matt mehan is in the lead with 52% of the vote to cindy chavez 48. ktvu is lamonica peters has been tracking both campaigns. she joins us now live in san jose with what they're saying lamonica. that's right. i'm here at the headquarters for cindy chavez, where she spoke to us about an hour ago and said that she would not be coming back out tonight to speak to her supporters because the race was just too close to call. the last we checked santa clara county's website. there was a difference of about 5000 votes between the two with as you mentioned matt mayhem, pulling out slightly above her, but that could change as the votes continue to come in, but earlier today, we did hear from chavez and she talked about coalition building that she had done in her long history of service here in san jose, and how grateful she was to the people who had voted for her. we also stopped by matt may hands watch party earlier today, and he talked about his grassroots campaign. you know, he's pretty new to politics here in san jose. he is a city council person, but he do

cindy chavez has 20 years experience. matt mayhem was just elected to san jose city council a couple of years ago. regardless of what happens, regardless of what happens, they are going to have to continue to work together. cindy chavez will be a santa clara county supervisor if she doesn't when the waste -- race. one of the questions i asked matt mayhem tonight was, how would the collaboration look moving forward regardless of the outcome? >> after elections, elected officials have responsibilities to come together, try to understand what the electorate was telling them, and working together to solve problems. i'm committed to focusing on the solutions that we need. reporter: you heard him say right there, he's focused on working to collaborate, focused on the solutions. that's what both sides are saying. it remains to be seen who the official winner will be. the registrar's office says this is the race they will be counting for a long time. they will continue that count tomorrow. we will continue to monitor what goes on

santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez. she's one of the 2 people running for san jose mayor kron four's. justin campbell is live at her headquarters tonight with more house ago. yeah, can basically in excitement is building here at the campaign headquarters here in willow, glen. but there is still work for them to do there in the back. there's about 25 to 30 people that are making calls. they're still reaching out to people, potential voters before. >> those polls close. so i did get the chance last week friday to speak to both candidates. kind of a sit-down speaking to matt mahan and cindy chavez about some of the issues that they would like to address here in the city. what is the number one issue i spoke to cindy chavez. he told me the number one issue for her would be addressing public safety. we know the police department, the san jose police department has a lack of officers that are there that they've routinely talk about and she would like to improve the response time for 9-1-1, calls by getting more officers. and

cindy chavez has 66,728. the total votes right now are 138,000 more than that 138,000 votes, but the registrar's office tells me they have a lot of votes a lot of ballots in the back that are still yet to be counted in this very tight race between two very different candidates. we spend some time back there this morning take a look. the polls closed at eight tuesday, but the counting process in santa clara county is far from over the ballots keep piling in we were there just as around 2,000 volt by mail ballots were brought in from the us postal service filling up a portion of this warehouse things are going pretty fast. we have a lot of ballots to process because a lot of vote by mail ballots that got dropped off at the vote centers all the mail coming from the post office. we're expecting a lot of vote by mail ballots coming from them and then all of the people that voted at the vote center, it was a really high amount of people that went in and voted in person yesterday many of those ballots adding to the
