airports to look for omicron, sanjay. will they be able to find cases and contact trace to contain omicron? what should we be bracing for as this goes? >> well, you know, this whole idea of the testing and tracing, you know, the things we talked about two years ago in the beginning of all this, we never really got to that point. we still, in this country, we're doing about a million and a half tests per day. you may remember, don, the road to recovery sort of counted on getting 20 million to 30 million tests per day. we're not anywhere close to that, and it's not really a surprise to me that we have not found evidence of omicron in the united states yet, but that doesn't mean it's not here, and it's probably already spreading. i don't think this is going to be a question of, hey, look, we're going to specifically contain, get our hands around omicron. i think what the message is, going back to what we're seeing out of israel and south africa, the unvaccinated percentage of people in this country, if they have been conside

sanjay gupta. dr. besser, so in light of this case in the u.s. which was inevitable, how do you think the cdc is handling all this behind the scenes right now? >> well, you know, anderson, i think the steps that are being taken, being aggressive until we know more is the right thing to do. it's -- you only have one chance to get ahead of a newly spreading strain of a disease. and, you know, i'm -- my -- my hope is that we will take these measures. people will up their game to protect themselves, and when we learn more, hopefully we'll learn that -- that this is not the -- the -- the dangerous strain that eludes vaccines that we're concerned it -- it could be. but you want to take the steps upfront, and not hope that that's the case. you want the science to prove that the measures that you are taking are -- are appropriate or can be eased up. >> sanjay, as we reported the first omicron case in the u.s. was someone who had recently traveled to south africa. do you have any sense or estimate of how soon we could see, sanjay, community spread from --

sanjay gupta on this.ar the latest data from the nih about how that current vaccines fare against omicron but how much do we know about how it's spreading? >> it does appear to be spreading more quickly than we've seen with previous variants. that's thbeen the big question. when delta started to spread in may, it was around a percent of the overall new cases. but by the end of summer, it was the dominant variant. it had a doubling time of roughly every two weeks or so. let me show you now in the country, the vast majority of cases are still in the united states delta. but we also know that the numbers have been increasing over the last couple of weeks. 0.4% to 3% now for the country but if you look at new york, new jersey, some of the data there shows a very significant uptick. just over -- the last two weeks. that's something that, you know, has been anticipated. we saw evidence of that in europe as well. so this should not be a surprise and it's pretty more clearly more contagious. in terms of severity.

sanjay gupta. the author of "world war c: lessons from the covid-19 pandemic and how to prepare for the next one." very important book. also dr. ashish jha, the dean of the brown university school of public health. sanjay, we knew this was coming, but now that the cdc has confirmed the first case of the omicron variant here in the united states, how do you see this playing out? could this become the dominant variant here? >> i don't think we know yet, wolf. i've been talking to lots of folks about this. there's a couple of critical questions that need to be answered. is this more transmissible? does it spread more easily than the delta variant? and does it escape some of the protection from vaccines. so far it looks like the vaccines are holding up pretty well, but when you look at south africa and the trajectory of what's happened over there over these different phases, that middle peak there beta, that became the dominant strain in south africa in october and going into march. but it did not beco

sanjay gupta and senior political analyst john avlon.anjay, a positive covid test three days before the event, days before we were told the president did have covid. what questions does this raise for you and what should have happened inside the white house? . >> well, if this is true, i mean, this is incredibly reckless, obviously. keep in mind we're talking about someone who tested positive but also if it's true had symptoms. it wasn't an incidental test. he had symptoms, wasn't feeling well, and that was of concern. the way i read it this time, it sounds like, and reported extensively at the time, they were doing pcr tests at the white house. those are the gold standard tests. they did have these types at the white house. they come back in typically a half hour or so. it tested positive. that, in conjunction with him having symptoms, would have been to trigger isolation, contact tracing. three days later, putting other people at risk, including the potential president of the united states. this is a test done on has someone developed

