we have the mayor of san jose california, the mayor of st. louis, parents--, the deputy director for group violence reduction strategies in the neighborhood safety and engagement in the city of baltimore maryland and we will have the general assembly guide of springfield, missouri and we thank you for your attendance here today. in this session we will highlight a few things, newly expanded funding opportunities from the department of justice to support our local efforts to reduce gun violence and brushes between the cities and forward to sharing some of the resources that we have in the office of just program of gun violence, i am really interested to see my fellow panelists about what they are testing out. gun violence is a top concern for the country just as the depf justice and from the standpoint of those not violent and those violent instances affect cities every day, this is more than a public safety problem, it is a public health crisis. we know that it is hard-hitting in underserved and marginalized communities. we are eager to work

this is not your mayor even if it is your black mayor.se are people, and is a what becomes challenging these programs. at least in my city at a think some of these others, we need people have been on the streets. perhaps recently have been on the streets who know what's going on, who at that age connection, who knew the hopelessness but to go when you thought they were going to die or go to prison. because what we are fun and really talk about is how do we get people to value themselves, their families, their associates, the committee? that is very challenging but importantly it's something we don't give up on. there's another thing that's important for all of us as mayors to say, because at a certain point the media isn't going to dos the work for us, right? i don't know what market you all from padilla to talk about our cities as dangerous. i know first duty is at the bows in addition to my but if you go to one of our cities and talk about these crimes they may put our face on the news or whatever neighborhood they're trying to bash. so

and then he becomes mayor.p with the black community. - i look at the vast change that's occurred in the african american community in new york city. i'm proud of that. - he makes a big show of never meeting with black political leaders. he would kind of rub it in their faces. - i used to joke that the thing about giuliani is, either you love him, or he hates you. - i think he had an aggressive stance towards anyone who questioned anything he did. - questions? - every day, giuliani would have a press conference. to his credit, he was always having press conferences. - the relationship between rudy and the press, from the start, is pretty negative. - will the office of the first lady be listed? - [chuckles] come on, good try. come on, guys. - giuliani had a very nasty attitude toward reporters. - you ask that question 'cause you're too young. this is déjà vu all over again. - the thing you have to remember about rudy is, he always felt that he was the smartest guy in the room. he actually enjoyed press conferenc

a lot of mayors. it's like being mayor of a country.ell you what my daughter went down to tulane university and said dad long story but when he was mayor i thought she was going to come home and talk funny at me. mayor pete you know he's the secretary and i still call him mayor pete. we have marty ross from boston. we have a lot of mayors. i think that's why we are making such progress. the fact is, we are here together today because you mayors know how to get things done. that's not hyperbole, that's a fact. yesterday i was in california where they are grappling with this and the governor looked to me and said we are the fourth in the world. tell you what i deflected and we moved on. i said that means you don't need the $10 billion i we just gave you right? all kidding aside he's a great governor and it went well. historic storms and flooding, when you are faced with crisis it is the mayor who gets the first call. i have seen it, i have traveled this country after floods, tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes. i was kidding but there was a

the first woman mayor and four mayor mclean, 156 years.f. and i'm sure, unfortunately, there are still cities acrossha america or in that 150 mark who still haven't had a woman mayor. ladies, we have lots of work to do. let's start by asking you all the question two of us understand how we're going to do that work. let me ask you, how can we continue to build up women in leadership? and what barriers to yours all t on your vantage point that hinder us, how do you overcome those challenges and barriers? i know there's a whole bunch of questions into one, and what changes of and women in politics and leadership will have you seen over the years? >> i want to be honest i've been mayor for a whopping four weeks. so i'm going to drop some knowledge on how you can do this. with that perspective, but i can talk a lot about being as a trial layer lawyer and having0 practiced law for 20 is in a court system which is a majority male dominated system. it is a really interesting thing to navigate. you are often the only woman in a federal courthouse.

francis suarez is the mayor of miami and head of u.s. conference of mayors. latoya cantrell is the mayor of new orleans. atlanta mayor, andre dickens along with john giles, the mayor of mesa, arizona. good morning to all of you and thank you so much for being here in person. i want to talk about just what is developing in terms of the shooting in california. nationwide, we are seeing this spike in violent crime. we're seeing reports of an uptick in anti-semitism and hate crimes. all of you are from states where there are fairly permissive gun laws. and i wonder, mayor suarez, how you put those pieces together. what is driving this? >> yeah, it's -- so many different factors are driving this. one of the things we focused a lot on on the mayoral conference we just ended is mental health. mental health is a huge component of what's driving a lot of these, when you look at the root cause and go back and sort of peel back the layers of the onion. mayors are very concerned about it. we also had a panel, obviously, our ban crime. certainly a lot of these mayors have

and appreciate the role that mayors play on the front lines in cities.was indicated, i served as mayor for five years of a small town in iowa. you are on the frontline of many issues in one of those is food security and nutrition security. as you know, last year white house sponsored a conference on food security and nutrition security where we talked about the importance of expanding access to healthy foods and choices. i'm here today to ask mayors to get engaged in this effort and even higher levels, and to give you several things you could do in your communities that would allow us the opportunity to expand access to healthy choices and foods especially for your children. first and foremost, we are in the process of expanding and significant modernizing our program that provides nutrition assistance to moms and infants and children under the age of six. the sad reality of this program, despite the important work that it does come is that nearly half of those who are eligible for the program do not participate in the program. we are calling on mayors a

>> mayor. >> tim keller, mayor of albuquerque. two quick points, we are suffering from the same things you mention. retention, we took all the money we were spending on recruiting and we pay officers to stay. so for what it's worth, $2000 a month in the city of albuquerque for them to stay an extra five years, that has helped our retention 100%. it's not the best, i would much rather recruit new folks, but if i get five more years out of a 20-year officer, i will take it. so something maybe to think about. a question for the panel, -- around alternative policing, albuquerque is way off the deep end, we have 100 social workers who take 911 calls 24/7. it has taken 20,000 calls out of our 911 queue away from the police department last year. about, -- but, as you scale these ideas, our problem with this kind of scale is actually around liability. we've got 911 operators who are afraid to refer calls to that department, we have a transport problem, these are civilians, social workers, they don't have the resources for that. so i would
