the city of san francisco says they're not commenting on the lawsuit for now, but the city attorney says they are focused on expanding temporary shelter and providing more permanent housing options. mayor breed's office says the city has added about 3,000 per minute permanent supportive housing units since 2020. but the attorney representing the homeless people says their efforts are minimal. take a listen. >> when they say they've offered unhoused people services to help them get back on their feet. we see in 3 years of actually hindering people's progress, destroying their property and criminalizing that. so i think it's fair to say that is not accurate depiction of what san francisco is done as a portable housing. so sad still way behind its state targets behind its own targets, its thousands of units short. >> the lawsuit filed on behalf of the homeless says that they like to see the sea spend more money on building affordable housing. the lawsuit estimate san francisco. we need to build nearly 6700 new affordable housing units and that would probably cost 4.8 billion dollars to hous

san francisco rising. a special guest today. >> i am chris and you are watching san francisco rising. focused on rebuilding and reimagining our city. our guest is the director of financial justice in the san francisco office of treasure to talk about how the city has taken a national lead in this effort and how the program is comlishing the goals. welcome to the show. >> thanks so much for having me. >> thank you for being here. can we start by talking about the financial justice project in a broad sense. when did the initiative start and what is the intent? >> sure. it launched in 2016. since then we take a hard look at fines, fees, tickets, financial penalties hitting people with low incomes and especially people of color really hard. it is our job to assess and reform these fines and fees. >> do you have any comments for people financially stressed? >> yes. the financial justice project was started in response pop community outcry about the heavy toll of fines and fees. when people struggling face an unexpected penalty beyond ability to pay they face a bigger punishment than originally intended. a spiral of consequences set in.

candidates who also are in favor of gun control legislation. >> san francisco supervisors say they're planning to use some of the 100 million dollars is cityan opioid lawsuits to fund what they call san francisco recovers. city supervisors say this will be a three-pronged approach to address drug overdose crises, incentivizing and supporting those with substance use disorders to seek recovery, ending street level using and dealing and having city departments analyze resources and obstacles to progress. if the resolution is approved, city departments have 90 days to report back on their findings. the board will discuss evidence-based solutions. some suggested solutions include expanding housing access to those who are recovering from addiction confiscating illegal drugs that are being used on the street. >> still ahead tonight at 8, a mother accuses a local district attorney of a coverup. now the state attorney general is stepping in. >> new phones, new watches, new features. see the highlights from today's big apple event in cupertino and another bay area county now reporting a case of bird flu. we will tell you where right after the break
