our senior national correspondent terry moran is back with us with more. p took with him when he left the presidency back in 2020. there are a lot of them, and some of them are among the most highly classified secrets in the u.s. government. this morning, "the new york times" is reporting that more than 300 classified documents have been retrieved from donald trump's mar-a-lago residence. including documents from the cia, national security agency and fbi on a variety of topics of national security interests. concern over those 300 documents triggered the criminal investigation still in its early stages, probing whether trump and his aides may have mishandled material, refused to turn it over or even lied about it. since last year the national archives has been seeking documents trump took when he departed the white house. under u.s. law they remain government property. "the times" is reporting that trump himself went through those boxes in late 2021 and resisted calls to turn over what was at mar-a-lago telling advisers, "they're mine." but they're not his.

our senior national correspondent terry moran has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this morning we're learning a lot more about the months of difficult negotiations between donald trump and the national archives over those classified materials. this letter sent by the head of the archives to trump in may shows -- opens a window on how much classified material trump had and how hard it was to get it back from him. it refers to over 100 documents with classification markings comprising more than 700 pages. some include the highest levels of classification including special access programs. now, that security designation refers to the most sensitive materials in the government's possession, restricted access for those with a need to know. trump had turned over some material back in january. and in june, "the new york times" reporting that mr. trump looked through the boxes himself before turning them over. but even after that, trump still had not returned all that was needed by the government and now he's looking for a
