cnn's derek van dam has more. derek. >> that's right, isa.urricane sam still a major category 4 hurricane as it churns over the central atlantic. we still have victor to talk about as well. more on that in just one moment. here's the latest from the national hurricane center. 150 mile per hour sustained winds with this storm. again, that makes it a category 4 hurricane, but it's really just what we like to refer to as fish food at the moment because it's really not impacting directly any land mass. but as you noted, we have the potential for some dangerous surf along the eastern seaboard of the u.s.. and we do believe that the storm is large enough to where it could bring some of its outer rain bands, strong gusty winds, tropical storm force, that type of nature, into the areas of bermuda, the nation of bermuda, i should say. category 4 hurricane through the next 24 hours or so before it starts to race off to the north and start to become less organized and weaken as it does so. here is an update on tropical storm victor. just off the cape ve

derek, any let up in the heavy rainfall? >> well, the good news is that the southwest monsoon is starting to retreat across these areas. so we should start to see some light at the end of the tunnel. but you talked about bridges and roads being washed away. well, here's a prime example of that. this occurred in northern india near the border of nepal earlier this week from the heavy rain that fell. i want you to take note of the mountainous terrain across this region telling the story. what is taking place is a phenomenon called oragraphic lift. think of the mountain side or himalayas as this immovemberable panel or, let's say, a wall, for instance. if you were to take a sponge, a wet sponge, push it against the wall or mountain in this case, it is going to wring out available water. that's what happens when air gets pushed up and over this immovable surface. it wrings out immovable water and allows clouds and rain to condense. when it falls in areas like this, we get ravines and canyons, it funnels down and creates that imm

let's turn to cnn meteorologist derek van dam. derek, good morning to you. >> isa, we have a wild weekend of weather unfolding across the western u.s. anywhere from seattle to san francisco, heavy rainfall with heavy mountain snows in the forecast. just look at this radar imagery, taking you into the future. you can see it lighting up like a christmas tree. of course, shades of white indicating the snowfall. with the coloring of oranges and yellows, that's the heavy rain that's moving on shore. we're going to be measuring snow in feet for the higher elevations, and several inches of rain for the coastal areas. the other story that's going to unfold this weekend will be the strong winds. really culminating into sunday and monday along the coast line of washington, oregon, as well as central and northern california. we have the potential for winds in excess of 50 to 60 miles per hour. that will most certainly take down some tree limbs if not some smaller trees as well. this is all part of several atmospheric river events taking aim

so let's bring in meteorologist derek van dam.he summer it seems like every week you and i were talking on this show about a new weather extreme, from the floods to the fires to the droughts. why is it so important now that we look back at these disasters? >> kim, frankly many people are still reeling from many of this past summer's disasters that occurred. and with the world leaders meeting in glasgow next month for cop-26 we don't want these to be overshadowed or overlooked or forgotten. it was basically or virtually impossible to ignore climate change this past summer across north america. we ranked them, some of the worst disasters, climate-related disasters this summer. i don't have time to get to every single one of them. but some of the more notable ones of course hurricane ida that wreaked havoc from the south coast all the way to the east coast. remember, this checked all the boxes of how climate change is making hurricanes more dangerous. it rapidly intensified. it moved slowly as it moved onto land and it created extrem

let's bring in meteorologist derek van dam.oming more and more urgent here. >> yeah, kim, what you'll notice too, throughout this broadcast is it's not only the west coast that's impacted by rough weather today, it's the central u.s. and then along the east coast later this week. we've got our bomb cyclone ongoing over the western parts of the country. it's meeting the specific criteria of strengthening to be called a bomb cyclone. it's picking up the atmospheric river of moisture from the pacific ocean and translating that into significant amounts of precipitation. over the western parts of the u.s., we will be measuring snowfall neat across the sierra nevada mountain range, leading to significant travel delays, and of course, the debris flows possibility within northern and central california is very real. we have too much rain atop very scorched earth from the recent wildfires that have taken place across the state. and that will translate to the potential, at least, for debris flows. in fact, santa barbara county, in and ar

cnn meteorologist derek van dam has more for you. derek?> what you were looking at there was one of the many fires taking place in the western u.s. now we have over 40 large active fires burning out of control across the western parts of the country. in fact, we're going to focus in on southern california today and through the early parts of the weekend for a potential santa ana wind event to take place. that's why we have an elevated fire risk across this area, including ventura and los angeles counties. winds gusting around 25 to 30 miles per hour in some instances, very low relative humidity, so the vegetation extremely dry, especially with our ongoing drought continuing across the area. looking closely at the forecast, wind gusts across southern california, there is los angeles, there's santa barbara. you can see in some of those higher elevation ranges, we could easily see winds in excess of 25, 30 miles per hour. again, this is going to potentially cause some problems, especially if we get that ignition. erratic fire can take place. h
