hunter davis, fox whether in arkansas. thank you, hunter. arthel: . eric: i was a reminder the strength that the damage of the storms. damage at the nursing home, the one spot hit so hard by these storms. mayfield, kentucky, consumer products company of the candle factory operating overnight, 110 people inside working. seventy right now are missing. tornadoes killed dozens across several states, kentucky officials say the death toll in that state alone could top 100. at least two people killed in illinois, so far the one death reported in arkansas, at least seven states reporting some type of damage. tens of thousands of customers still without power at this moment. the death toll of course sadly expected to climb. joining us by phone, ajay gary, director of arkansas emergency management. what is the situation like right now? >> good afternoon, thank you. this morning did a flyover the damage, wanted to get an idea for the most significant damage was and the nursing home there. outstanding response by not only first responders but helping neighbors, t

and this is the same tornado that moved through arkansas. so we believe this could potentially be the united states' first quad-state tornado. that traveled across arkansas, parts of missouri, tennessee and kentucky, traversing over 250 miles. if verified that will be the longest single-track tornado in u.s. history. that dates back to the tristate tornado back in 1925. so where is this threat going? well, we've got a computer model that takes into consideration all of the current elements within the atmosphere. and we believe that the tornado threat will begin to diminish in the coming hours. in the next three to six hours, things will improve. but we still have the severe lines of strong winds pressing through portions of tennessee and kentucky. you can see the storm prediction center highlighting this area. remember, we had a level four out of five earlier in the evening in the overnight hours. again, the chance of tornado threat, diminishing as the hours progress. which is good news the straight line will be the next major concern. incre

arkansas congressman rick crawford, thanks for joining us. congressman: you bet, thanks.want to go back out with steve harrigan, he's live in mayfield, kentucky, steve. steve: john the flood lights have been put up. this is clearly a recovery operation at this point. they are going through tens of feet of metal of what used to be a candle-making factory that collapsed. this was no small operation. this was one of the largest employers in the town of mayfield. overnight, 110 workers at least inside that factory, many took shelter in the safe room but the building collapsed and some people say their ears popped before it did and many were killed instantly and some buried by the rubble and other broadcasting on facebook live on their phones calling for help and some of the first rescuers were actually coworkers, friends with family who rushed to the scene in the darkness to try to do what they can. now we are seeing heavy equipment and first responders from all across the state have come here but it's been 15 hours since anyone else was pulled out alive. of the 110 at the ti

i want to move over to arkansas now. we have at least one nursing home that was struck by a tornado. there are reports that monett manors, what that nursing home is called in arkansas. that was struck by a tornado. we understand that there was at least one fatality there. 20 people were trapped inside according to officials as that building collapsed, and we understand that that nursing home has about 86 beds. there were reports that another nursing home about 20 miles away in the town of truman was badly damaged. so far no reports of injuries coming from that as well. when you think about the multitude of states here that have been impacted by this. we also understand that thousands at last report i heard 180,000 people were without power in multiple states. more than 55,000 people in the state of kentucky without power alone. so this is just incredible, and you know, we are starting to just now see these images coming across social media. and i was also listening to the scanners, lindsey, and you know, that is quite em

we're still a couple of hours from sun up here in arkansas as well.ut, emergency operations gave us a call around 7:45 on friday. they reported tornado that touched down in the communities of bait and monet. in monet that tornado actually struck a nursie ing home. we have since learned that one person has passed away from injuries sustained during that tornado and several other folks injured there. people were trapped inside, first responders got there and were able to get a lot of people out of that nursing home there. and truman, arkansas, also a nursing home impacted. no one hurt that we know of at this point. we believe that everyone was able to be evacuated from that area. the interstate highway there in truman, traffic had to be shut down on that highway because of several overturned vehicles. so, some injuries there as well. we have several fire departments, sheriff's departments, ems agencies that are working these. we had across the state some severe weather activity just about in every area of arkansas. so, they've been stretched pretty thin

it started back in arkansas, i know on the ground from central arkansas almost all the way to -- the mississippi river. there are questions whether or not it picked up right over the river and then back on the ground, i know, all the way to mayfield and well beyond there. then questions whether or not it skipped. final totals could put it up around the longest track ever for any tornado. then you have one of the strongest tornadoes in december history, and one. deadliest tornadoes in modern history and deadliest in u.s. history. a historic tornadoes on many levels. >> brandon, about where were you overnight ahead of this tornado hitting mayfield? i mean what was your journey like? you're a storm chaser. you knew the forecast. you're on the road, at the ready. but where were you at the time of impact? >> i was watching the storm develop in arkansas, in my, my plan, my play, go catch it as it crossed interstate 65. i knew it would be moving very fast and that area had very conducive conditions to get violent. i thought it would really get going there, then i tried to catch it -- damage

