what you see behind me right there is a marsh fire smoldering in a marsh in pittsburg for days now. it sparked an air quality advisory. you can see why. all that just kind of low smoke hovering over a lot of parts of contra costa county. today though, a fix is finally under way. crews are working to flood that entire area, flood it with water. it's a drastic step. a more traditional firefight isn't working. peer suratos is in pittsburg to show us why. >> reporter: contra costa county officials got the green light to go ahead and flood the areas impacted by the marsh fire. i want to show you the fire that will water that will be used for the flooding. it will get pumped out and whip around right here and go over to the western side of the marsh fire with the hope it will finally extinguish the fire that has been burning more than six weeks. they decided to use this option because of that stubborn peat material that has been hard to extinguish. depending on its effectiveness, they'll decide how long they want to flood the area. the ultimate goal is to extinguish this fire that's been

the nearby marsh fire has left contra costa county under a cloud of smoke for weeks. there are signs of hope. air quality is starting to improve slowly. >> it's been really bad recently until today. today was a marked improvement. >> reporter: the improvement is likely linked to the decision last friday to flood the site of the long smoldering fire. it is a tactic that requires patients and a whole lot of water. >> the difference is obviously we have a lot lighter smoke out here. there is still some smoke production, but we have to remember that we are trying to flood 200 acres worth of property. >> reporter: steve oberg with contra costa fire says it's the only way maybe to put it out because it is mostly in peat, a spongy substance found below the surface. they have added three additional pumps in hopes of speeding up the process. >> each of these are able to produce 2,000 gallons per minute. they are going almost nonstop. we are introducing as much water as we can on to the property. >> reporter: he also noted the ongoing drought conditions isn't helping the proces
