steve kornacki is here to break it all down. where do things stand?that in the last couple of days or the last week. an average of those polls basically puts mcauliffe ahead by a point in a state that joe biden carried by ten points a year ago, a state trending democratic over the last generation or so. with a democrat in the white house, democrats controlling congress, that tends to be a good environment for the opposition party in governor's races in virginia. let's look at where things landed in virginia last year. biden won the state by 10 points. joe biden now going in to virginia to try to boost terry mcauliffe, maybe help try to save terry mcauliffe. joe biden will be in arlington, virginia. one of the biggest reasons for biden's ten-point margin is this blue area you see right here. this is right outside of washington, d.c. these are big, densely populated suburbs. the metro area of d.c. they've been trending heavily towards democrats. arlington county, where joe biden will be, look at that. joe biden got more than 80% of the vote here against

it's a good time to bring in steve kornacki who is back at the big board for us. w close this race is going to be? >> yeah, garret, i mean there have been some close polls lately, and if you average them all together, terry mccauliffe still leads but it's a narrow lead. this is the one democrats like, virginia over the last generation virginia in the 21st century has been getting more and more plu. you can see presidential elections here culminating joe biden last year with a double digit victory in the state over donald trump. it's obviously why mccauliffe's campaign spends so much energy trying to connect duncan to donald trump. the other trend, though, in virginia is this. it's a modern curse of politics in virginia. the party that controls the presidency that's what you're seeing here going all the way back to 1977, the party that's controlled the white house almost always has lost the virginia governor's race. you could see it right here going back to 1977, jimmy carter, a democrat was the president. republicans won the governorship. that trend is sort of the

steve kornacki at the big board on the numbers nationwide. steve stand by for a moment.art with you. kathy hochul says the mandate has significantly boosted the number of shots in arms. what are you seeing where you are? >> reporter: well, look, craig, this situation is not simple. bear with me for a moment. i spoke with the ceo of this health system here, the mohawk valley health system. she said on the one hand she's supportive of the mandate. they went within a matter of weeks from about 7 0 % of staff vaccinated to 90% vaccinated. at the same time, it's causing major disruptions in the system. and the reason why is because they were already struggling with major staffing shortages here due to burnout, retirements. people finding higher paying jobs elsewhere. here's what she said about the situation right now. >> going into the vaccine mandate now, we had a vacancy rate overall of between 12% and 13% during the last year. so the loss of any additional employees is felt very acutely. we've had to cut back some hours. we've consolidated some services together. we've cut

one is something that steve kornacki has pointed out many times.he last 11 gubernatorial elections, the people that virginia elects is opposite the party the one before. one exception, ali, is terry mcauliffe. he won an election in 2012. he won election for governor in virginia in 2013. so we're looking at it and saying, you know what, history is not on the side of the democratic candidate. and i'm going to be talking about this in my by-line so i'm giving you a little preview, ali. what put terry mcauliffe over the top by three points in 2013 was turnout, particularly among african-american voters. he lost white women by 16 percentage points, but won 91% of the black women vote in 2013. and so -- also we're fascinated by virginia because, one, it's just next door to washington, d.c., but also considering in 2020, joe biden won that state by ten points. so you would expect that terry mccallive, the democratic candidate, would be ahead of glenn youngkin, the republican candidate, and yet if you look at the 538 averages of polls, it had youngkin up b
