secretary of labor marty walsh who joins us exclusively this morning.heard there, deirdre's report talked about how many municipal jobs are going unfilled. how can that be turned around? >> well, thank you for having me today, and certainly after yesterday's report we've been looking at, you know, a lot of the results, i think that some of the folks that are coming in, you mentioned municipal employees and potential workers not coming in because they want to telework, i think we still have to focus on the delta variant and the coronavirus, and we have to do everything we can to get people vaccinated and get we saw a spike in the month of august in the coronavirus, which obviously was part and party to hurting our numbers being high, so we have some work to do there. there's no question about it. and i also think that schools starting this week and next week is going to help us as well. lots of people having lots of problem with child care, particularly single mothers and individual family members having a difficult time trying to have a place for their

joining us now the labor secretary marty walsh, the former mayor of boston.hank you very much for coming into "the situation room." >> it's exciting to be in here. >> jobs numbers very disappointing. why do you think it happened? because everybody was expecting 700,000, 750,000. >> i think a lot of economists were saying the number was going to be high. we overperformed. i think when you look at the numbers today you can't look at the recovery in one month. you have to look at it over a period of time. the president just said about the delta variant in the last three months the largest area of job gain we had in the united states was in hospitality, leisure, and restaurants. and this month we had zero gain there. so, you can see a direct correlation between the delta variant and what's going on. >> the delta variant's not going away so quickly the numbers keep getting worse, hospitalizations, deaths here in the united states. what are you bracing here? >> i think we have to continue on continue to get people vaccinated. if you look at the areas where the delt

secretary marty walsh. this is a complicated number.forecasts were wrong last month. they forecast 600,000 jobs. we have over 1 million now with the adjustment. >> forget the forecast. it's a bad number. >> when you look at the number, i look at the positive side of the number. 235,000 jobs. most in the private sector. unemployment rate fell to 5.2%. the last three months, 750,000 job. we have work to do. when i look at the numbers, i look at the number of hospitality. the numbers were the highest in the last three months. this month, we had almost zero gain there. you correlate that with the delta variant and you see correlation there. >> why is that? is that the delta variant is spreading so employers in leisure and hospitality are no longer hiring people and their numbers are down or no one is applying for the jobs? >> i think a little bit of everything. i think people are not going out to eat as much. i think we have to keep in perspective here is since february of 2020, we have been dealing with and living with a global pandemic. t

labor secretary marty walsh joins me now.etary -- good to see you this morninghi, jackie, how are you? jackie: a lot of folks on wall street are wondering why this number came in so low. >> i mean, there's probably lots of reasons for it. i think number one, you just mentioned the hospitality number. for the last three months, those numbers have been leading the way in significant ways. this month we really had no growth at all. i think we can tie some of it to the delta variant in some places as far as people not going out to eat as much and not working in those industries as much. but certainly, there's positive signs here. we are adding jobs. we have more work to do. the forecast was off in a big way, but also the forecast was off in a big way last month as well the other way. but, you know, over the last three months we're averaging still 750,000 jobs, and since president biden has taken office, 4.5 million jobs have been added to the economy. our unemployment did drop to 5.3 % in this -- 5.2% in this report as well. jack

i was just talking with labor secretary marty walsh. this is a covid story. my worry is ida. just blew through and cost anymore miss -- and caused an enormous amount of damage.

to push these bills in his agenda through, he is speaking at 11:20 am on labor unions alongside marty walshlongtime labor member. and there is a question of how they are going to try to push worker power at a time of a record high number of job openings. this friction in the labor market, what are they doing on that front? >> i think the comments obviously are timely because of labor day recently. but, for one, the administration, when you talk about the number of job openings, the administration did not push particularly hard on the issue of extra pay. the administration was actually the first among democrats to say we are really just going to allow extra unemployment insurance money to expire in september. we don't know if there is going to be much of an announcement today on labor unions and that kind of thing. obviously, the broader context of what the biden administration wants to accomplish, a pretty significant focus on increasing wages, potentially even at the expense of lowering the unemployment account. not exactly sure how significant the announcement will be today, but obviously

