. >> that certainly gives us a lot to discuss with elie honig and areva martin.o start with you. we almost never hear from justice clarence thomas. does it surprise you to hear one of the most conservative political justices on the court saying, politics is the biggest threat? >> it does surprise me to hear justice thomas say anything, but especially hear him say that. i mean, this is a growing thing. just in the last few weeks, we've heard similar sentiments from justice amy coney barrett and even stephen breyer. we can all see what's going on here. it goes back to really 2000, bush v. gore, when the five conservatives took this side and the four liberals took that side. that's not happenstance. that's not coincidence. we saw it against just a couple weeks ago with the texas abortion case. the five justices who said -- they said, well, we can't touch it now because of procedural issues, just so happened to be five conservative justices, most of whom are on record as being in favor of striking down roe v. wade. we can't ignore that. >> areva, he talked about his

joining me now to discuss is areva martin.e author of the upcoming book "awakening: ladies, leadership, and the lies we have been told." congratulations on the book. good luck with that. the acting u.s. attorney saying today that this verdict, quote, forever brands r. kelly as a predator. his defense attorney says that he was surprised. i mean what do you think of today's decision, areva? >> not surprised at all. i can remember sitting on this network, having this conversation about a year ago with you, don, where i said we wanted justice. and today we got justice. obviously this won't change the hurt, the trauma, the pain that so many of the women endured that got caught up in r. kelly's circle. but it sent a strong message that the kind of conduct that he was engaged in is not acceptable and that, you know, he will be held accountable and anyone involved in that kind of conduct will be held accountable. >> these kind of accusations have followed r. kelly for a very long time, areva. in 2019, the scathing docu-series survivin

and i think from a profiler's standpoint, that's the way i would look at it. >> areva, you said it's a matter of time before the fbi locates brian laundrie. but where is the line between the moral and the legal here when it comes to laundrie's parents? what is the difference between what they should have done or people think common sense would lend them to do and whether there's any crime that was committed? >> look, kate, i'm a parent of three and so i can imagine as any parent you want to protect your child. but if a crime has been committed, you have an only ga obligation to participate and cooperate with law enforcement. if a crime has been committed and you are knowingly concealing that crime, you are committing in a crime yourself, engaging in obstruction of justice. so just because your child may be involved in criminal activity, you don't have the right or pleasure to not participate with law enforcement. and imagine your child goes on a trip with their boyfriend or girlfriend and goes missing. that person returns home without plo providing any information about what happened

areva, let's start with you.ttorney told us that brian purchased a cell phone on august 14. brian left that phone at his parent's house and now the fbi has it. we don't snowknow if that new p was the only one that he bought at the store. does any of this make since to you? >> none of it makes sense, don. what we do know is that this family went on what appeared to be a camping trip during the time that gabby was missing, and at some point, when the police -- after gabby's parents make the report that she was missing, rather than being able to talk to brian and to get answers, police get met with, well, something had to transpire during those days that he was with the family. something that caused the family enough concern that they hired an attorney. it's really puzzling that a family that presumably knew that brian was dating, perhaps even engaged to gabby, that there wouldn't have been more concern and more efforts to find out where she was, to help find her. so the conduct is very, very suspicious. both not on
