>> ben crump is the attorney for the family of emory arbery. he joins me now. ben, let's just talk about your reaction to this verdict. on one hand, it shouldn't be surprising at all that they secured a conviction, on the other hand, as you point out, it was incredibly surprising to get this outcome, especially in the state of georgia. how have you process what happened today? >> it was historic, alex, in every sense of the word because we have to remember we are in the deep south. you think about how many times people have been killed, in the state of georgia, and they have been racial -- but there was no federal hate crime verdict ever until, as wanda cooper jones said, 22, to 2022. she called it super tuesday because it was so significant, you finally have a hate crime conviction that we pray will set a new precedent to have more of these cases brought, where we know that race is a motivating factor. >> ben, i think a lot of people followed the first trial. we saw a lot of the footage of it. we saw a lot of the coverage of it. but we did not know what really

we heard ben crump flip to that. >> i hope so. i hope there are more prosecutions., but for wanda cooper jones, this case wouldn't have ever happened. the state's attorney refused to charge these men. it wasn't until the state stepped in that we saw the state prosecutions. and we know with respect even to the federal charges, we heard wanda cooper jones said let's not thnk thank them. we can't do anything but i think applaud wanda cooper jones for her tenacity and the way she persevered for this case. that shouldn't be the way federal civil rights cases have to come to trial. we rely upon our justice department to prosecute those cases, particularly cases like this where the racial animus is so evident. so hopefully there will be more prosecutions but hopefully it will send a message to the justice department to do its job. >> that racial animus would not have come out if the federal trial hadn't happened. none of that was in play. >> she's amazing. she has been amazing during this whole process having to fight for justice for her own son. jury deliberations are goi

interview are daunte wright's parents, katie and aubrey wright, along with the family's attorney, ben crump. thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> thank you. >> mrs. wright, i want to start with you. what went through your mind when you heard that sentence? >> anger, i was very upset. i was in disbelief that the person that killed my son less than a year ago was going to spend less time in prison than 20-year-olds on marijuana charges. >> the judge said this was, quote, a cop who made a tragic mistake drawing her firearm thinking it was a taser and ended up killing a young man. that was her explanation for the lighter sentence below the court guidelines. mr. wright, what kind of sentence were you expecting? >> i was expecting more than what she received. you know, it was a little bit easier to sleep at night thinking that, you know, she was going to be convicted and serve a little time but, you know, nothing could -- i don't know what -- i don't know. i just thought she was going to get more time than what she did. that was like a slap to the face. >> and i know, mrs. wright,

it's one of the first time that this has successfully been prosecuted according to ben crump in the stateever. why is that? >> so, ali, this prosecution was symbolic in part because the three defendants had already been sentenced to life in prison in the state murder case. the federal convictions are insurance in the unlikely event that the state convictions are overturned. more importantly, the jury represents an official -- official recognition. that mr. arbery was killed because he was black. race didn't come up in the state trial because the prosecutors didn't have to prove racial animus. but mr. arbery's family said that it was important that the evil of racism be named and legally recognized. and that's what the jury did today. finding that the three defendants violated mr. arbery 's right to be in a public street and they did so based on anti black prejudice. >> you bring up an interesting point, because people, say why go through this process? cases do get overturned. but the state trial, that convicted these three men, and give them life in prison, is based on an entirely differe
