jim? >> nick paton walsh, to you and your team, stay safe there. you're in the middle of it. we want you to stay safe. in kyiv where matthew chance is, it's become regular the sound of air sirens in kyiv, we heard them in lviv. what's the level of the air sought and have you heard russian ground forces close to the capital? >> reporter: well, you're right, within the past few minutes, there were those air raids sirens that went off across the city, across the center of the city, but it's very, very quiet in the areas as i look across the ukrainian capital right now, very, very quiet. we're not seeing any kind of activity, barely anybody on the streets. there is a real sense of anxiety because russian troops are not far away. have we seen any? yes, we have. we've been about 15 miles outside of the city center and we reported a lot came to cause with the russian special forces group that have taken a strategic air base. the antonov air base, they said. again, 15 miles or so from the city's center. there are other reports that russian forces are just in this direction here to th

jim, i want you to stand by. i want to get now to cnn's nic paton-walsh who's joining us. he is in odessa. nic, jim mentioned the explosions and what you're hearing in odessa. talk to us. what's going on? >> yeah, don. i mean, you're getting the sun rising slightly here. we heard in the last half an hour i would say probably a total of three or four blasts. relatively distant compared to the central part of odessa that i'm in. there's the port just over here as well. and so it was quite hard to assess exactly what those booms may have been targeting because of the distance. two about 20 minutes ago. so the question is are we seeing something beginning in the regions around odessa or were those blasts specifically aimed at targets and this was limited? but to point out the importance of here, don, this is the strategic port city for ukraine on the black sea. its third largest he city, predominantly russian speaking. and possibly many have been concerned that in the worst case scenario could be a target for some sort of amphibious landing to establish control of this sort of vital part of ukr

walsh joins us from a city near the black sea in southern ukraine. nick, what are you seeing today? >> reporter: just to let you know here, jim,odwe in odesa ths a curfew. we have spent the last 24 hours in mykolaiv that has been under fierce russian assault. we saw the heroism, the grit, the determination of locals there to live and to resist the russian forces. here is what we saw. the bridge here hasn't been raised for as long as they can remember but neither has the sleepy port town of mykolaiv invaded. it is likely exchanges with russian paratroopers who we're told landed nearby. locals struggling to keep up with soldiers edgy. the fear here russian saboteurs like these two suspects thrown to the ground by soldiers. then the sirens go off. and it is back in the basement for mothers and cats. here the noise of what russia would do to these towns in the name of subjugation. turning lights off and businesses closed in a hurry. life persisting, caught between hoping this is short-lived and wondering if it may go on forever. behind it all, in empty streets the fear they may be overrun and whether each huge blast will be the d

jim sciutto in lviv. i want to get to odessa and our nick paton walsh on the ground there with the very latest.don, i mean it is extraordinary here. we were woken at about 5:00 a.m. by three or four explosions, and subsequently about an hour ago, heard another two. but at this stage, this strategic port city is still quiet. signs of police on the streets and concern here. definitely people sort of staying at home. but it's remarkable that we are so far away from the east, from the north, where we've seen these troop movements, heard and felt the likelihood of the threat for days now. but still explosions have been heard here this morning in this key port city. it shows possibly the breadth of the ambition here behind what russian president vladimir putin is possibly getting under way here. and one thing i think it's important to remind our viewers about is his comments in the last hours or so. he says, now, a few important words for those who may be tempted to intervene in ongoing events from the outside. that may be a reference towards nato or the united states, who he has long falsely used as
