want to get right nbc steve patterson who's right there for us there. steve, walk us through it. what more do we now? what is the feeling right now they're on the ground? >> yasmin, i think as we often run into these things. the numbers change so very rapidly. we know the number of injured has been bumped up from 18 to 25 still five dead. but that death toll perhaps could increase as we get more briefings about the day. we know police investigators processing the scene interviewing witnesses, doing the work or trying to figure out how and why this happened. meanwhile, that leaves the community picking up pieces. we've heard from the president. we heard from the governor. we heard from the mayor. we heard from several community members about just the abject shock in horror and then probably the sorrow to follow us all of this comes in. one of them is standing right next to me, doctor michael roberts travis. you are a grief counselor but also a pastor. you know this community. what that club amin to the lgbtq community -- what does it mean when you heard what had happened? >> it's

joining us now with this is antonia hylton, steve patterson in phoenix, joining us at the big board isacki and, of course, we have to start with you, antonia. you've been following the georgia senate race. what can we expect to see from the candidates? >> reporter: both candidates are hitting the road again. they have just over three weeks right now to make all sorts of voter contacts again and not just reach the people who already cast a vote for them, but especially on the side of herschel walker to reach people who didn't cast their vote for him the first time. the democrats here are feeling confident in this current environment because what we saw in the results coming out of tuesday was that republican herschel walker underperformed republican governor kemp across the state here. he trailed the governor by 2,000 votes. while there's a question of enthusiasm now that the senate control question has been settled, both candidates need to make sure that their base is fired up and aware that this runoff is happening on december 6th. but early voting is starting just after thanksgiving.

joining us steve patterson in phoenix, and priscilla thompson in atlanta. teve, arizona has just been -- i mean, mark kelly won another senate term, but maricopa county still is counting votes and they have not yet determined who's going to be the governor. >> yeah, six days later, we're still counting votes here in arizona, but we have to be down to the wire because there's only a certain amount of ballots left to be counted, only about 160,000 left in the state, less than that here in maricopa where the lion's share and what will determine this race for governor, less now than 100,000 total. there's about 26,000 votes between hobbs and lake with hobbs in the lead. and while lake is cutting into that lead certainly, the last few days of returns have been in favor of lake, analysts say it's simply not enough. she's not hitting specific targets that she really kneads to hit to stay relevant the , to stay neck in neck in this race. yesterday it would have been 55%, she was below that, which puts a lot of pressure on her for tonight. when we get a fresh batch f

i want to bring in steve patterson who is there for us in colorado springs and lisa rubin. e, we're getting a lot of new details about the suspect behind the attack. >> reporter: yeah, much more after yesterday's advisory hearing. the suspect read their constitutional rights, visibly battered on a video link we saw after some heroics inside club q helping subdue the suspect, not leading to any further death. we know the suspect being held without bond until what is likely going to be a december 6th court case. that suspect scheduled to appear in person facing what are now preliminary charges, what are expected to be formal charges in the way of five counts of first-degree murder. also, learning much more on the suspected shooter's background. the fact that now we believe this was a ghost gun, the weapon used inside the club. no serial number. the fact that there was a filing before the hearing that we had yesterday. the defense team describing their client as nonbinary, using they/them pronouns which is pertinent to the fact that there could be hate crime charges in this cas

i want to bring in steve patterson who is on the ground there for us in colorado springs.rning, there's a lot of new information on the alleged suspect. what have you learned? >> reporter: yeah, past, present and future we're learning a lot more about the suspected shooter. let's start with the present and future, that hearing. really an advisory hearing meant to provide context for the suspect, making sure that they're competent enough to understand the justice process, the rights and the charges against them. of course, you know, i think the most that we learned was visual. seeing the suspect's face for the first time battered, beaten and bruised. he was slumped over. of course, the club patrons taking action inside club q, doing everything they could to stop the suspected shooter. meanwhile, much more about the past as well. obviously before that hearing there was a filing from the defense attorneys that labeled the suspect, you know, nonbinary, using they/them pronouns. this does not gel with a lot of the reporting that we've been hearing on the ground, including our o

