we got a look at inside pg&e's emergency operation center. that is where all the outages are tracked. the biggest issue, those blown transformers. >> we have people at the ready to go out there and respond if our quitman overheats. if it fails, we have people who are ready to go out there and get the power going as soon as we can. >> joining us now is damien where it is probably upper 90s are low 100s. damien, what is the problem here? you spoke with the pg&e officials , why are we having a problem with our equipment? other parts of the state, places like fresno, they don't seem to have the problems that we have here. >> reporter: here's what happened today, everyone has seem to have gotten home from work and turned on the ac, cranked everything up. that kind of overwhelm the grid. that caused a system failure in their own neighborhood fresno, for instance, bakersfield, does not have the similar problems with the loan transformers. i am told that they are billed differently. they are built to withstand consecutive days of excessive heat like

now a visit to pg e's website. we'll tell you if your home could be included in one of those rotating outages. there's a lot of information there. you can also enter your address. >> or the address of a relative or even your kids school to get more information pg. and e's online tool allows you to plug in your address. >> and see if you could be impacted by a rotating outage. while many will be more than 50% of pg and e's customers are listed in what's called block 50 and they likely will not be included in rotating outage because they share a circuit with the hospital or another essential facility. but rotating outages should not be your only concern because this intense heat can cause unplanned outages, all its own. >> transformers will heat up during the day and generally overnight they have a chance to cool down and when it's so hot that the weather does not cool down enough for these machines to to have a chance to cool down that to lead to a quitman failure. and that's when we'll see power outages due to heat

but about half of pg e customers are in areas. we're told that won't be affected because there under that label zone 50 and they are deemed essential places like hospitals. so if you live around one, chances are the electricity will stay on at this time. these rotating outages have not started. so we will let you guys know. once that happens, there's another web page. i want to draw your attention to. let's turn things over to another pg and e resource. this one is a map of the bay area and they highlighted to indicate which customers have already had their power cut off. but for different reasons. so instead of turning off electricity to lessen the stress on the power grid and have that planned, these customers ended up losing their power, most likely due to some heat related issues and a significant number of customers. that's more than 5,000 are in these areas with a red triangle down in the south bay. so hopefully they have another way to keep cool. tonight. and we're going to be looking at these outages that have not happened

we got an update from pg&e about power outages. they told us in the north bay today that it has not been as bad with power outages compared to the other parts of the bay area. as of right now, according to pg&e, there are 1700 across the three counties who are without power. ama: thank you so much. dan: in the east bay, making the call to change to a minimum day schedule for the rest of the week because of the heat. students are done with school around noon and step 3:00 p.m.. in the south bay, pg&e has brought in extra personnel to respond to unplanned power outages because by broken and overstrained equipment. this command center is watching disruptions to the south bay energy grid. personnel from everywhere in california have been brought in as extra staff. extra equipment is ready to go. pg&e says the extreme heat is putting a major strain on its infrastructure. >> we know that heat can affect not only the grid at the large-scale level, but individual pieces of equipment that become overloaded and can fail. dan: she's talking a

nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live outside the south bay emergency operations center for pg&e. how is it looking out there, damian? >> opportunities may be rempted to others. >> reporter: this team is tasked with tracking and responding to power outages in the south bay. on days like this, no power can be a life-threatening situation. there were 38 outages by noon. and after days of unrelenting heat, pg&e expects those numbers to climb by tonight. >> we have people at the ready to go out there to respond. if our equipment overheats, if it fails, we have folks that are ready to go out there and get the power going as soon as we can. >> reporter: crews are being brought into the bay area from all over, including the central valley. pg&e says the transformers in that region are built for continuous days of excessive heat, unlike the transformers here. so areas like press know don't see as many transformer blowouts as cities that are closer to the coast, even though they tend to have more hot days. what do you think about all this heat? >> unbearable. >> reporter: fred carpenter an

here's a map from the pg e outage map. many outages around the bay area, particularly in the south bay, area's are highlighted in red, orange, yellow and green. red is the most intense. that means more than 5,000 customers without power. and you can see here this is the area around the intersection of highway 101, and tully road in east san jose. a number of neighborhoods there without power. and if we had a little bit south of that, you go down highway one on one tour, morgan hill, you'll see there's a wide area around morgan hill and san martine on both sides of highway 101, big neighborhoods without power. not as densely packed a san jose. so not as many customers affected but a broad swath of morgan hill and san martine without power right now. well, yesterday's extreme heat put a record-breaking strain on the state's energy grid. it prompted an energy emergency alert 3 by cal iso. but a breakdown in communication is led to some finger pointing for power outages in some bay area cities. >> kron four's haaziq madyun has

