let's go to knoxville where we find nbc's liz mclaughlin. liz, talk to me about the situation there when you think about some of these astounding numbers, how hospitals really they're buckling under the pressure of these high covid numbers. >> reporter: absolutely. it's nothing short of a dire situation. and here in eastern tennessee they're being hit especially hard. we're looking at icu beds as one of the biggest challenges here in this region of eastern tennessee. they have these community calls three times a week where they kind of talk about the capacity. and sometimes there are zero icu beds for adults available, zero. other times statewide there's between 2 and 6% available. so really dwindling, and resources are very much stretched thin. this surge is even higher. some numbers even higher than the winter surge we saw before the vaccine was widely available to the population. we're seeing more patients not only in volume, but they're sicker. so more patients on ventilators, more patients that need icu beds, and of course that's putting

joining us in knoxville, tennessee w the latest is liz mclaughlin. >> reporter: it just goes to show reporting really grim numbers. here in tennessee the recent steep surge is putting a strain on hospitals. we're in knoxville in the eastern part of tennessee where it's been hitting especially hard. we're at the university of tennessee medical center, the only academic medical center in this region, and we're going to speak to a doctor here with an update in a few moments but a couple of days ago as you mentioned only six icu beds left in the entire east part of the region. those icu numbers change constantly, but it's a low number and it's putting some stress on this system. now part of when icu beds free up, some of that is because someone might die from covid-19 and we're seeing a majority of those deaths a steep increase in mortality are with unvaccinated patients and the vast majority, talking like 97%, sometimes more, that's a trend we're seeing nationwide so there is a parallel here and this surge is some higher averages than we've seen since the winter surge, with a largely un