sanjay gupta and leana wen join us with some answers. we begin with cnn's nick watt. >> reporter: covid-19 cases and hospitalizations climbed around 40% this past month. deaths, says the cdc, forecast to rise in the month ahead. the delta variant still rampant. omicron on the rise. >> it's here now, and it's spreading and it's going to increase. for unvaccinated we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death, unvaccinated. for themselves, their families, and hospitals they'll soon overwhelm. >> very soon it's going to be the dominant variant. we've seen that in south africa. we're seeing it in the uk. and i'm absolutely certain that's what we're going to be seeing here relatively soon. >> reporter: for the vaccines this variant is now the most complete escapee, say researchers in the new preprint study, although vaccines are still highly effective at preventing severe disease or death. >> it is reassuring that these infections seem to be less severe. but that's really only true probably if you're a healthy person who's been immun

walensky. >> sanjay, fascinating conversation.there, the question early on after we got the name omicron was got that greek letter, where is dr. walensky, especially after we saw some confusion over boosters and who should get them. the cdc director was crucial to hear from her and we didn't for a couple of days. >> yeah, she just talked about that. she said she was working over the weekend. you're right. typically we do hear from the cdc first in these situations, they are the ones that usually announce this sort of thing. but i guess dr. fauci and others were out there talking about this. she was at the briefing monday which was three days later. but you heard her explanation there. >> sanjay, i'm so glad you brought up the issue of natural immunity. because i have read research that suggests and you often hear people say that that provided more protection than a vaccine and i've read more research that suggests that a vaiccine provids much longer lasting and stronger than natural immunity after you've caught covid. so is it not

sanjay gupta joins me now.lore this particular use? >> well, you know, what happens when you report on something like this for a decade, you're talking to researchers and scientists and families all the time. one thing that happened when cannabis became permitted for treating seizure disorders, what you found is a lot of those children had signs of autism. and these researchers were coming saying autism symptoms were improving if not going away in a lot of these children as well. so they started doing research, and it's interesting because you follow these trials over time, you start to see some of this data. people often think of these things as more anecdotal. we tell the story of a particular girl here, but she's embl emblematic, kara is, of so many others. >> how much data is there showing this effect is broad? >> as has often happened in the world of cannabis research, the early data often comes from overseas and oftentimes israel. so sometimes -- so we've seen data from israel for several years. they've b

sanjay gupta. 90%, sanjay, is a figure you don't see a lot in science. >> no. we don't.h the number that we hear oftentimes when we talk about the vaccine effectiveness overall in terms of reducing illness here, remember, even going back a year, was around 90%. and if you put up the graphs again, let me show you something, john, it is important, when you look overall at just vaccine effectiveness, the trend line is going up. it is worth pointing out the numbers were small. relatively small and reduced even further. that's a blown in graphic if you will. you're seeing it at a magnified level. two messages here, the vaccine effectiveness with the two shots was still pretty good. but clearly was waning. and then over time after they got the boosters, that was sort of the end of august, you did see the numbers come down. so you had 90% effectiveness with the two shots and went to 99% with the booster. so, yeah, clearly the boosters made a difference on top of something that was already pretty good with the overall two-shot regiment. >> israel -- for folks aged 12 and up. whe

sanjay gupta. sanjay, just tonight, dr.quote, almost inevitable. i often ask you this near the beginning of our covid town halls. where do you think we are now in the course of this pandemic? >> well, we are still very much in the middle of a -- of a delta surge here and anderson, we knew as we were going into the cooler, drier months, the spread, the numbers were going to increase, always. it was just a question of how much. let me show you this graph we put together, sort of give you an idea. this is looking at england looking at omicron and delta. what we're seeing here is sort of how these both started. so, the blue line is how delta started. you can see it was -- it grew pretty quickly, but it took a little bit of time to get there. with omicron, just a few days after the first case was identified, you can see it's a much more upward trajectory. that line looks like it may be plateauing a little bit there, but there's no indication of that overall in terms of the numbers, so, omicron is certainly growing a lot. if you

