so david goodman is the director of the child study center at the university of sydney in australia. he says, china's economic slowdown predates the pandemic. the issues are there not enough money? who's going to need to consumption? because that is not a basically, there's not enough welfare provision. so the p, everybody middle class working class, everybody has to say to ensure education for their children. house provision and old age provision. until the money government money essentially goes into funding those activities. people won't spend money on consumption low, spend it on those things. and as a result, the economy itself into a home has been over investment property over investment in infrastructure. and it's that kind of equation for economic growth is not there anymore. so there has to be something again that essentially way is why the government's introduce a policy common prosperity, not to create equality, but to create local level welfare provision. several people have been injured in an avalanche in a ski resort in northwest and austria. it happened in the village

so let's get more on this now with david goodman, his director of the china study center at the university of sydney in australia. david, good to have you with us. let's talk 1st about china's current policy. then i mean, those protests we just saw, an agent report forced the government to make a surprising you turn on its tough cobra restrictions. did the chinese government get its cobra policy wrong? i mean, when the whole world was opening up, learning to live with the virus, china stubbornly remained on a lockdown. it's hard to say they got it totally wrong. they were getting it right until the on the chrome virus very and got it. and then of course the, it's a game changer they had tried. i mean it's, it's not quite true that they only change the government, only changed its mind as a result of the protests, but actually cause the protests or events at the beginning of november when central government to local government to ease up on the restrictions. but that kind of relationship between central government and local government sometimes doesn't work very effectively and efficiently.
