a republican-controlled senate, they voted unanimously not to throw the country in the proverbial pirahna pit. yes, the republicans are in charge, but let's not raise our bills and put our world into more debt for no reason. it doesn't matter if republicans are in charge. we should vote unanimously that does not happen. that was four years ago, september 2017. now it is september 2021 and it's the mirror image in terms of partisan control. now we have democratic president joe biden who is in his first year as president. in the 2020 elections last year, democrats secured narrow majorities in both the house and the senate. and just like september 2017, once again, it is time to do that thing that we have been doing since world war i. once again it is time to take that dumb vote to, a, keep the government funded so avoid a government shutdown, and also raise the debt ceiling in order to placate the ghosts of the austria hungarian playground. if we don't do it, real problems, high prices, self-inflicted wound. it is time to do that again. and this time it's democrats in control. republicans s

as for other republicans including senator cassidy who might join senator kennedy who's also from louisiana far from the ten republicans necessary in order for this to pass. and the other republicans aren't feeling that much pressure. they're extremely united at this point with senate minority leader mitch mcconnell in saying that this is up to the democrats to do. so is the government going to shut down? well, it's really unclear, but i will say there's not one democrat who wants this government to shut down because president biden ran on promising a government that functions. this would be the exact opposite of it. but they are careening extremely close to this deadline. i don't see how they get out of it unless they hunt until perhaps closer to the actual deadline of the debt, when they need to pass the debt ceiling until it's supposed to be mid- to late october. what they could do is pass a clean short-term government funding bill for just two to three weeks to give them a little bit more time, but that doesn't solve the problem. that just prolongs it, jonathan. >> certainly kicking the

the debt ceiling, republicans and the senate have vowed to vote no. you generally need 60 people. publicans, very hard to pass things ike this. democrats put the government funding and the debt ceiling together and they passed to that out of the house. that now works its way toward the u.s. senate, where republicans plan to block both of them at o time, likely on friday, so these two fiscal crises, fiscal nightmares are tied together, and we have to watch very closely for what the offramp is. democrats may have to separate the bill. government shut down, less likely. the debt ceiling, i have to be honest, this is as close as i have seen them toyed with this dangerous lever. we have to watch this day by day. judy: you have this other big stakes tangle among democrats, this is over the trillion dollar infrastructure bill and the much bigger health care, child care, and climate bill. lisa: let's go through and try to unpack all of this to make it simple and understandable. this is the democratic divide. this coming monday, the house is planning or has the deadline to vote on that infr