sanjay gupta. thanks for joining us. always a treat to have you in studio. conversation with cdc director dr. rochelle walensky. you asked her if she was worried omicron could become the dominant strain here in the u.s. here's what she said. >> it might. we don't yet know. what we do know is that early data and even mutation data are telling us that this may well be a more transmissible variant than delta. and so this is going to take some time to sort out. we are prepared, though. we are doing genomic sequencing in all these states. >> what did you make of that? >> we are doing a lot more genoming sequencing but most of these variants are typically found in other places first. a large part of that is we're still not doing enough overall testing. pcr tests. >> in the united states. >> in the united states. a million to a million and a half a day. at one point we were talking about 20 or 30 million a day. maybe we'll get to that point. dr. fauci thinks we will. if you look at what's happened in south africa specifically, this tells the tale because you look a

sanjay gupta with us now. you just spoke this morning with pfizer's chief scientific officer. this sounds like good news with the caveat that it is coming to us from the company that is responsible for the vaccine itself. what do we need to know this morning? >> yeah, we do need to hear to your point from the cdc and fda about this data, but what we are hearing from pfizer is potentially good news. the headline for me, when i spoke to him, was that basically, you know, we used to think of the significant protection against illness that people got from two doses of the vaccine with the original strain. they're saying you can get that same level of protection against omicron with three doses. so this is the two shots and then the boost. here is how dr. michael dolson put it. >> i advise, given on this new d data that we are presenting that everyone should get vaccinated and those that have given the two doses should as soon as possible get the third dose. where do we need a vaccine or maybe need for additional boost as we get into spring '22 that needs to be evaluated. we do bel

and as i said in that interview with sanjay, dr. a formgt out where people could address the outbreak in a way that would be optimal from a public health standpoint, and then the day after we did that, when that came out, i'll say it again as i said to sanjay, i was floored by that because that was totally counterproductive. >> you know, we're at this point now nearly two years in. i know you have got to be exhausted. so many people are, though. there is the unknown that omicron is bringing with it, the confusion about how many shots do i need to be fully protected. you did clear some of that up this afternoon, but i just wonder, there's no way to predict when this pandemic is going to be over, but given how exhausted, how worn out people are, what do you say to some of these folks who just say i can't do it anymore? i'm done. >> you have to do it, erica. i mean, everybody understands and we all have been through a two-year ordeal that is really unprecedented in the history of public health in our country. that is for sure, but we c

sanjay gupta. let's start with this news. the cdc vaccine advisers voting to recommend pfizer or moderna over the johnson & johnson vaccine. what is this about? what do the 16 million americans who got the j&j vaccine need to know about this? >> first of all, if people have received it already, i don't think this is cause for concern. because we know that the vaccine has been out there for sometime. if they were going to have some of these side effects nick was talking about, they typically happen soon after people receive the shot within the first couple weeks or so. so it is still protective vaccine. but what the advisers have said is two things. one is that if you look at the mrna vaccines they are more effective than johnson & johnson. number two is there is a very small but higher risk of something that is known as these blood clots with the johnson & johnson vaccine. let me show you the numbers specifically here. give you an idea how rare this is, we looked at the cases through the end of august and there were a total o

sanjay gupta. right now only about a quarter of the fully vaccinated population has received a booster shot. and no state can claim more than half of its vaccinated population has gotten the booster. are we in trouble as we head into the holidays? >> well, we know how to handle this, jake, with what we've learned over the last two years. the largest problem is still the unvaccinated in terms of potential trouble. in terms of severe illness and in terms of hospitals potentially becoming overwhelmed. if you look at boosters, it's interesting and look at the willingness to get boosters. around a quarter of people have received their boosters. what we've seen with omicron, though, is there's definitely been a shift in terms of willingness to get it. you can see definitely will. 37%. a lot of reports of being challenging to get boosters right now because there's a lot of people wanting them at the same time. it's only about 18% of the bottom of that that says probably will not or definitely will not. so

