people need to know -- >> nbc's ron allen is in new york city. susan del percio on set and msnbc political analyst and we love talking new york politics. this race has been consistently tightening in a state where we should say it's become even increasingly blue. it's more than two to one registered democrats here. is crime the main reason zeldin has been able to make it closer? what do you see at play here? >> it should be about a 20-point race right now. in the last couple of years, any other cycle, that's what we would see. we came off 2021 in a mayoral race that was all about crime. eric adams fighting crime, being a former cop, that's what really rallied people all across the political spectrum to him. there's never been a mayor that had that kind of support going into their first year of office. this is a combination, though. i look to the nassau county suburbs of new york to get a better idea, which was economy and crime. that was the 2021 message that led to a sweep in nassau county. let's not forget the top of the ticket rode in on the c

joining me onset is ron allen. also jesse mckinley. this redistricting in new york, the backfiring of the math has made a lot of races a lot tougher and i'm particularly interested and not just patrick malone, but what's happening with kathy hochul and lee zeldin? they're debating tonight. it's surprising to a lot of folks that blue, blue, blue new york might not be so blue in the governor's mansion. >> this is the first time she's running for the job outright. she's never won a state election for governor. so there's a lot of attention focused on how will she affect the down ballot races. there's a debate tonight. zeldin clambering for one, finally got it. it's only an hour and is going to be broadcast on a cable network. not a broadcast one. >> new york one. >> exactly. for zeldin, it's his opportunity to introduce himself to new yorkers. he's been underdog throughout. there have been recent polls that put the race as close as four points if you believe that poll. he's been doing it by hammering away at crime. he has press conference

ron allen has late details. >> is this relief for you? >> reporter: tonight a jury taking just over an hour to decide oscar winning actor kevin spacey was not liable in the sexual assault and battery case against fellow actor anthony rapp for an incident rapp claims occurred back in 1986 when he was 14 years old. spacey, who was 26 at the time, saying nothing leaving court. how are you feeling? rapp, now the star of "star trek discovery" claims spacey forced himself on the then teenager in the bedroom of spacey's apartment during a party rapp, who said he felt inspired to go public in the early days of the me too movement, testified the alleged encounter was the most traumatic single event of his life, describing it as incredibly frightening and very alarming. but spacey in emotional testimony insisted nothing ever happened his attorney presented pictures and a floor plan showing spacey lived in a studio apartment at the time. this falsely alleged abuse was at a party that didn't happen in a room that didn't exist, spacey's attorneys told
