joining us now is nbc's morgan chesky from houston. does anyone have a good answer to that, morgan?are trying to get to the bottom of. you mentioned eza blunt, the 9-year-old in a medically induced coma. his parents don't know how things will shake out and gives them a sinking feeling when they see the videos of what took place friday and the consequences of that and believe someone should be held accountable. they are one of many families filing lawsuits. nbc news aware of 17 that have been filed so far. we did have a chance to speak to that family's attorney just a few minutes ago who had a chance to see the aftermath of that concert scene. he said it was very erie to see so many shoes of people who ran out as fast as they could when they were caught up in that crowd. phones left behind, as well. people were just trying to survive. authorities have made it clear this is a criminal investigation. we do know that the fbi is assisting and that the narcotics and homicide units are also taking part here, andrea. but you heard the fire chief say that someone should have stepped in soone

joining me now from houston is nbc news's morgan chesky. morgan, good morning.ls saying? >> reporter: they're calling this a very active investigation, jose. that conversation that took place between houston's police chief and travis scott apparently happened just minutes before scott took the stage for friday's astroworld festival. the police chief described it as brief, but respectful. and it was during that short conversation that we're told that he expressed concerns regarding the attitude of the crowd, the temperament of the crowd, prior to that fate crowd surge that left eight people dead. and important to note here that there were warning signs, jose, hours before these eight lives were lost. video has shown that in some cases, people were able to jump pass barriers, bypass security guards and screenings altogether and gain access to those concert grounds. that's one of the many things that investigators are looking at here, as they try to find out what may have led to this fatal crowd surge. in addition to that, we know that they're certainly going to be

nbc news correspondent morgan chesky has the latest from houston. >> reporter: from packed concert todemonium, the fba now joining a massive investigation into how travis scott's astroworld concert turned deadly. the youngest, just 14 years old. all caught in a sea of nearly 50,000 fans pushing toward scott. >> you couldn't breathe. i'm talking about everybody was so crushed up on you. >> reporter: the crowd surge so crushing witnesses say it knocked fans unconscious before being trampled. >> everyone was pushed to the front. you had no room to walk. >> reporter: some so desperate they climbed onto the stage shouting for help. >> we need some help. somebody passed out right here. >> reporter: despite several pauses, authorities worked to shut the show down for 45 minutes before it ended, scott and others criticized for not stopping sooner. crews rushed 25 people to hospitals. at the scene, hundreds overwhelmed medical staff. some fans even appearing to dance on top of rescue vehicles. houston police chief said he met with scott and others before taking the stage to share concerns abou

i want to go right to nbc's morgan chesky, who's standing by for us, to cover it. morgan, great to see you once again. what can we expect to hear today? >> reporter: well, certainly, what may have happened in the moments, yasmin, before that fatal crush of people took place around 9:15 yesterday evening at this highly-anticipated two-day astroworld concert fronted by popular musician travis scott. we've seen the videos at this point, absolutely heartbreaking, and over the last 24 or almost 24 hours now, investigators have tried to piece together, through video and eye-witnesses, what may have caused that surge towards the front of the stage where scott, a houston native, was performing, that left eight people dead, including a 10-year-old child and 17 people hospitalized and, quote, scores of other people injured. we know that we have heard the houston police chief say that there were rumors circulating that there may have been tainted drugs involved in the case. he wouldn't go on any further to elaborate. that's going to be one of the key points we hope authorities

morgan chesky has more. >> you think about this mission and you say, i've seen this movie before, rightood closer to reality here than anything we could have imagined. today at vanderburg nasa scientists are launching a mission that has been years in the making. sending a spacecraft more than 6.5 million miles away to collide with an asteroid. all in hopes of figuring out what if any impact it will have on that space orbit. our planet not under any imminent threat or any others. all part of our planetary defense system that nasa hopes to learn a lot more about. >> this is the first test for us to develop a tool to protect us from incoming hazards from deep space. the technology that we're developing here we think in the future could save lives and protect property here on earth. >> now as that spacecraft begins its final approach to hit the smaller asteroid revolving around an even bigger one gathering images with an onboard camera combined with pictures from a satellite in hopes of understanding just how much of an impact this will have. scientists comparing it to slamming a golf cart