steve patterson is in colorado springs for us tonight. the community, what are they telling you? >> this is an unmitigated tragedy. it's something that we all is a country know over and over again. to have this happen, particularly for this community in colorado, the horror is unfathomable. i think that they will move on from this, talked to people that are organizing vigils getting people together and making sure that the community is talking about this. that's important for the healing process. for right now, we are still in that initial shock. right now, i don't want to delay this right now. i have somebody that was inside at the time of the shooting. michael anderson, a bartender. tell me what you experienced right before the shooting happened. what was last night like before that shooting? >> last night was a very fun, energetic night, high energy, we had a great drag show from 9:00 to 11. everybody was having a good time. we come here to have community, to have a safe place to gather, to drink together, to tears together, to have a g

steve patterson is live right now from colorado springs to give us more. we know that the fbi is assisting in the investigation. what else can you tell folks at home about this investigation. and what's happening right now on the ground? >> first, starting off another day of abject or in this country. unfortunately, one as you so well laid out, it's all too familiar especially at an lgbtq nightclub here in this country. meanwhile, police before you can even process the pain you need to process that scene. you need to figure out what happened. that's what's going on as we speak. police still sorting through that scene. we know they recovered at least two weapons, one of them a long gun that police believe was used in that shooting shortly before midnight last night. the shooter moving through that nightclub as you laid out, five dad, now 25 injured. it's an upgrade from the 18 that we heard just a few hours before. police scheduled another briefing in the next few hours. that number may change. although the number of dead has stayed solid. meanwhile, we've

steve patterson is covering the race. orker" and founder of country over party and msnbc political contributor and analyst. steve, when will we know who won the governor's race? >> reporter: chris, the shortest, most nonconfrontational answer is this week. today, tomorrow. there's not a lot of ballots left. 160,000 left to be in the state. a dump of 100,000 last night. less than 100,000 in maricopa county where the lion's share will take place. we are close. the more complicated, longer answer is it really depends on performance, specifically when it comes to the amount of votes between lake and hobbs. hobbs is in the lead by 26,000 votes. every day the returns have been in lake's favor. the last three days or so. the problem is analysts say that may not be enough. she isn't hitting key margins that would keep her neck and neck. the last few days she has been gaining but not at the thresholds. it puts pressure on her tonight. there are several other scenarios, f overperforms or makes it in this margin that would trigger an

joining me is nbc's julie tsirkin in colorado springs nbc's steve patterson. tell us about the victims? >> reporter: yeah, look, chris, today on thanksgiving it's all about the victims. six people all employees of his walmart lost their lives tuesday night when a gunman, overnight store manager opened fire killing them. three in the break room one trying to run out of the front of the store and two more that died in the hospital later on. all of these victims lost their lives, you see them on the screen, for no reason. ranging in age from 16 to 70. behind me this morning, a memorial. people coming here, members of the community to lay flowers in remembrance of the lives lost. i spoke to one woman who works in a walmart an hour away, worked there over 22 years. take a listen to what she told me and why she came here today. >> i opened up my phone and, like, all of a sudden something's going on. i see chesapeake, shooting going on. and i just don't believe it, that it happened this way. you know? and kind of surprised me and i thought, next day is thanksgiving.

steve patterson is in colorado springs with the latest for us. teve, i understand that you managed to speak to a bartender who is in the club when this shooting started. what did he tell you? >> yeah, that is exactly right eamonn. and i think in the next few days we are going to learn a whole lot more about the suspects, the victims of course, but right now, day one, it is all about the people who are inside that club that experienced this terrible ordeal. one of them, his name was michael anderson, a bartender. he was telling me that it was a normal night, there was a drag show, everybody was having fun and there are some dancing. and then those four shots rang, out and they almost sounded like part of the song so people did not first fully, which of course further led to the horror. unfortunately though, michael was -- fortunately i should say, michael was able to get some cover. he told me exactly how he got, there and how close he came to seeing that shooter face to face. listen to this. >> i had a coworker with me, and we were all just huddle

