in the meantime, trey yingst joins us. he has lived in the capital city. , we heard explosions today, yesterday for you, smoke plumes in the distance. how close can you assess is the russian army tonight? >> yeah, bill, the current estimates are the russians are about 15 miles from the city center of kyiv. the front line moves every hour, and ukrainian forces are doing their best to push back this russian offensive. remember, to the northwest of the city is the end of that convoy. nearly 40 miles long, the russian tanks and artillery units, the officials believe will attempt to surround at least in part this capital city. in the southern part of ukraine, as you noted, in mariupol, we are seeing a significant play by russian forces to try to cut off the city of nearly 400,000 people and ultimately take it over. if they are successful in these efforts, it will give them a critical land bridge where they can move in forces and equipment from crimea, and also it will connect them to the eastern part of separatist held areas where they have been backing forces t

." ♪ ♪ howard: first, let's go live to ukraine where fox news correspondent trey yingst joins us fromrey, what's the latest? >> reporter: howard, while a fierce ukrainian resistance continues today, ukrainian forces and civilians are getting hit from the ground and air by russian troops. some devastating images coming out of irpin just outside of kyiv. we were there yesterday watching thousands of civilians try to get out of the way of russian fire. today we can report three people were killed, civilians on their way out of that town as russian forces fired mortar shells at different positions. this is what we are seeing not only in the capital of kyiv, but across this country. the russians continuing their campaign against civilian infrastructure, trying to push out civilians and move in their forces. ukrainian president solid myrrh zelenskyy today doubling down on his request for the international community to immediately implement a no-fly zone over ukraine to give his forces a better chance at pushing back this invasion. we see in the streets of kyiv today checkpoints set up throu

foreign correspondent trey yingst live in kyiv. good evening, trey. >> martha, good afternoon. the ukrainian capitol of kyiv continues to brace for a russian advance on this city. over the past 24 hours, we've seen air defense systems active here. air raid sirens going off and explosions in the distance. the war is getting closer and closer to this population center of nearly three million people. people here are bracing. the mayor of kyiv said half of the residents have left since the war began. staying in the city is president zelensky. >> you can still save yourselves if you go home. don't believe your commanders that say you have a chance in ukraine. you're taking our lives and will pay with yours. >> keeping in mind, the thousands of people killed amid the war. ukraine officials detailed the infrastructure damage caused by the russian invasion so far. the top economic adviser in kyiv said there's a hundred billion in damage to roads and other infrastructure. president zelensky talked about the human toll. >> they want us to feel like animals because they did this to our ci

i reported there, trey yingst, has been documenting the carnage happening on the outskirts of kyiv as the sounds of artillery are drawing closer and closer to the capital city. that's where we begin tonight, what can you tell us tonight? >> laura, that's exactly right. the ukrainians tonight say they shot down two russian airplanes. in the distance throughout this night we have heard significant artillery fire and shells landing closer with inside the city limits. this is important because we've seen the destruction across the rest of this country. in the second largest city in ukraine, apartment billings and residential areas just totally destroyed by these russian shelves and the air campaign that is moving forward as this invasion continues. these are not military targets. these are civilian areas and they continue to be hit today. you talk about just outside of the ukrainian capital of kyiv, the location that we were at on saturday. we watched as thousands of people fled the area as russian forces tried to work their way closer to the capital. well, on sunday, a russian shell slam

first to trey yingst on the president of two different countries. we've got ukraine and the united states. neither quite hearing what the the other probably wanted. trey? >> neil, good afternoon. we have a disturbing update to start with show with here from the southern ukrainian city of mariupol where officials say that a theater was targeted with a russian air strike. in this theater as recently as yesterday, there were hundreds of people sheltering from the russian attack on the city. officials there say they don't have an up dated number on casualties at this point, but it shows that russian forces are targeting civilian areas. this comes as russian troops advance on keep. they're targeting residential buildings here inside the city limits. early this morning two people were injured when a 12-story apartment complex was hit with a russian shell. workers evacuated 37 people from this area. according to a statement released by emergency services. russia tries to attack from the air. officials say their military has launched a number of counter off

foreign correspondent trey yingst is live from kyiv with the latest. trey?> >> jesse, good evening. there is a real sense here in ukraine that the worse is yet to come. we see the skyline behind me very dark in certain places because officials here are telling residents keep your lights off. and if you can stay under ground. it's why so many civilians tonight are living in the metro system of kyiv. they are worried about a continued russian air campaign. we have heard sigh lens throughout the day. small arms fire in the distance and these satellite images, extremely concerning showing a large convoy stretching for more than 17 miles of russian troops and trucks. they are preparing according to u.s. defense officials to target an encircle this city. we do know over the weekend at least two civilians were killed here in the capital after a russian missile slammed into a residential building earlier this evening. we heard russian missile hit complex out of the city limits. >> all of this significant because have you that vulnerable civilian population here that

trey yingst joins us live with the latest on the ground. trey. >> give, good -- griff, good afternoon. we've heard some of the loudest shelling since this war began, it's been taking place for about the past 4 hours -- 24 hours. these explosions not only coming from shelling, but also the anti-aircraft batteries firing off as ukrainians look to shoot the russian planes that are overhead out of the sky. the civilian population here still trying to flee for safety, and there are volunteers from all over the world gathered here in ukraine to end -- help them do so. we met one american this weekend, his name is dwight crowe, and he traveled to irpin just outside of the capital city limits to try to help these people getting out of harm's way. his words give you an underline on what people willing to risk amid this conflict. take a listen. >> just doing it not even that, i'm mostly carrying stretchers helping civilian and wounded evacuation. there's a lot of really incredible ukrainian volunteers that are leading the charge and putting themself

trey yingst is live on the ground in kyiv with more. saw these pictures yesterday and they are just devastating. what can you tell us? >> reporter: maria, good morning. we have a tragic update about this hospital. officials in mariupol say three people were killed including one child at the maternity hospital that was targeted yesterday by russian forces. 17 others injured. ukrainian president zelenskyy calling this act a war crime. you can see from the video there is indeed evidence they that a war crime was committed. women and children inside of a hospital when it was targeted by a russian strike. the deputy mayor of mariupol detailing other disturbing actions by the russians in the city. he says more than 1100 people have been killed so far with dozens buried in mass graves. ukrainian president zelenskyy had this to say. >> they want us to feel like animals. they block our cities, the biggest cities in ukraine and they've blocked because they don't want our people to get food and water. >> reporter: this comes as the ukrainians say

trey yingst is standing by in kyiv. but we're first going to go to mike tobin live in lviv.mike. >> reporter: and, arthel, these strikes, the most recent strikes in the western part of country was so far to the west, they were seen on the poll herbicide of the border. -- polish side of the border. the images were recorded inland -- in poland. the international peace keeping and security center has been used for years to train ukrainian forces. florida national guardsmen were there in february working with ukrainian forces, they left just before the invasion. it is only 60 miles from where paratroopers with the 82nd airborne are currently deployed. now, 35 if people were killed in this latest round of strikes, 145 injured. a lot of the injured taken to lviv, ukraine with, some of the severe cases taken elsewhere. ukrainians say the strikes were launched from ships in the sea of sea of azov. this is the third airstrike in the western part of ukraine in three days. arthel, back to you. arthel: mike, are you getting the sense that not only ukrainian forces, but those civilians w
