>> there is a fascinating debate playing out in the latino community.e abortion issue has decidedly moved latino women back into the democratic column. what you see play out in the rio grande valleyor example and through the southwest is republicans doubling down on rep -- on border issue. it seems to be working in texas but not as much as in arizona. you have other states that are not border states like nevada. the data is mixed. not just between the parties but on the issues. the complication of how we are approaching the vote in different states as part of this american story unfolding in a unique way. reporter: on the issue of abortion as well as gun policy, democrats are favored by latino voters. a recent poll found 63% of latinos opposed the decision to overturn roe v. wade. could that decision outweigh the concerns regarding the economy? >> there is conventional wisdom that latinos are more socially conservative on something like abortion. i don't think there is evidence of that. if you ask an abortion question 1000 different ways, you will get 1

compared to non-latino whites. we bring it? >> i think there's two points we need to understand in talking about this. the first one is that the wage gap is explained by the youth. when you have a dramatically younger youth cohort than an older one, your going to make less money. you're starting your career as opposed to the middle or end of your career. so the income disparity is part of that. the other part is that historically, we have been at the lower end of high-paying kinds of jobs. but that is now changing. it is dramatically changing because the most increasing educational attainment cohort in the united states is the latino cohort. above all others. so it's in motion. that's really the point of this study. even though we're starting lower, even though we're younger, it's creating more wealth now as reflected in gdp than any other cohort. >> so very quickly, tell me about latitude this weekend. >> latitude is a business event. not the same people, not the same talk. we're talking about 21st century america

with latino specifically?y, you can't have moral values -- understanding that god -- your rights come from god and got only, right? tying those things into -- >> that's a dangerous thing to say, your rights come from god and gotten only. what do you mean by that? >> absolutely not, i would rather say that my rights come from got and government, government can take away my rights, and in the constitution we have unalienable rights that come from our creator, being that we have the opportunity of life, liberty in the pursuit of happiness, that comes from you understanding that there is a moral conscious. for latinos that means believing that our rights come from god, not government. i think congresswoman maya flores is able to make that a political campaign. >> i talk to the congresswoman, she even said that she would support the united states becoming a christian nationalists country, those are her words. do you support something like that? >> 100%. 100%. >> the republicans we talk to you in the rio grande vall

we didn't lose the latino vote. we didn't win by much.rned out. 63% of black voters. the latino was 54%. part of the challenge is mobilization. it's finding your voters, identifying them and making sure they cast ballots. >> and in states like florida, which nathan and i were just discussing in the break, and in south texas, democrats have not been competing there aggressively or trying to do aggressive outreach which are different than live in arizona, than live in nevada. so they focus way more in arizona and nevada. a lot of democratic latino strategists will tell you the party is often late to the game in terms of how close it gets down to the election and that's why nevada was closer than people expected. >> it should be a priority in day one not just a surge for voters. just look, nathan, at the change, percentage change, the number of latino voters since 2016 arizona was up. michigan up 123%. wisconsin down a little bit. the michigan number, you look at that, wow, it's still just 3%, 3.3% of the population. again, you talk about th

thousands of latino voters.a tactic by democrats, that they have relied on for years. this is rodriguez. he is the founder of the outreach group that advocates for the -- in just three years. the organization was pushing many latin republican candidates like mayra flores, across the finish lines. part of the success? mobilizing churches. >> can you tell me a little bit more about the faith assembly team. how did you bring this? >> in 2019, we realize that to better engage and mobilize latino voters. and to expose the message of conservative policy. the best way to do that was through the churches. because, eight out of ten times, if a latino is being outreach through the church. more than likely they believe some of the conservative platforms. so it's very much easier for them to get out and vote republican. >> the congresswoman started and ended her campaign in a church. how effective was that? >> the most effective. she was able to bring that message out of texas, and say more no more church lockdowns. no more