sanjay gupta. more and more studies are confirming that boosters help prevent severe infection and yet only about one-quarter of vaccinated americans have gotten their booster -- you got yours. i got my booster. tell viewers why they should get them, too. >> part of this may be changing in terms of the definitions just mentioned, the idea that fully vaccinated might mean three shots. i think that would make a big difference. why should they get it? we are getting more and more data. israel has always sort of given us data a few weeks if not months in advance so if you look at the impact of boosters now, up until quite recently, coming up until the beginning of december, boosters started there at the end of august. numbers were going up. admittedly israel was already doing a pretty good job. though the numbers were going up they were still relatively small. you see what happened with boosters over the next few months after that. that's cases. if you look at deaths over all you also saw a significant

sanjay gupta and dr. paul offit, his book entitleland you bet your life from blood transfusion to mass vaccination, the long history of medical innovation. thank you for joining us. sanjay, you just heard president biden moments ago issue this grave warning that we're looking at what he describes as a winter of severe illness and death for people who are not vaccinated. should we be prepared for a surge from omicron that dwarves what we actually saw from delta? >> well, we don't know for sure yet, wolf. but this does appear to be more transmissible. we've been looking at some of the data, let me show you a couple of things just to give you an idea when you look at omicron and compare it to delta, this graph here is basically looking at what happens after the first few days. if we have that, we could show it. but basically delta took some time to ramp up. this is the line in blue. with omicron, it just took off right away. so that is i think part of the concern here. speaking to its contagiousness, and als

what we are learning about the omicron variant, sanjay.oesn't protect people from getting infected with omicron but it does indicate the first cases have been mild. what does that tell you? >> well, if this data holds up, it's sort of -- a lot of this makes sense in the sense that the idea of the vaccine is to really prevent people from developing serious illness. if you look specifically at the idea of infection, how well that works, the numbers that athena just talked about. 43 cases that have been confirmed, this data coming from the cdc. 34 of them were fully vaccinated. 14 did have this additional booster. six previously infected as well. so i think there's two things to keep in mind. the vaccines may be doing the bulk of their work in terms of preventing people from getting sick. that's why the majority have mild illness. also we still have the same problem that i think you and i have been talking about for two years now. there's not enough testing happening. we don't know the true denominator here. when deal with something as transm

sanjay gupta. i think we are in some ways the most complicated part of this pandemic and the most challenging. because there are trends that don't exactly always line up. people double vaccinated and boosted. but you are seeing these cases shooting up. the lines in new york city where the test centers aren't even open and they're around the block. in florida, there aren't as many cases of these mobile drive-through testing. people are concerned. people know people with it. and they just want to know what's going on. >> yeah. i think there's no doubt. and we see this, you know, we saw this after delta when delta started to emerge there was a clamoring for tests and people getting vaccinated. we never really had a clear denominator because we haven't done enough testing. you remember at some point they were talking about the fact that we need to be doing 20 million tests a day, which i know sounds ridiculous when you hear that. that is what the path to recovery was that was put out by harvard school

sanjay gupta. so let's start first with that new study. what do we know? specifically about omicron and the effectiveness of these vaccines. but delta is still the biggest concern. so we do get -- we do have some data from moderna specifically about delta. looking at hospitalizations, looking at infections. we'll separate those out. and look, against hospital admission, what the vaccines are really designed to do to prevent severe illness, it remains effective against delta. that data holds up. what a lot of people are paying attention to is the waning of immunity when it comes to preventing infections overall. so high in the first two months and then wanes to about 80% after that. the larger story that is also part of this as well is still the distinction between the vaccinated and unvaccinated overall. if you just look at hospitalizations of covid patients and say let's separate out the unvaccinated from the vaccinated, look, this is a story that is being told with this graph. the green line is the vaccinated. and the red line is the unvaccinated. so as
