thank you tonight, cal fire battling what it calls an explosive wildfire in the sierra foothills. the so called oak fire is burning out of control tonight in mariposa county, near the community of mid pounds. this fire started around two this afternoon. officially it's at 1600 acres and growing, but some estimate that number is already much higher. people in that area were forced to leave their homes immediately. mandatory evacuation orders are now in effect for thousands of people living in mid pines, jersey, dale and other towns along highway 1 40. cal fire says it's likely that some buildings have already burned in this fire, but a spokesman we talked to tonight couldn't confirm any specific numbers. fires throwing embers out considerable distance starting new spot fires. um has been difficult for firefighters. those can be challenging when the fires throw out those embers ahead of the main fire. so uh, it's just been pretty extreme fire behavior and our crews are out there working diligently to try to get this fire wrapped up even individuals that are watching in the barrier.
