so, what happens is there was a study done in 2013 done by the arnold foundation out of texas. they looked at low risk defendants in jails in kentucky. what they found is that those who were stuck in jail because they could not afford their bail over a short period of time, even 24 hours to 48 hours, were more likely to commit further crimes than similarly situated defendants who were actually -- who actually did not spend any time in jail because they either did not get a bail charge or because they could afford to write a check for their bill. the study looked at folks who were in jail up to 30 days because they could not afford their bail and again compared them to similarly situated defendants, all low risk defendants, meaning misdemeanors and low-level felonies. it found that the people who were stuck in jail because they could not afford their bail were 70% more likely to commit further crimes than those who were home with their families and able to continue with their jobs. think about it, it makes sense. we disrupt people's lives and we take away their cars, their apart