joining me from the maricopa county elections building in arizona is nbc's steve patterson, and in augusta, georgia, is antonia hylton. steve, let me start with this one. we got an update on the votes that are continuing to come in and looking at another release later on this evening. how are things on the ground there? >> yes, i mean well the problem is what steve just said at the big board, republicans votes coming in are republican party which would have been great two or three days ago for kari lake. the problem now is she needs a republican landslide tonight and we're expecting another batch, as steve mentioned, 90, 80,000, maybe close to 100,000 tonight. that will get us closer to who may win this race. we may be in a scenario in which we're able to call it. that is because, you know, there's about a 26,000 difference between hobbs and lake. hobbs in the lead. this county will determine the race, the lion share of the outstanding votes, and where the vast majority of the votes are going to come from and will determine the race. and the batches we've been seeing, again, favorable for

joining us now is steve patterson. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: you know, with 60,000 outstanding votes, 98% of the vote in, hobbs the projected winner, this shook out really in a few ways. first of all, kari lake just simply ran out of votes at the end of this thing. just you can taking to people on the ground, the expectation, the vibe was that she was running a very aggressive campaign. she expected to jump out to a big lead on election day. and that did not happen. and hobbs jumping out to a significant but slight lead. and so kari lake is telling her supporters that essentially you have to be worried about the election process to bring in your ballots, your mail-in ballots on election day, that there would be a flood of support every subsequent day. and every subsequent day we did see support for kari lake, but in cases where those votes had to come back as hooks, they came back as jabs. and as the exponentially compounds every day, those hooks then neededaymakers and they were still jabs until the knockout punch last night. and

steve patterson is covering this for us. what should we expect from prosecutors and the suspect today? >> reporter: that 22-year-old suspected shooter finally released from the hospital yesterday afternoon after being badly beaten by patrons inside the club, including what police call several acts of bravery that helped save lives. the shooter remanded to a county jail, expected to face the initial hearing in a few hours. this is basically an advisory hear on the preliminary charges which are five counts of first degree murder, of bias-motivated crime, which is counts of a hate crime. official charges not expected until next week when we have an arraignment. the shooter still something of an enigma. low social provide. a name change shortly before 2016, which makes things very difficult for investigators. on top of this, the defense attorney for this hearing listed the client as non-binary, using they, them pronouns, which would make the suspected shooter part of the lgbtq community. you conflate with reporting on the ground

steve patterson joins us. what did we learn from that court appearance? >> reporter: this is a hearing of a few minutes to inform the suspect of rights and the charges and make sure they are physically and mentally fit to be part of the justice process. mostly what we learned is visually, gels with the story and the account we heard inside that night club that this suspect was battered. that they were pummeled by patrons and club goers that police say did everything they could taking action to neutralize the shooter and no further death. the second piece which was in the court filing. the defense attorneys listing the client as nonbinary and completely contradictory to the reporting on the ground that a text miss and had he/him and bro. that has to be squared between now and december 6 with an in-person court hearing which will have formal charges. this community in abject mourning and sadness. i have been speaking to family members. a mother tells me that he is waiting almost in every room to walk through the door complete sadness and pain. we spoke to t

joining me from chesapeake, virginia, nbc's cal perry and in colorado springs, nbc's steve patterson.lk about the shooting at the walmart first, cal. we believe he was a manager. he had a pistol and multiple magazines, which i think was just confirmed by the authorities down there. what can you tell us about the details that we're learning today? >> so the pistol and the multiple magazines confirmed in just the last few minutes. the shooting took place at 10:12 p.m. local time, 45 minutes before this store closed. police arrived on the scene, they said two minutes later, two minutes after that, four minutes after the calls came in, they said they were able to breach the walmart. what they found inside were three dead individuals in what is the sort of employee room, the break room, including the gunman. so the gunman killing himself. they found a fourth victim dead by the entrance to the walmart, and then three individuals were able to be rushed to hospital, but unfortunately died of their wounds in the hospital. so a total of seven people dead including the shooter. at least four oth
