abigail doolittle come over to you. >> abigail: it did feel like bad news. this is the s&p 500 prior to the august jobs report. we had futures up slightly. only 235,000 jobs were added. it is well below the 700,000 estimated. we can see a big slide. at this point, just down slightly. somehow, this is goldilocks. a taper could be pushed off. that could be good news. most sectors are down. it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. we will know it before 4:00. kaley: one of the sectors in positive territory is information technology. they are in the green. let's turn to washington. senate democrats are discussing tax proposals. this includes attacking stock buybacks and access ceo pay. we spoke with the labor secretary. >> that's a conversation, when i am doing right now. i know this conversation is happening in the halls of congress. that's how we will pay for this bill. kaley: joining us is anne-marie. they are for ways to pay for $3.5 trillion in socially oriented program. joe manchin said he is not on board with that. >> we don't know yet. the

abigail doolittle is here with us. abigail: here are the tech movers. here is that inflation feel.wn in a big way as yields shoot higher. yields above 1.5%. that brings into question valuation. it will probably be digested at some point but that puts pressure on the next level. right now you see big decline for tech with a little bit of an exception for facebook. this as instagram is pausing the kids site amid controversy. facebook seems to be rewarded for that. as for the reflationary piece, it has over the to do with energy. we will see big gains here. j.p. morgan chase along with bank of america both up more than 2% as yields are boosting those banks on the idea lending will be better. and then of course energy, oil now back above $75 a barrel, up for a fifth week in a row, demand is seeing a little bit of a supply crunch. occidental petroleum flying up. that sector is the top sector on the year, up 35%. it is not up as much is oil. the top one of the year could be a catch up trade. guy: we will see what happens next year. markets looking through what could be a difficult winter

abigail: extraordinary. huge declines in the asian sessions. there was one index down 23%, a record. we are seeing big declines today, and to your point on that resort, down 18% over two days, the worst two days since march of 2020. that is the degree of the selling power. you have lenders fearful that -- fearful with officials in macau saying government supervision may be needed day-to-day. coming back 50% from the february peak on the concern that the government is stepping in. it is a big risk. the shares don't fully seem to be seeing those declines on the day for tech. luxury goods, some analysts are saying this tumble we are seeing in luxury goods, the louis vuitton owner down, big clients down for a second day, that macau is not critical in terms of sales but as a barometer of sentiment. chinese retail sales came in much weaker than expected. luxury goods tumbling along with casino operators. guy: a whole bunch of european retailers under pressure on the back of that data we saw out of china. abigail, thank you very much indeed. we are st

abigail doolittle is breaking down the action. abigail: major averages down half a percent.he biggest drags on the major averages, the biggest drags is apple and microsoft. big tech. both down 1%. apple is down more than 5% over last week. a stealth pullback for apple, one of the biggest weights on major averages. this has to do with rising yields pressuring valuations causing folks to question whether that trend can continue. the other story we have, the casino stocks, the continued decline this week after macau officials said the government could supervise day-to-day operations in macau. melco resorts and entertainment down. other decliners, the biggest percentage decliner for the s&p 500 is all about free point mac ran. the bloomberg commodity index down more than 1%. at one point its worst day in more than two months. oil down a little bit. questions around the demand picture. marathon oil down 3%. let's end on a bright spot. it is not all bad. we have some bulls trying to bolster the market. american express up .8%, upgraded over bank of america. not an overwhelming sha

abigail doolittle looking at what we need to know. >> that support is in question indeed. i would argue technicals. these are the declines. solid on the day. the russell 2000 is below its 200 day moving average. that happened a few weeks ago but they said the first time you test the moving average, you buy it, the second time, you sell it, so the russell 2000 may give us more information on the s&p 500 if we look at the chart. it is not just a debt below the moving average. it is -- it is not just a dip below the moving average. it is a cross. alex pointed out that the next up is the hundred day moving average. will that hold? i would argue that the russell suggests that we will probably see more weakness ahead for large caps as well, especially as apple leads the way. guy: thank you very much indeed, abigail doolittle, taking a look at what is happening on the technical side of things. interesting that we are seeing this move in apple as well. all this happening on a week with fed decisions, a meeting tomorrow. mike mckee joining us now. mike, draw a line between where th

joining us is abigail doolittle. thanks for being here.i numbers come out i thought stocks will go up. i'm not sure it worked out that way. abigail: it did not at all. we have the second day of a bearish reversal. stocks did open solidly higher. now we are looking at the s&p 500 down a little bit, the dow is down half a percent. the nasdaq is fluctuating. the biggest move is in bonds. while there was a month over month biz on an absolute basis the year-over-year print is very high. that is a multi-decade high. it is a small win for the transitory team.

abigail doolittle is here with more.bigail: everything in life is perception, so even though there might be a situation worsening in china live to evergrande, with the idea that the chinese government is saying don't step in, you've got stocks higher. the msci china index climbed higher by 0.9% just on that idea of china telling evergrande, do not default. that is helping out the stoxx 600. europe has quite a bit of exposure to china. the s&p 500 much higher than it had been relative to the futures earlier, now looking at a massive today rally, up more than 2% for the s&p 500. that probably has to do more with the fed. finally, we rounded it out with the china tech index in the u.s. that is down, so that shows some of those nerves, down 0.5%. there's been lots of talk about contagion. is it going to hurt the bond markets here? this was the bear market here in the u.s. of the pandemic crisis. you can see that is sky high as risk fear was really in. now we see spreads really quite tight, suggesting there's not a lot of con

abigail doolittle is watching the market technicals.nnmarie hordern is on the hill about the debt limit. bloomberg's helen robertson is keeping her eye on the fuel shortage in the u.k. we want to begin with the market technicals. it has been a very difficult couple of days. is that cap bouncing, or no? abigail: hard to say, but lots of choppy action. we can see that with the russell 2000. you can see that earlier this week, there had been a big update with the reopening trade hot as yields were rising. that hit tech a little bit on monday. yesterday, that reflation trade selling off or to small caps. net-net, down 0.5%. we don't really have a bounce here yet on the week, at least for small-cap. relative to big caps, going to the bloomberg terminal and take a look at what is happening for the s&p 500. a very important technical test, when that happened about a year ago, when you had the s&p 500 go below its 50 day moving average, hit the 100 day moving average, and then retest. that proved to be a successful test into this year's rally.

abigail doolittle is looking for markets today.bigail: it is really interesting this quarter, this month, today. we are looking at solid gains, even with yields rising on the quarter. it is a mixed picture because of september. where we do have gains on the quarter, the s&p 500 and the nasdaq, both of these indexes up for a sixth quarter in a row. not so bad. interestingly, the dow down 0.4% , its first down quarter since the pandemic marched down -- pandemic march down quarter. the russell 2000 down 3.5%. that is often considered to be a leading index. when you see small caps rolling over like that, that could be a worrisome signal for the market. particularly when you put it into the context of risk. we have this golden cross that we talked about a few weeks ago. telling you that there is more likely to be upside momentum. we do have that over the last week, a spike higher for yields. what is making that so interesting is that on the month, it is weighing on stocks, but on the quarter, we have the s&p 500 and the nasdaq come thos
