>> sara sidner, thank you for that update. joining me to discuss the medicine behind this, dr. peter hotez, director for the center for vaccine development, dean of tropical medicine at baylor college of medicine. good to have you. sepsis can be very serious, it can be life threatening. a blood infection in esecffect. how serious for someone this age? >> it is a medical emergency, especially in an individual over the age of 65, the president is around 75 years of age. and left untreated it has a very high mortality rate. it sounds like they picked it up very early. it sounds like they identified potentially a pathogen that is in bacteria that is in the blood. or in the urine. and then can appropriately tailor both the antibiotics and his fluid resuscitation to ensure that he makes a good recovery. so the fact that he's walking around and jobing with staff, all good signs. high probability he's going to do really well. but just goes to show you how fragile things can get as you get older. and you have to be alert to telltale signs of extreme fatigue or fever or shivering or cold

cnn's sara sidner is outside the university of california irvine medical center located near l.a.resident still undergoing treatment. what are doctors saying about his condition. >> he's better. he's in quite a good mood, according to his spokesman. he's reading a couple of books while in the hospital and joking and he's been able to walk around as well. so they are saying, look, he is doing better, although we're not sure just how good because he's still here in the hospital in the icu, although we should be clear the icu is simply because it's a more private space and more secure than the rest of the hospital. we know he came in on tuesday night. he came in because he was feeling fatigued. doctors determined he had a urinary tract infection. it spread to his blood stream which is sepsis which can be fatal if not treated. they are trying to make sure that he is going to be okay but so far we're hearing from his spokespeople that he is doing well and that he certainly feels better. and just a bit annoyed he has to be in the hospital because he could be out here in the sunny califo

sara sidner is out front in orange, california. n would be released today but i understand he is spend another night in the hospital. so what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. he got here tuesday with fatigue and other symptoms. and doctors determined it was so serious that he needed to be admitted to the hospital. and given intravenous antibiotics, as well as fluids. but it turns out, he was supposed to leave today but doctors are really concerned and wanted to make sure that he is able to get intravenous medicines. and i will let you know we have gotten a statement from the clinton's spokesperson and he told us this. look. that all health indicators at the moment are trending in the right direction, including his white blood cell count which has decreased significantly. and in order to receive, though, further iv antibiotics, he will remain in the hospital overnight. meaning, that he will have been here four nights. you know, he had this urinary tract infection according to doctors. that led to an infection of the bloods
