andrew schwartz, good to see you again. we were talking about what was then the snoiest december on record and then zilch. >> thank you for having me on jessica, it is the weather whiplash that we have been having that took us from amazing december and the driest periods we have ever seen. >> the amount of snow we did get. that's not going to get us out of this drought. we are nowhere near what we should have gotten. is there a chance to giver us enough of the situation we are in with this snowpack. >> the wonderful big december but since december we only had about 41 inches of snow and that's about 19% of what we would expect. so, we are quite far down as far as what we would hope to gain and it is not look like we are going to be making that up with these snowfalls. >> we saw the wildfire burned in the sierra from one side to the other. we saw a lot of ski lodges burning, we saw it right there in the ski area. is this something that could realistically going forward and impacting the sierras. >> absolutely. what's a littl

andrew schwartz. thank you for your time today. let's start by talking about this year's snow survey. how bad is it? >> it is not looking terribly hopeful, to be honest. we are 23% below average. and further, with these record temperatures we are seeing, we are looking at a snow melt completely within the next two or three weeks, unless we get a bump up in the form of note -- another snowstorm or two. >> i do not think it is in the forecast. is this an indicator of how things will go? >> well, unfortunately, that december through march. bama is where we get --. bama is where we get rain and snow. it is really not looking that we are going to be able to make up the difference unless we change drastically. the short term forecast is not looking too great. anchor: was there anything you were most surprised by or alarmed by? >> i think just the absolutely crazy weather whiplash we have seen recently. we had the second largest october here on record. and the deepest december on record here at the snow lab going back to 1970. yet, we had

earlier today, i spoke with andrew schwartz from the uc berkeley central sierra snow lab. about what this april storm means. the driest three months in the sierra in a century. so what do you make of this? april storm? we're seeing up there right now. you know, it's just more of the same. we've seen this type of weather whiplash occurring all winter long. uh wrap second deepest october on record almost nothing in november biggest december on record a record dry season after that, and now we're into april and we're trying to get big snow again. so at this point, it's just par for the course. we have seen the figures we know that california remains deep in drought, but with the storm that we've had the last couple of days, and with more on the way, do we see any sort of sizable impact to those numbers? it will be an impact. i'm not quite sure that it will be a sizable impact at this point. so much of our snowpack has already melted off that the likelihood that it's going to exist much longer is pretty low with that being said every bit of precipitation that we can get right

stod with andrew schwartz. he's the manager of uc berkeley's central sierra snow lab.received 14 inches of snow and expects another 1 to 2 ft of snow to fall. he says. this storm is indeed cause for celebration. historically it's actually not all that rare for us to get snow in april and even may. but what makes this current storm so special is just how dry the beginning of the year has been. and now that we're getting away from that, you know, we had basically the driest start to a year that january through march period that california has ever seen, so it's so great to be seeing this know how significant is this in terms of combating the drought, every drop of water that comes out of the sky. whether it be as rain or snow flake is incredibly important to help us with our water resources. it is and so these bigger storms later in the spring, are incredibly helpful for at least easing some of the pressure of the drought. um and helping with our forest fire danger. how much snow are we? are we seeing from this latest storm? we already have about 14 inches of snow as the
