let's bring in garfield reynolds to put it all together for us. garfield, if bond bulls were doubting looking at the inflation in china last week that they had room to run, certainly the data and also the orientation from policymakers suggest that this bond rally in china has room to go -- grow. garfield: definitely. it could be potentially at the global benefit between inflation and growth. it has been concerning, inflation too high, growth is likely to be too low. and the difficulty for policymakers around the globe in china's policymakers have been no different, is how to balance those issues. you have that strong inflation data which seemed to reinforce the messaging coming out of the authorities that they weren't looking to stimulate more because they were concerned about the potential fallout that over stimulating the economy might have. you come forward just a week or so and they've cut interest rates, they are talking about other stimulus measures, the supports to support some real estate developers, what they did with the weekly daily fix

garfield: well, there is a strong chance that sort of move keeps going. swati was mentioning that rates traders are still expecting rate hikes every meeting. however, much like what is going on with the fed, the expectation is that those rate hikes will slow down. there's 175 points still priced in by the end of the year, so that is seven 25 basis point hikes, two 50 basis point hikes, and then after that, 25 basis point hikes. 3% would be a full half-point about what rba governor lowe cited as being the long-term neutral rate would be aiming for, so already restrictive. so once you are getting towards that territory, then you are increasing the chances of a slowdown, or even that they pause to see how that goes. given the global outlook, also given some of the pressures on the rba -- don't forget, there is this review going on, there has been concerned about whether it mishandled the post-pandemic period by staying too loose, too long, and confusing investors, economists, and households about what the rba was doing when they had said they would be holdin

kathleen: garfield, thank you so very much. garfield reynolds there.move on to china's covid restrictions, eating into industrial profits which fell more than 1% in the first seven months of the year. for more, let's bring in stephen engle from hong kong. we're seeing the chinese slowdown reflected in the bottom line. stephen: i think so. the industrial profits number we got over the weekend is the evidence of the waning confidence in the growth prospects in china. the latest quarterly survey of economists from bloomberg -- surveyed by bloomberg indicates the rest of this year for the full year 2022, the consensus estimate for growth is 3.5%, down from the previous survey of 3.9%. that is indicative of all the headwinds the chinese economy faces. you mentioned a couple of them. nobody zero is the big one but also the property crisis and also at least temporarily those power shortages down in the south, which by the way, the government has indicated it has been alleviated a bit to business and industrial clients. we will talk about that more later. but

garfield: we do. there was a lot of concerning news in the recent few days and also a big fill up for the dollar, a sudden and surprising switch to stimulus, and headlines in a pboc-backed paper and china today saying they need more stimulus. that is pushing up against the yuan. the yuan is a fairly strong trading partner for the u.s. despite the tensions. also china has an effect on the us trillion dollar and new zealand dollar so that improves sentiment -- on the australian dollar and new zealand dollar so that improves sentiment for the u.s. leveraged funds have gone short the dollar after being long so long. if they are off on that call, that could turnaround and fire up the dollar for its next big run higher, given they would get forced out of those positions they have just taken and that is often when those positions can be the most vulnerable. you don't have any profits to lean on. shery: the strength does not bode well for oil prices. we saw them under pressure today as well. su: yeah, what we

let's bring in contributor garfield reynolds. what are we seeing? volatility was not hefty in the last trading session. garfield: we need to take the last couple sessions with a grain of salt or 10 given the volumes. what governor orr was saying now is keep. the aussie bank has been ahead of the pack on rate hikes. he said a couple hikes then we can watch and be more data-dependent. that is the undercurrent for risk assets. going into jackson hole part of the reason why they may not be as offensive as you think they would be is even if powell is hawkish, even if the match is what bullard and other extreme hawks have been saying, the key is the strong expectation that the faster the fed and other central banks hike now, the faster they get to the endpoint, or at least, the risk point. so fewer hogs going forward is what equities -- fewer hikes going forward is what equities and bonds are looking for. that helps explain relative calm in the face of strong expectation for a hawkish towel and hawkish comments -- hawkish jerome powell and hawkish comment

garfield: i don't know about a melt up, given equities in the u.s. modest in their rebound. but this was very much a relief for a lot of investors who had been reading the tea leaves and saying, inflation has peaked, it is going to come down, that does mean that the fed, it is still expected to hike rates in september, but the pace of hikes have to slow in the coming few months. that is one of the difficulties when trying to parse what the fed is going to take away through inflation and what markets are to take away. because the fed is very focused on what we are going to do in the next meeting, the next couple of meetings, if they think they still need to hike. they don't want to let the cat out of the back. they might be thinking privately, this is nice and we might be able to call a halt to rate hikes sooner than we otherwise would have to and therefore, we would be more likely to avoid a recession. but they can't say that because if they say that, they encourage consumers to spend more, they put fuel back on the fire through their rhetoric when t

garfield, we have been tracking the twos intends right now. with the expectation of a slowdown ahead, we are closing with a -50. there is some slowdown happening had come wise the fed not paying attention? >> one, the fed is very focused, as kathleen was saying on current inflation rates. another sign for them is what is going on with jobless and job additions in particular. both of those indicators tend to be lagging indicators. they are a bit backward looking. both have -- showing sudden turnarounds, that in retrospect it not occur until after conditions became seriously worse are in the economy. the market prides itself on being forward-looking, the money that investors spent today they hope we worth more in six months or a year from now. the difference in the perceptions going on, that is a big part. the fed has, jay powell has focused on this shorter term yield curve. the current three month bill rate versus the expected in 18 months, that is becoming flatter, not anywhere close to inverting. that is very much short-term, it will be about

kathleen: bloomberg's garfield reynolds. the china leadership conference will begin on october 16, bringing president xi jinping to an unprecedented third term. stephen engle is following this story for us as always. drumroll. this is a big moment. stephen: it's the worst kept secret. the top of the agenda is an anointment for a third consecutive term. in 2018, he was able to change the constitution and abolish the term limits so he will be able to be potentially a leader in perpetuity. again, this is a highly choreographed national congress that is held every five years. the jockeying is behind the scene. that will last about a week behind closed doors. about 2300 communist party officials will gather and essentially be horsetrading and jockeying for positions will probably already be dealt with in the previous week, and at the end of the long week, xi jinping will walk out on the right carpet followed by six other standing committee members and ranking order. that is where it will be very interesting. at least two members
