we'll start off with steve harrigan in north port. >> jacqui, the water in north port is going up and they're struggling to make rescues. a waiting list of 500 people, calling 911 they're trapped by the water and want to get out we've seen national guard, and private citizens, too, trying to help people. you can see the houses one after the other have become little islands about chest high, four or five feet height of water around some of these houses. first responders are joined by a lot of people who are bringing their air boats and private boats to help out and more aid from different parts of the state because some of the first responders have been going at it hard for several days and electricity still out for more than one million people. some of the buildings damaged so bad that you simply can't flip a switch and turn the electricity back on. jacqui, back to you. jacqui: all right, quite the scene there where you are, steve harrigan live for us, thank you so much, steve. we'll check with you later. griff: and hurricane ian leaving parts of the coastline battered. molly line is

flooding also shutting down some of i-75 near north port. that's where this traffic you're seeing now was seen last night. rachel: our next guest is part of the christian relief organization, which is already deployed teams ready to help with ian's aftermath. edward graham is the vice president of operations for samaritans first and son of franklin graham and joins us now. you have sufficient an amazing organization -- such an amazing organization, edward, and you do so much for so many. what's going on right now? what is your team facing as they attempt to help the people of florida at this moment? >> thank you, rachel. the team got in there really about two days ago, and they were assessing, got our trucks down there to based here out of north carolina, and they've already set up in two churches. we always work through the local church with the volunteer teams and set up in engelwood florida and fort meyers. this is kind of the epicenter and we're seeing complete destruction of homes. they were flooded out, horrible roof and wind damage an

and houses only accessible with things like kayak and this shows you why 40% of people here in north portealing with power outages and hard for them to get in and fix the power lines because the roads are inaccessible. that's why we've seen people repeatedly returning for help. we were at a distocontribution center and video shows -- distribution center and people need water, power and ice. we're looking at $63 billion in damaged here in florida, liz. liz: it's very upsetting and very, very worry some. madison, thank you. there is we want to get you pieces of good news here. recovery is a long way to go, significant progress has been made at this hour in restoring power to florida homes and now we're told 5% of the state is still without electricity and utility companies from all over the country, many of which don't even serve the florida area sped down to help with recovery efforts following ian. since the storm hit, 1.8 million customers have had their electricity restored. one of the companies that rushed down to help, pse g based out of newark, new jersey, sent 48 contractors down so

this is the scene in north port, which is in sarasota county. state officials say the latest known death is that of a 62-year-old woman also from that county. she apparently drowned after getting trapped in her vehicle. take a look at the massive amount of water people risked traveling through today east of sarasota. they're in their car. this is a car, not a boat, makes its way down a very flooded state highway. sheriff's deputies and firefighters went door to door in the community of hidden river warning people about a potentially levee beach. on cape coral, they are checking on victims who may need urgent help. fire rescue say they have been collecting people and pets and taking them to a fire station where helicopters are ferrying people to safety. this afternoon, governor ron desantis said while more than half of those who lost power now have it back, several counties in southwest florida are still struggling. >> as of right now, you got about 73% of lee county without power and 77% of charlotte county without power. the county that has the

i was just in north port and i don't know if it's going to require a rebuild, but there's still floodinges that they would need to go to be to reconnect some of the power lines. it needs to be safe for them to do it. some of that i think is a little bit dependent on the circumstances. but i will say, if you are in an area where they tell you that they have to structurally rebuild rather than restore, then you would -- you should expect longer outages. if it's just a restoration, that's something that's on an easier timetable than if you have to rebuild everything. now there's infrastructure that goes into this. we've asked all the utilities to work together. some municipal co-op needs a part and they don't have, yes want fpl and these others to help. they said they would. we think that's good. we also announced yesterday a public request for lee county's electrical cooperative to accept mutual aid from other electrical utilities to get it going quicker because right now fpl has about 50% of their lee customers restored. the lee county electrical only that has 3%. it's our view that if yo

first steve hardball gone, live on florida's gulf coast in north port where crews are working away trying to get away from the ruble and destruction. >> the airboat just pulled in. big fan allows boats to take little bit of water in shaw low. here comes another one in. a lot of these are privately-owned boats. people use them to fish or go out in everglades and using them to help neighbors. we see people pull in with luggage and pets as well. the real urgency was yesterday, that's when there were life-saving emergencies. they were being pulled out rapidly. the face has slowed little bit today. more people who have been stranded by the water, that water that came up 3 or 4 feet overnight and finally just beginning to recede but there's still a lot of work ahead. several hundred people really just waiting here on list to get rescued by either national guard or by a neighbor with an airboat, a kayak, canoe. eric: neighbors helping neighbors, steve, thank you, arthel. arthel: in south carolina the cleanup there is just beginning. ian was down to category 1 hurricane when it made landfall yest

we're getting reports of overwhelming numbers of 911 calls because of flooding in the community of north port. that's south of sarasota county there. meanwhile, we're at a food and water distribution center, aid efforts are ongoing. this one is being run by the cajun navy, a group of men and women who go out and they make rescues with their personal watercraft and right now trying to help the folks here. but they say there's simply not enough food and water to give out to people. this line of cars, well, it stretches down the street. i counted at least 50 to 100 vehicles in this line, a tough situation for a lot of folks and making things worse, we have a closure along i-75. that's a mileage artery in western florida. and this closure is because of flooding along the myakka river that causes delays in both directions along i-75. even though the storm has passed, runoff is making its way into rivers and water ways and that's causing the flooding. that flooding causing issues in sarasota county where the shelter in place warning was issues after concerns that a levee could break. while many are