. >>> with us now, arkansas governor asa hutchinson. i'm glad you're able to be with us on the phone. i know earlier you toured the damaged down of monette. can you give us an update on what you saw and the damage, the fatalities, stories behind that? >> yes, i this morning went to monette, which was a town that had so much damage in terms of its residences as a result of the tornado, but the greatest damage was in a nursing home that had 65 residents and we lost one of those residents, but it could have been much more devastating, except for the quick response of the people who got them out into another home. but also our warning system worked. there was at least 20 minutes' warning sound where the residents were able to get into a more protected area, which was simply the hallway. but whenever you're looking at the elderly residents of that nursing home, the fact that we lost one is very sad, but the rest of them were saved and are safe now. we also -- i also looked at a number of other cities that were damaged in the course of this h

i actually tracked the tornado, the first major tornado that hit monette, arkansas.ide, and then it went north—east of there and it tracked up to litchfield and did massive damage there, which was a fatality to general store at litchfield, arkansas. it continued to track north—east all the way to mayfield, doing major damage along the entire path and it's been on the south—west side, it has been in mayfield now for six hours and i can tell you the scene at the candle factory area is extremely grim. they have been bringing people both out alive, injured and there have been people who have died and it has been nonstop, ambulances coming in and out of the factory for about seven hours now, nonstop. and that continues... i've just had two more ambulances just passed me going into the factory. so they dug down there, they found the people and they are digging them out of rubble. there are still a number of people buried in the rubble, it is an active scene. it is going to go probably well into daylight, maybe even into the afternoon. the debris is about 20 feet deep, this

i'd like to give you a glimpse of arkansas today. first, hospitalizations are down by half from where they were at this time last year, but our omicron case count and the demand for testing has increased. in arkansas, we have a test to stay school program that's a pilot in 50 schools. we want to expand that, and right now we have sufficient tests to be able to do that. but we also as governors are getting pressure to do more and the need is great to do more in terms of the rapid test and the availability of it. and so, one word of concern or encouremenfor your team is that as the -- as you look for federal solutions that will help alleviate the challenge, make sure that we do not let federal solutions stand in the way of state solutions, and the production of 500 million rapid tests that will be distributed by the federal government is great, but obviously that dries up the supply chain for the solutions that we might offer as governor. and so, just that brief comment, before i turn it ov to you, mr. president. but i want to say pers

i looked at the arpa funds and in arkansas we had $1.5 billion. i thought that would be sufficient to get us with all the investment and rural broadband in our water projects but the arpa funding from our standpoint was diverted to deal with the consequences of the delta variant. at a time when i was looking at 1.5 billion that we had adequate resources but the variant and the resources to her hospital staff and other health needs depleted the arpa funds. for that reason the infrastructure funds that are now flowing will be critically important to help us to get to where we need to be in rural broadband and the other investments. the other point i would make is a nationally significance of ths bill itself before the bill passed we had the bridge the i-40, interstate 40 bridge over the mississippi river between tennessee and arkansas. it was closed for two months to cause an inspection reveal a critical fault in the bridge. it had to be closed for safety and that disrupted our supply chain and were mostly. even before christmas got here. it just il

more than 35 tornados were reported to have touched down in kentucky, illinois, tennessee, arkansas,souri, and mississippi. the strongest of those twisters potentially traveling over 200 miles over 4 of those states. homes have been completely leveled. cars have been strewn about in this shocking new drone video from bowling green, kentucky. the state's governor, andy beshear, saying it was the most devastating tornado event in the state's history and most likely the deadliest as well. the city of mayfield, kentucky, seemed to take one of the hardest hits. this harrowing video is of what was a candle factory in the city. but the roof collapsed from the storm, resulting in mass casualties there. the number, still unknown. beshear got emotional talking about what he had seen there earlier today. >> i just came from there. we're going to lose a lot of lives in that facility. and i pray that there will be another rescue. i pray there will be another one or two, but it's a very dire situation at this point. >> in illinois, multiple injuries and at least two deaths have been reported after

reported tornados that touched down as the outbreak swept through nine states friday night, from arkansas to ohio. >> the overnight death toll was lowered to 34 with most of the workers at a kentucky candle factory now accounted for. eight are dead and eight are still missing. >> reporter: here in mayfield, kentucky their downtown devastated. taking a direct hit. large buildings gutted. the first presbyterian church destroyed. the courthouse, the clock tower ripped off. homes, neighborhoods leveled. street after street we see it, homes wiped away. rooftops gone. the sides of homes torn off, bedrooms, living rooms exposed. the second floor of this home open to the sky. this was a candle factory. some 110 workers were inside when the tornado hit. they were working into the night, helping to fulfill orders in time for christmas. one of the employees, key yawna parsons-perez posting this. >> pray for us. >> reporter: they would reach her and pull her from the rubble. >> they got me out. >> reporter: the fire chief here describing rescuers crawling over the dead to get to the survivors. >> we

down through arkansas we were live in truman, arkansas a moment ago and you start to see things pop innessee and then into kentucky. it was really that mayfield candle factory that held a lot of drama from over the weekend. a briefing from the governor coming up at the top of the hour. it appears the initial possibility of many, many more deaths may not come to pass. we're hoping that's good news coming up. i will advance it one time and show you, you see the whole red area here? this is the path of the storm and if you started in mayfield, kentucky and went up past beaver dam to a county called breckenridge there in kentucky, you had one tornado they believe that was on the ground for 205 miles. it is stunning to think about that and rarely has it ever happened. this is the area where we are most focused on from northeastern arkansas to the area of beaver dam. let's go back with dana and see what the governor has to say. he has been out and about very little sleep for a good reason. a lot of people depending on him. >> dana: that's a part of the country you know well having grown up i