the latino vote, for me, somewhat of a frustration, so often we talk about the potential of the latinoe, as a sleeping giant, and i think that latinos are finally waking up and coming into their own, they are not homogeneous, that everybody votes the same way, and supports immigration, that everybody's on the same page when it comes to abortion and that everybody's conservative or a new york liberal, people need to understand that when they think of the latino vote. >> i want to talk about that, the polling show that democrats have strong support from latino voters losing ground, 56% said they would be more likely to vote for a democratic candidate, a slight drop from 2020, poli, 38 for trump, why do you think the shift with latino voters is happening and should democrats be worried, i think the polling might be for latinos. and a bit different than what it is showing. i think there are more latinos coming to the surface. >> i disagree and running into the hands and arms of republicans is completely overblown, we had issues in 2020, places like miami-dade and the rio grande valley, no

so latino has become a more visible conversation. and really honing in on what do we mean when we are using these terms. >> so what's changed? first, social media, where a wave of young creators are sharing their journeys. >> i started posting. i look asian, but i'm mexican. you have to deal with it. >> reporter: secondly, language. the share of u.s.-born hispanics who speak spanish at home has declined by 10% in the last four decades with second and third generations less likely to encourage their children to speak the language. a trend a comedian who is half white and a half hispanic has seen in his own life. >> my family would speak spanglish. so i think that it's starting to become more of a normal thing. >> reporter: whether it's hispanic or latino, the flavor is reaching everyone. >> this is the chicken? >> the chicken is to die for. >> it shouldn't be surprising to everyone. everyone is interracial. >> it's time people caught on. >> it's been time people caught on. >> the data has been fascinating. there are two other interest

what i should've said about the latino vote, the biggest increase in evangelical is within the latinomunity. they are going from catholicism to a much more conservative evangelical -- these white denominations are very welcoming to the latino communities and those evangelical churches. that is why you are seeing a bigger portion of latinos voting republican. >> religiosity is very much a factor in the republican primaries. how often you attend a church, whether you are whites, evangelical christian, i would venture to say if i recall correctly, to say there wasn't a lick of difference between the vote trump god -- got in 2016 from a 2020. your question is, do you think we will see a diminution of that type of religiosity is a go forward? hard to say. we don't look at it from that standpoint. we look at it -- there are so many stereotypes of religion. one of the things we found in the wall street journal poll, not to go back to abortion, people are led to believe that catholics are homogeneous in their attitudes about abortion. they are not. in fact, catholics are more liberal on certa

and those same conservative latinos and latinos that voted for him in florida, could turn away from himi guess, do you share that sense of it? he is facing two lawsuits and a criminal investigation out of texas. do you think we will actually see the governor and folks who participated in this political stunt, including vertol systems, inc., actually held accountable? >> you know, we have that same saying in minnesota. i want to focus on latinos for a moment. uh, latinos are the future. latinos are the fastest growing demographic in the workforce. we contributed 33 force of the labor. horse expansion. um we contributed 2.7 trillion to the gdp. um we have 1.9 trillion purchasing power, which is expected to be 2.5 trillion in two years. um and even looking at california, the population here. uh when we look at the school system k through 12 public schools, 54% are latinos only makes sense to make that investment. and are you finding that more corporations are wanting to make that investment? well i say why's corporations are wanting to make that investment because they're recognizing, you know, latinos are our future employees. they are our future clients and customers, vendors and suppliers . we need to make this investment and we want to be seen as an employer of choice. uh that really appeals to the latino community. if you want to retain your latino staff invest in them so that the next organization that comes knocking on the door. for throwing a little bit more mo

and latinos was about 19.l right a book for 17, 16-year-olds. in fact, i ended up writing the book for ten year olds, the median age for latinas and latinas is 11. that means, in order for us to understand the future of democracy, we need to be talking to and about and with latinos and latinas. so, for me, i call myself a democracy junkie. i feel that way because i wasn't born in this country and i became a citizen. that is why i take this so seriously and that is what i hope other kids will learn to do by reading the book. >> can i ask you really quickly, do you feel the media is making progress with the issue of representation that you want young children to read this book to feel that they still have the space and place in the american media landscape? >> yes. i, mean there's progress. i am on with you. i'm talking about this book. i wrote the book. it's been out there. it is making its way into the world. the problem is that overwhelmingly, when i talk to young people, and i'm still a professor, so i'm in