>> reporter: yes, with this incoming heatwave, it means all hands are on deck for pg&e. and i got a chance to speak to a spokesperson who said that some power outages may not be a result of any planned power shutoff. pg&e crews are getting ready for the long days ahead as the hot weather sets the stage for possible widespread outages across the bay area. >> they'll be working around the clock. staffing levels will be high. like i said, you will see blue trucks out in the field if there are outages, because we'll be working around the clock. >> reporter: pg&e emphasizing the increase in staffing to handle any weather-related issues. she says staff meteorologists will also be closely tracking weather through the weekend at the utility's command center in san ramon. specialized equipment there allows them to see which areas are most impacted by the heat and make decisions on where to send crews based on that information. and when it comes to outages in the coming days, she says it's more likely to be due to overheating equipment than any planned power shutoff. >> when it's

police were out directing traffic while pg&e crews tried to fix those blown transformers. it's expected to be a long and uncomfortably warm night for a lot of families across the bay area, and a busy night for the pg&e crews. nbc bay area's damian trujillo joins us from pg&e san jose emergency operations center with how they're dealing with this crisis. >> well, their full gear right now, raj behind me. this is where the big trucks come and go to make repairs up and down the santa clara valley here. right now there is a slight lull. but they're coming and going all day long for the past few hours. inside the operation center, crews are tracking those outages and waiting for more. crews spent the day loading up the trucks with new transformers and heading out to bring power back to customers. the utility has called in crews from across the western region, including the central valley. pg&e says the transformers in that area are built for continuous days of excessive heat, unlike the transformers here. so areas like fresno don't see as many blowouts as cities that are closer

and we immediately brought that to pg&e's attention. >> reporter: pg&e told us by phone the unprecedented heatwave is to blame. there were three separate outages wednesday due to an underground cable failing at a substation. the other nights equipment like transformers failed due to days and nights of constant heat. the utility says it now has a team of engineers reviewing the morgan hill energy system to see what can be done to prevent this from happening again. >> there needs to be some upgrades to the infrastructure here in morgan hill. we can tell that, and that's what we've been demanding from pg&e. >> reporter: residents are just hoping the lights and ac stays on tonight. >> it really sucks for anyone here in morgan hill. it's been i feel like kind of unfair. >> reporter: ian cull, nbc bay area news. >>> a member of the white house is visiting oakland today to check out the city's progress on rebuilding some of its transportation systems. last year, president biden signed a trillion infrastructure bill which earmarked $14 million for oakland. now the city is working on a project cal

we're going to show you the pg and e power map. it is showing the current these are because of problems including heat related equipment failures. they are not related to rotating power outages. you can see the different areas highlighted in red, orange, yellow and green green. the fewest number of red, the highest number of people who customers who have lost power. and this comes as the utility company pg notified its customers that more than 525,000 customers could have their power. >> shut off tonight. if cal iso orders rotating outages, this would come after cal iso declares a level 3 emergency right now we are at level 2 and hopefully we don't get to level 3 but a spare the air alert we should tell you about. this has been extended now through tomorrow. we've had one of these every day, the bay area, air quality management district saying the combination of the heat and car exhaust will be producing high levels of smog. they're urging people to limit driving to reduce air pollution to walk bike or take public transit instead.

now here are the latest numbers from pg knees. update at eight pm the standout is the south bay 46,000 customers without power. another 3200 in the east bay with scattered outages elsewhere, and the dangerous heat also created sweltering conditions in the town of danville. temperatures there hit 111, as a large part of that community did deal with a temporary power outage. ktvu zack. those picks up our live team coverage from danville. is it a nice evening? cool down out there zakariyah still pretty warm. certainly cooled down a bit, but certainly some issues. this town is still facing right now. pg largely able to resolve that outage you mentioned earlier but now dealing with another outage across town affecting some 2200 customers. all this, of course, creating a major headache for a number of area businesses, including danville brewing here, which temporarily had to shut its doors earlier in the afternoon, and the situation certainly no better for a number of area homeowners. a mad dash to the danville library and safe to say ,

this is a pg&e rotating outage alert. it says saying the state's electric grid operator has issued a notice that rotating outages may be required today if the demand for electricity exceeds supply and this emergency alert went out on phones yesterday millions of california's being asked to conserve energy that reminders seem to work the online energy grid showed a drop in demand right after it was sent out people reminded to turn off their lights not use their appliances and today governor newsome called that alert a game changer. 27 million of those text messages went out. and within 45 minutes saw roughly 2600 megawatt reduction and uses that not happened. we would have had some episodic load reduction. that was extraordinary. the governor said they threw out the playbook for this heat event. that's because this one exceeded their worst-case scenarios, and that's also because it lasted for about a week for the whole entire state. karina let's talk a little bit about the future. what is the plan for trying to prevent sit

i checked with the pg&e website.re 3,300 customers in the downtown area and robertson park area that are still without power. as you can see, businesses along this street, no lights are on. the traffic lights are off. it's causing a problem here because people are having to deal with a four-way stop instead of the red, green, and yellow that they're used to. these power outages in livermore and throughout the bay area, by the way, are not the result of rolling blackouts. it was so hot yesterday that the equipment failed. but today, there is a possibility of rolling blackouts if we do not conserve as much electricity as we dead. that's the warning from cal iso and pg&e. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> around the bay area there are more cooling centers opening. one at campbell community center, all seven public libraries. in mountainview the community center there. it's roomy. cam ben community center, venetia public library, also in the south bay, free ride to some of those cooling centers again today
