tropical storm watches for jamaica and hurricane watches for the cayman islands. the reason for the difference is we anticipate this storm is going to strengthen into a category 1 hurricane by the time it crosses over the cayman islands, likely late sunday or early monday morning. then it will further strengthen up to likely a category 2 by the time it makes its way to cuba. the main reason is all of this very warm water, these sea surface temperatures are in the mid-to-upper 80s in that region. it's also not just the surface. even as you start to go down tens of feet, that ocean heat content is also extremely warm. that's that fuel that that storm will need to intensify over the next several days. once it gets into the gulf of mexico hitting again a lot of that very warm air and also, too, you are looking at very llow sheer, there suspect much sheer in the area. we do anticipate that storm will become a major hurricane as it enters the eastern gulf of mexico. as of right now anywhere from apalachicola to key west is a possibility for landfall. we will keep a clos

this is the cayman islands. you can seat the pin wheel effect starting to see the eye. they're going to get hit very hard, with very high seas, and of course the storm surge. now, back to our track, and what we're thinking, the warnings have now been issued and watches to the north. this is a very important, notice in pink here, from tampa southward, that's a hurricane watch. it is not to the south of there from fort myers southward where we have tropical storm warnings, so this is telling us, national hurricane center and the computer models speculating in the watch area in the near future, we will have hurricane conditions. the track moves right over western cuba, sparsely populated. typically when the systems move over land mass, they break down, lose strength. we do not expect that to happen. if it drops 5 to 10 miles per hour, nothing, because it quickly goes to category 3, and then we have a category 4 storm on our system, on our radar here. this is the big thing i want everyone to realize. when you notice a cat 4 well off the coast, and even though there may be s

hurricane warnings have been prompted across the cayman islands and parts of cuba because the system what it takes to not only become a hurricane but potentially rapidly intensify. this is the warmest body of water across the atlantic, warmest region so we know the system will be fueled rather quickly across this region. notice 9 to 14 foot storm surge the forecast around western cuba. catastrophic storm surge, parts of southwest florida initial forecasts have storm surge threat as high as 7 feet across that region. here we go with the timing, we think landfall sometime in the early morning hours of tuesday around western cuba as a category 2, because of the very little land interaction on tuesday morning we expect this to quickly intensify back up to a category 3 and possibly even to a category 4 from tuesday into wednesday. of course, any time you get to this scale, a major hurricane. we know the population density quite high across portions of western florida and this system is forecast to parallel the coast which is really the worst case scenario because the impacts across the st

it is expected to strengthen to a hurricane today before passing the cayman islands and cuba ahead. we've been waiting for the crucial 5:00 a.m. update from the national hurricane center, what are they saying? >> essentially there hasn't been any change in the current strength of the storm or projected path. the more immediate threats are becoming clearer and clearer. with that 5:00 a.m. update the national hurricane center explicitly calling for the potential of storm surge of between 9 to 14 feet above normally dry ground over western portions of cuba. that's the more immediate threat. 50 mile per hour sustained winds around the tropical storm ian, it's becoming a little bit more spiral, do you see that banding taking place? still trouble finding the center of circulation. we currently have hurricane hunters flying and sampling the environment in and around the storm and that will be absolutely critical. this at this moment is a game of miles because any shift to the west where they find that center or a shift to the east has long-term cascading impacts on where the storm eventual
