robertson standing by live for us in brussels. nic, the symbolism of visiting kyiv is important, anything else, any substance to come of this? >> reporter: michelg a donor conference the 5th of may, the world bank involved, sweden and poland along with the eu. he said they would be putting it together. so important financial assistance he said that would continue to flow to ukraine for humanitarian, the military component continuing to flow. he said it's important ukraine can continue to pay its government services, government employees in the days and weeks ahead but also committed to helping rebuild ukraine. zelenskyy, interestingly, said nothing on the horizon at the moment in terms of any peace negotiations with russia. he said there were 120,000 civilians still trapped in mariupol, a much bigger number than we've heard, but the ukrainian president putting that out there saying essentially they're in danger at the moment from russian forces. and another interesting point from zelenskyy, very interesting in the context most leaders that come to visit him or he talks to virtually, he berates them over not providing enough weapons or dragging

robertson joins us in brussels. what else do we know about this call between putin and the president of the european council? >> yeah, blunt and direct is how charles michel is categorizing the call with putin. it was 90 minutes long. the reason the european council president wanted to have this call that he said was so that he could punch through any potential vacuum of information around president putin. of course, michelle has just been to kyiv and he has witnessed what he's called atrocities, war crimes. said that the people responsible should be held to account. he was telling president putin just the responsibility for the deaths that lie with president putin. that putin should stop the war, that the eu sanctions were going to continue as long as the war and russia's troops -- as long as the war goes on and russia's troops remain in ukraine. so from the european council president's perspective, this was a necessary message to deal directly with president putin after everything he's witnessed. >> but help us better understand the rationale of continuing to have these calls. at least if you're putin because he certainly doesn't seem open to a change o
