cnn's cyril vanier has more from paris. >> reporter: france's catholic church has never known anythingort on abuse within the church unprecedented in scope and scale. the headline, up to 3,200 pedophiles have worked in the french catholic church since 1950, and victims number in the thousands. that's according to the president of the independent commission on sexual abuse. now, the report, the result of the commission's 32 months of investigation, is described as extremely thorough, and it's set to publish tuesday and will contain a lot more damning details, numerous stories of abuse committed on children, and an investigation into how this was allowed to happen. one victim who testified before this commission was abused when he was 11 and says that the church is still in denial. separately, the head of a victims group warned that the report would hit like a tsunami and show the collective responsibility of the church. now, it is worth noting that this was initiated by the catholic church here, which has taken steps in recent years to prevent abuse. the conference of french bishops man

cyril vanier has been studying this report. he joins us live from paris. what are we learning?een 2 1/2 years of investigation by this independent commission. to answer one simple question. how many minors have been abused? what is the size of this problem within the french catholic church? and we can now put a number on it. 216,000, that's the estimated number of minors that have been abused since 1950. that number surges to 330,000 if you include the wider catholic social environment if you include catholic schools and charity. with that number now public, irrefutable with forensics, there is going to be a before and after for the catholic church. the head of conference and bishops said as much the abuse was more than we could have ever imagined. he expressed his shame and asked for forgiveness. victims of sexual abuse were seething today. one who spoke, who has been instrumental in shedding light on cases of sexual abuse, said that the representatives of the church were a disgrace to humanity and said, looking them in the eye, you must all pay. now, we just spoke to someone
