correspondent for "rolling stone" jack crosbie was in the city of kharkiv.me here now. good to see. you >> thanks for having me. >> you made a journey out of the country, a journey that millions have made in the past two weeks, basically at record setting rates. what was that journey like? >> as i talked about in my latest piece, you can take a train via some routine between cities, across the country, coming across kharkiv or you can go by car. a lot of people do it by both in different sets. i took a car and was lucky enough to get a ride out of kharkiv. and i started to see this indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas. before that, the shelling had mostly been on outskirts. but on that monday, when we, left it's really when things started to come in closer. so, i did it in several ways, jumping from city to city in cars, resting a few the days here and they, are starting out the trip. and that was a journey that many people -- and each stop along the way there were a lot of people coming. and then others that i know, they just took trains across. >> and

. >> we are praying with you and it is heartbreaking and, you know, jack crosby, do we know you are a journalist who's been back and forth to ukraine and seen this firsthand. you're the independent observer we expect and pray for journalists to be. number one, do you know any news of this kidnapped mayor, number one? number two, tell us what you've seen. >> i don't have any news or information on the kidnapped mayor. there are many parts of ukraine right know that have communication blackouts where people haven't heard from family members. i myself can't reach sources, a driver that i have in kharkiv haven't responded in days. i go by i hope he sees the messages on what's app but it's impossible to really grapple with that that there are parts of the country that are completely closed off so i don't have anything new on the mayor. as far as what i've seen, yeah, i just want to reiterate what was said. these attacks are not on military infrastructure. in the early days of the war, any kind of violence taking place near urban areas is going to bleed into civilian populations. you know,

i want to check in now with jack crosby. msnbc news contributor and reporter for the rolling stones. threatening a bomb shelter in ukraine. jack, tell us more about where exactly you are and recap about hala's night went for. you i know you had some traumatic tense moments over the last several hours. >> yes. sorry. i just made it back up to my room. i'm sort of in between getting notified about this call. so we were woken up at around 8:30 this morning, i think. therefore, a fire alarm in the hotel. i think it was just the alarm system that they're using to evacuate everyone to the bomb shelter below. i am in ukraine at the moment. so far, the fighting has not reached in the way of ground forces. but there have been areas here where the city is so very much on edge. there are sirens multiple times a day. yesterday afternoon, yesterday after morning from the city of kharkiv ukraine which is the side of some of the fiercest findings right now as the russian forces tend to take that city and hit drastically escalated in the cam

jack crosbie is still with us on set.t we are the former ambassador taylor calling for something in between. explain. >> right. so a military no-fly zone require it is military to take out any potential plane or artillery that might target military aircraft so ahead of the no-fly zone they have to take the targets out. that is why it's pretty much almost like going head to head with the russians right away but a humanitarian no-fly zone is different. if the russians agree to a cease-fire in a corridor there needs to be a way to enforce it. the way the russianing fight is dirty and in syria to use the corridors to actually attack civilians when they flee. so we could in theory try with the russians to get them to agree to allow enforcement of the corridors. if they agree we would not take an action until or unless the russians did something to strike at the civilians who are being protected. >> ellen, you are skilled enough as policy to explain it the way i understand it but what is the likelihood that someone like vladimi

joining me now is "rolling stone" correspondent and contributor jack crosbie.wing escape from kharkiv. what was traveling inside ukraine like overall? what are they up against? >> thank you so much again for having me. you know, traveling across this country changed since the war began. i spent plenty of time in ukraine previously in 2015 and did many trips there. used to be really accessible. high-speed trains went across a lot of the country. sleeper cars to take. roads and highways at least along major routes pretty good and just a drastically different picture now. hundreds of thousands, millions of people trying to make the way across the country. and what struck me is just the uncertainty of every possible form of transportation right now. train routes are disrupted and inconsistent and just absolutely jam packed with people. the roads are plagued by extreme traffic. traffic jams for miles at checkpoints and everywhere you go there's uncertainty both the physical saferty and what you find on the road next and only thing getting people through this is ever

i want to bring in rolling stone correspondent nbc news correspondent, jack crosby. he was in kharkiv when the attacks began in kharkiv. and his latest piece, he describes the harrowing journey for refugees who are trying to escape this devastating war. jack, it is great to have you back here, safely new york. tell us what it is really like there, what we are not seeing in these photos and videos that are horrible for us, but when you are really, there when you are traveling, explained to us. >> so i think the thing that sticks with me and sticks with a lot of people is just the sheer uncertainty that people are faced with as they travel across the country. i wrote about in this piece, you used to be a very accessible country to travel across. there are a lot of ways to travel from point a to point b. they had family members spread out across the country. and now every step of this journey is played confusion and indecision and fear in a lot of places and people don't really know if they are going from a dangerous situation to one that can be even worse or what they a

joining me now from ukraine is "rolling stone" correspondent and msnbc contributor, jack crosby in a city southwest of keefe and whitney shef ty in kyiv. you were visiting a maternity ward of a children's hospital, tell me which one it was, what do they need right now? look at those images. what do those moms and babies need right now? what do the doctors and nurses need right now? >> reporter: it was a maternity ward. and i think from what we understand there, they're doing okay in terms of supplies. as you can see, they go into the bunker at night, around 6:00 p.m., they're all told to move from their rooms and get underground, in case there's any kind of shelling or attacks nearby. they stay in the hallways because there's not a lot of room down there. the babies are in like a cafeteria. so -- i know that the staff is very, very tired. so a lot of the staff is living there with them. one of the doctors said that her husband is staying there as well. they're working all hours that they can and sleeping in the offices or in the bunker with everyone else. it's certainly trying for th