labor secretary marty walsh joins us now on this labor day. mr. secretary, good morning, thank you for being with us. >> thank you, happy labor day to you and everyone in america. >> let me start with those benefits expiring for people who are relying on them for rent, for paying bills. what needs to be done to help them? >> well, we need to continue to help people get connected to jobs. since president biden has taken office, we've added 4.5 million jobs to our economy. we're working through the department of labor, through our american job centers, to connect people at jobs. and in those states that are still having a difficult time with the variant, if we see numbers go up where schools aren't going to reopen or if they're concerned about unemployment running out, myself and secretary yellen sent a letter to the states letting them know that they have the ability to use the american rescue plan money to extend the benefits if they'd like in each state. and as you know, states are different, the unemployment numbers are different state to state.

labor secretary marty walsh spoke on "new day" about what's next. >> i think there's a lot of factors as much of an impact ago everyone said it did. we'll see as we move forward. those states that ended enhanced benefits did not see any gains at all of people going back to work. alisyn kosik joins me again. a very big day. this is impacting 11 million americans, 8 million will loose all their benefits, but the reality is this wasn't intended to last forever. it did what it was intended to do. it was intended to prop up h households and economy. and we're going through this great uncertainly about their economic futures. today has come, nowents the benefits defact that millions of americans struggle. will we see a flood of americans rush back into the labor force and start working for work? the answer is not cut and cry. it was pretty political and controversial. critics were saying we don't think people are going back to work because of the free money, but data showed different. they showed that states that kept their benefits and states that cut their benefits didn't really have any

you spoke to the labor secretary marty walsh today. what did he tell you >> shep, he said it's going to take a couple of weeks to right all of the rules i sat down with him on cnbc's capital exchange event and asked him to respond to the mounting opposition to the mandate. what would you say to some republicans or business groups that say this is it a government overreach? this is going too far? >> it's not about republicans, it's not about businesses, it's about everybody. i think businesses will welcome this businesses want to open. this is about keeping our economy afloat >> reporter: a recent poll shows a majority of voters agree with him. 62% agree. 36% are against it and 6% have no opinion economists predict many workers will comply. goldman sachs estimates 12 million more people will get vaccinated by next spring because of these new rules even if some people end up leaving their jobs in fact, i asked secretary walsh directly if companies would have to fire workers who won't get vaccinated and won't submit to testing. he was non

this is going to be a rule that we will hear from the labor secretary marty walsh when they have finalizedadministration official who briefed us earlier they are still crafting this rule. it does raise questions of, of course, what happens to those businesses if they don't comply with this new rule? should we expect this to go the way the federal government is now, because this new vaccine mandate that the president is announcing today, previously the standard was you had to be vaccinated or submit to regular testing. that is going to be the new standard for private companies that have 100 or more employees. thecomply, the ssions cououou department of labor and osha will, quote, taken forcenforcem actions that could include up to $14,000 per violation. this is something we expect the president to go into further detail on. we should note those remarks are going to include several different components of their plan to get the delta variant and the pandemic under control. the other one, of course, is that vaccine mandate for federal workers. one other aspect of this is they say they are goin

labor secretary marty walsh talked about the expiration.ere is part of that exchange [video clip] >> let's start with the federal unemployment assistance expiring today. that money has been a lifeline for millions of families the last year and a half. what happens to them now? >> thank god we had it at the beginning of this pandemic because people would have gone through more devastation during this pandemic. what we have done as we are looking at -- this bill was voted on by congress, the american rescue plan, and today was the day the $300 extension will end. we have allowed governors to look at using cares money -- actually, rescue plan money to extend the benefits if they need to. the right is different across the country. it is about how do we get the economy back and running? the problem is we have the delta variant that is not working with us. we are seeing numbers higher so we have to keep an i on what is going on moving forward. host: the labor secretary from monday talking about the unemployment benefits. what do you think of this
