jordan. it puts the members of the committee in a difficult spot, john. what do you do? do you hold your own colleague in contempt? that creates all kinds of challenges inside the body itself. >> so, john, we have been getting a lot of viewer mail particularly from the dakotas. what is going to happen with john thune, the republican senator from south dakota, the number two republican in the senate right now. everyone asking is he going to run for re-election. explain to us why this question is important and what the outcome will be. . >> sure. why it is important is two reasons. one, the pure matter of succession. obviously, mitch mcconnell will turn 80 in february. it is widely assumed he will not be in that spot more than the next couple of years. who is going to take over for mcconnell? mainstream conservatives like john thune, do they still want to serve in the congress with president trump as defacto leader of the gop. john, if he does not run again and retires at the age of 60, on the precipice of potentially being a leader, that's an extraordinary

john, what do you do with that? >> well, that's not the normal jordan answer.isp and pretty clear on most of his answers. his mind is probably trying to calculate, well, what kind of exposure do i have at this stage in answering that question? and i think he does have exposure because of the texts he forwarded the day before, i'll tell ya, if they ever start pursuing conspiracy charges, he walked right into a conspiracy, uh, to obstruct congress. to -- was it a seditious conspiracy? may -- may well have been. so i think he knows he has exposure, and if he ever is in front of that committee, he will probably have to take the fifth. that's probably another reason he doesn't want to go. >> yeah, you -- you can assume that. look, republican congressman scott perry. he rejected this voluntary request as well, outright. kind of slamming the committee. obviously, jordan is likely to follow suit in that. you've said that they should compel him with a subpoena. but how big of a deal would this be? because is there a risk at this point, as we have kind of seen this trend

jordan. joining me now is capitol hill correspondent garrett haake, pete williams and, again, john. so, garrett, what are they asking for from congressman jordan? >> benny thompson says that jordan was in touch multiple times with donald trump on the 6th itself and they want to ask him about those discussions. what was discussed whether it was a text or phone call during the hours that the violence was going on. what was discussed about the possibility of continuing the challenge to the election results after the capitol was cleared. the committee chairman's letter also points out that jordan has said publicly when he was asked about the january 6th since that he has nothing to hide, almost daring him to answer questions. >> bres, what do you make of this news? >> well, you know, they crossed a threshold when they asked scott perry for information. they're clearly setting up for kevin mccarthy. that seems like the one they're really interested. if republicans win the majority. i think, you know, i'm just not sure where this goes. i mean if jordan talked to trump, you know, and he say

>> well, john, the committee considers jim jordan to be a key witness because he played such a big roleo prop up the former president's claim that the election -- or that there was widespread fraud, that there were problems with the election and his ideas for trying to overturn the results. including, according to the committee, they know that he was in touch with some of the -- these folks that were sitting at -- at the willard hotel near the white house there on the day before and -- and during the -- the day of the january 6th rally that the president had talking to people over there -- trump associates. and we also know that as -- as saw in that little clip, he was communicating with the president. we don't know how many times. we know of at least once. the committee says they know at least once. perhaps, more times that he has talked to the president that day. and they also know that he forwarded that message that you read just a minute ago. um, so a lot of these things, they know that -- that jordan has a lot of information that could explain some of the things that went on on jan
