joining me now new warn being our kids is surgeon general vivek murthy. me start first of all with your advisory, dr. murthy. you lay out some really alarming trends. one in five people report experiencing symptoms of depression, one in four suffer from anxiety. is the mental health toll of the pandemic an epidemic in its own right? >> well, dana, i'm so concerned with our children because there is an epidemic, if you will, of mental health challenges that they've been facing and partly because of the mandemic. children have lost loved ones, 140,000 kids lost a caregiver. their lives are turned upside down, haven't been able to see friends as often as they would. it's taken a toll. that's why we've seen anxiety and depression rates go up among kids. our kids were struggling long before the pandemic. the decade before the pandemic we saw a 40% increase in the number of high school students who felt persistent feelings of hopelessness or sadness, more increases in suicide rates among kids to aremember lag levels so our children have been struggling for a wh

vivek murthy if you come up from a test, get a positive result, what should you do, especially assume you don't have symptoms. what should you do >> that's an important question because people can transmit the virus, in some cases even if they don't have symptoms if you test positive, important thing to do is number one, you have to isolate for a period of time the cdc recommends ten days because you could spread it to someone else something else to do, notify people you have been in contact with in the last 48 hours because they may be at risk. if they have symptoms, they should get tested as well. and they need to quarantine if they were in close contact. >> do you fear people take that as a license to go forward with their life knowing they're infected >> we hope it is a milder variant overall. but i want people to know it is not just about our health, it is about health of the people we love, people we interact with. if you feel mild symptoms, that's good, but we don't want you to pass the virus to somebody else that may be vulnerable >> we're seeing some cities take measures to p

surgeon general vivek murthy. he was interviewed earlier today. and over the past couple of days he's been talking about these new travel policies and all things covid-19. and he was asked why only we're seeing these restrictions for international travelers and why not include domestic travelers. because we already know that the omicron variant is here in the u.s. and has been for some time. and this was his response. >> the international and domestic travel are in fact different, and the international front, as you mentioned, there are a number of measures we have taken like vaccine requirements requiring testing before people get on those flights. from a domestic standpoint, what we have seen is that if people do in fact wear masks, well-fitted masks, good quality masks, they can significantly reduce their risk on domestic flights. and finally just keep in mind this. we have taken a number of measures domestically to ensure that we increase vaccination rates, which is ultimately our key to ending this pandemic. >> so, that was about travel restr

vivek murthy. doctor, thank you so much for being here. what should we make of this news of the omicron variant now making up 73% of cases in the united states when it was -- when it made up a fraction of that last week? >> well, kate, i -- absolutely recognize that this news is going to be concerning to many who hear it. and especially, in the end of two years battling this pandemic. a lot of people are feeling tired and i absolutely understand that. in terms of where omooic ron is now, we expected it was going to rise quickly and we learned today that it's about 73% of cases. this is similar to what we have seen in other countries, a rapid rise that has overtaken the delta variant. but in moments like this, i try to look for what is going for us. and it turns out, we have a lot that's going for us right now, kate. we know our vaccines still work and work well, especially with the booster shot at doing their most important job, which is keeping us out of the hospital and saving our life. we know that our masks still work. that testing can
