. >> i want to bring in nbc's leigh ann caldwell on capitol hill, jake sherman is co-founder of punch bowl news and an nbc news political contributor. good to see you both. leigh ann, what are you hearing? how big would it be for the committee if giuliani cooperates with the subpoena? >> good morning, chris. well, rudy giuliani has been -- has had his hands on lots of these schemes that were contrived after the election day until january 6t including things like seizing voting machines. there were talks about fake electors, sending those to congress instead of the actual electors that show joe biden won. there were discussions with data officials to get them to overturn the election results. there's been reporting that rudy giuliani has been a part of many of these conversations. if rudy giuliani were actually to come before the committee and actually provide information, it would be extremely crucial for the committee. this would be a very good get. giuliani is theying there will be cooperation with the committee, but we don't know what cooperation means. does that mean he's going to

joining me now to cuss is jake sherman, co-founder of "punchbowl news." what are these obstacles?nch of republicans to strip money for vaccine mandates. this is something they tried last time around in the last government funding fight. did not work, and it looks like it will not work again this time. they are demanding an amendment vote which democratic leaders hope will fail. number two, senator blackburn, republican from tennessee, is trying to find out more information about why she thinks, this is not confirmed in any way, shape or firm, why she thinks the government is handing out crack pipes to people. the boyden administration has said they are not handing out crack pipes, and there's no truth to said situation, but she's waiting on a response from hhs, and i would only say this. i mean, these are -- there's not a lot of time to solve these problems. as you noted the government runs out of money at the end of this week, so they need to figure this out in the next couple of days. >> jake, quickly, national security adviser jake sullivan privately briefed lawmakers on ukrain

joining us now co-founder of punchbowl news jake sherman. he is an msnbc contributor. morning, jake. thanks for being here. in truth, build back better has been said dead since december. when pronounced as such on fox? is it going to be a separate patchwork legislation? give us the state of play? >> there is no state of play, jon. i mean, there are no discussions. there are no discussions with manchin in the white house. there are no discussion with manchin and his leadership. there are no serious discussions about reviving the build back better act, or anything close to it. that's just -- that's just the reality. now, could that change? sure. but the added complication here, jon, moving on, the democrat from new mexico had a stroke yesterday and that robs democrats of their majority. no other way to put it that it robs democrats of that 50th vote. so anything they want to do, they'll have to rely on republicans to do it. so, that's the situation that the democratic leadership faces right now. any, again, if they want to revive something that looks like the bbb, it wil

joining me now is nbc news white house correspondent mike memoli and jake sherman. so these visitor logs, mike, what might they tell us? >> obviously the white house and the january 6th select committee is very interested in seeing what kind of foot traffic was going through the white house on that day. there's a lot of consideration about who was potentially meeting with the president as he -- the former president, i should say, as he was watching these events unfold. but now what's interesting about this, katy, is we first reported last october that the biden white house's posture on these record requests, which was that this constitutional consideration of executive privilege in their view should not apply to the former president when the very issue that's being investigated is an effort to subvert the constitution itself. so at first glance the letter that we saw today from the white house counsel is not a new position from this administration. what's significant about this letter, though, is the timeline. in the past there has been a 30-day request for these do

joining me now, jake sherman, founder of punch bowl news and an nbc news political contributor and ashleyical analyst. talk about how washington is gearing up for the supreme court confirmation process. >> well, both sides in the senate are deep in research -- all three of the main candidates, i think you're seeing from senate republicans that there's not going to be a massive fight. they don't -- they know that they don't really have much in the way of options to block this supreme court nominee. and it's not going to fundamentally change the shape of the supreme court. that doesn't mean it's not going to be messy, it's not going to be tense at times, but i have to imagine that based on my reporting, that senate republicans are going to take it relatively easy. now, senate democrats have said, dick durbin, the senate judiciary chair has said that they'll try to move this within 40 days of it being announced. and as you noted, we are within that kind of red zone that they need to get this nominee announced in the next couple of days. and i would say this. from a practical and political po

"the washington post" was the first to report on this ripped up records story. tell us more about what you learned from these do you means? >> jose, thank you so much for having us. we know that the first trench of documents from the national archives of record administration made it to the january 6th committee investigating the insurrection but that when they arrived, some of these documents were actually torn up and pieced back together. scotch taped, reconstructed. now, we're not exactly sure how many of these documents. i think the tranche that was delivered to the committee was ultimately about 700 pages worth of records, nor are we sure what exactly these documents consisted of. we do know that from reviewing legal records over which records the former president sought to seek privilege over that it might have included speeches, memos, handwritten note by former chief of staff mark me dose, and we don't know if it was the former president who did in fact tear

. >>> we just learned senators will receive a call tomorrow, and joining me now is jake sherman. jake, what is the discussion about sanctions on capitol hill? are lawmakers happy with what they have seen so far or are they pushing for more? >> i would say they are pretty happy, katy. there is a keen awareness right now among the people that i have talked to on the democratic and republican side on the need to stay unified in such a high-stakes global situation, and they are calling for more. joe biden has significant sanction authority, very significant. he did what he did yesterday and today without the go ahead of congress because he's allowed to. the question will turn to whether congress needs to give the president additional sanction authority, and that's where the conversation will center around next week. that's what we are going to hear a lot about. remember, next week is a pretty high-stakes week in domestic politics, too. we are going to most likely -- if we believe what the -- the question will become is what the president does between yesterday and next week, is that e
