wilson walker caught up with some of the former workers today, who tell him it is not as discouraging as you might've thought. >> in the back of your mind you expected that it could happen, but it wasn't like, you know, it was pretty sudden, for sure. >> reporter: bart, as we will call him, would rather not reveal his identity, but until yesterday he worked for stripe, which has its u.s. headquarters in south san francisco. like a lot of tech companies, the online payment giant saw a boom during the pandemic. now it is cutting 14% of its staff. >> i think a lot of people over hired. i think was a big part of it. a lot of companies during covid over hired. >> this is a rebalancing i think that was coming, that we had in 2000 and i think that is going to happen periodically, yes. >> reporter: he is a professor at uc berkeley school of business and ceo of cambrian futures. he says the tech world is seen layoffs every 3 to 5 years, so that is not uncommon. what is different is the current macroeconomic landscape. there is geopolitical turmoil, inflation, and continuing talk of a looming r

wilson walker joins us now live with more on the vote count and really just how easily those numbers can change. wilson? >> reporter: we will certainly see no public appearances from either of those two leading candidates today. it was very quiet. that is because we did not hear anything from the registrar of voters today. oakland, like sentences go, not processing new numbers but the last numbers we heard were from 1:00 in the morning, so we are still pretty much where we left you last night but there is still a lot of work to be done. >> it looks like we are in for a long night. may be a long few days, until we get the final results of the votes that are being counted. but, right now, we are ahead. >> reporter: speaking very much like a candidate confident in the numbers, lauren taylor acknowledged it might take days to resolve oakland's race for mayor. that would be something the town has seen before. the first mayoral race to use ranked choice voting was a 2010 . that year, don parada held a 10 point lead on election night. >> this is probably the closest race for mayor in the cit

wilson walker has been following this race all along. he is live now to break down what all these numbers mean. take it away, wilson. >>> we have a much better understanding of the numbers, and we have some more numbers. i want to start with the latest batch of numbers we have for a first-place vote. we will get to ranked choice in a second. take a look at these numbers but if you joined us at 5:00 you would have seen me wondering out loud because we just saw, whether or not these were just new numbers, or the total numbers, new numbers plus we had after tuesday night, it turns out this is the total, it struck me as a small increase , but, this is the aggregate. this tells us two things. we have not added a lot of new votes. i think it is about 10,000 new votes added to the original 32 or so that we have. we have grown our boat pool, you know, by a third or something, but, the trend, which is maybe more important stays the same. in fact, lauren taylor's lead among first-place votes has crept up just a little bit. it is a fraction of a per
