she spoke earlier today with o of moderna's top scientists. amna: dr.burton is the chief medical officer of moderna. and he joins us now. dr. burton, welcome to the "newshour." thank you for making the time. let's begin with vaccines and young kids, because this is on a lot of people's minds right now. parents of kids under the age of 5 are really struggling, worried about how to keep their kids and families safe. a couple of weeks ago, moderna had announced you're going to share efficacy data on your vaccine for kids aged 2 to 5 by march. so, should we take that to mean that parents shouldn't expect a moderna vaccine for those young kids anytime before march? dr. burton: well, so look, first of all, i share those sentiments. certainly, with omicron, those little kids, 2-to-5-year-olds have been disproportionately impacted and affected. and it's an unmet need. you know, we need a good vaccine for them. we are on track to have data, as you say, by march. we will get that to regulators as soon as we possibly can afterwards. and the data that we have had i

amy: this pot you rais with moderna, which got a fortune from u.s. taxpayers -- we are talking millions if not a billion dollars -- to do the research to develop this, and yet they are not willing to share the formula. >> here was the problem. the oblem was the policymakers not only ithe u.s., but globally, were so fixed on speed and innovation. it was all about the brand-new technologies, rapidly immunizing populations without that situational awareness to understand when you have only to rely on a brand-new technology, there's a learning curve. we need 9 billion doses of vaccines sub-saharan africa, latin america, and southeast asia and nobody was able to take a step back as a new first-year engineering graduate student will tell you, you cannot go from zero to 9 billion right away. you better balance it with old technologies. that was the frustration we had, we could not persuade the big policymakers that that was the way to go in addition to what they were doing. fortunately, we were able to do it. we could have done it faster had we had support.

so how did you common on visor and moderna and and report that out? it was a scramble. it was a i mean the first thing i did after well wall signing my publishing contract was i was putting out feelers to the big players, you know in hindsight. we see that say merck and sanofi were not successful, but i think those were two of the first companies i might have reached out to i was also looking at these small companies that i just thought. whoa, that's really neat. and i was i i thought when i started this that i was going to try to get in the room with somebody's companies. i was going to try to get into zoom meetings. i was going to experience things in real time, but i was completely shut out. there's kind of that fake until you make it attitude that you have to have as a reporter which is like, all right, i can do this. i'm on the the biggest story of my life and i'm gonna succeed and then it was just doors were being shut, you know, we all know moderna was a very secretive company and i remember just being frustrated every time i like saw ceo step on bonsell giving a
