basically to an end run on the courts and asked, say, the supreme court to intervene immediately to block all of these local mask mandates. what the state supreme court said today was, no, you have to go through the regular process. you have to go through the appellate level before we will weigh in. strikingly, don, on the same day, today, that that happened, the texas educational agency
