a mean streak that a lot of political figures, including glenn youngkin, are feeding. that is a symptom of the broader problem that we face as a country. there is not any more an expectation of basic civility in moments like this where we can take a step back and say we're going to put the politics to the side and insist on people acting in a certain way. i think right now so many political figures, especially the most ambitious ones, they know that the republican base wants a certain agree of what they consider to be toughness, but i think that that is contributing to the coarsening of our politics and this isn't about, you know, policy differences at the end of the day, john. we are not talking about whether you want more taxes or fewer taxes. a lot of these people are motivated by unhinged lies. so the unwillingness of political figures to call that out is extraordinary. >> our thanks to all of you tonight. >>> we continue to wait for the update from the san francisco police chief. stay with us for that. also ahead, president obama is on the campaign trail for the f

it gave an issue to his republican opponent glenn youngkin who eventually won a relatively narrow election at 51% stop they can still matter but it's more in the coverage of what is said. unfortunately, people cannot take hours and hours to watch all of the debates. you have a lot of debates on c-span i wish i could wash just watch more than i do. they are important but they are less important in the sense that partisan identification is more important. i often say the two most powerful letters in english language are d and r because they determine a large majority of the votes. people vote their partisan ids. when you scratch the surface and look at their voting history, you find that they almost always vote republican or the democrat in the partisan identification enables them to interpret all the issues through this partisan screen and that's ok. parties serve many functions. let's not pretend that everybody sitting there objectively analyzing every word that's said in a debate for every event that occurs in the campaign trail. host: will you be watching john federman and men met oz in

that's a very bad trajectory. >> and glenn youngkin is like a book banner. i don't even know if he's a good republican. on that point, the great steve kornacki, when we sit and talk about sort of what's going to happen, he's the guy who sort of explains the mechanics of these things. california is a slow counting state. so we literally might go into election night not knowing who is going to, for instance, control the house, because there are so many congressional seats in california. let's say they take a long time to count them. you could think one thing on election night about who's going to control the senate. let's say it looks like the republicans are going to assume control, and two weeks later, when california finishes counting all its ballots, the democrats control the house. there's nothing illegal or nefarious about that, because that's just actually the time it takes to count votes. but you have a whole slate in arizona, a whole slate of them, who are all running as election deniers together as a ticket. you have people like masters, and you have
