neil: but what did you make of the donald trump influence? rally around this guy? >> they are in their own cocoon. they have that little bubble there, the more they do this the more damage they do to the because they believe in. neil: if they don't follow advice from donald trump and are not getting it from the mainstream than what is going on? >> they should realize republicans in the house have a habit of getting rid of leaders they don't like, they pushed out newt gingrich, if they don't like somebody they have passed precedent to get rid of them so mccarthy raised $250 million, you may not like the guy but you work with him and let him perform and then get rid of him, you may not like aaron judge. everyone those but if he had 62 home runs you work with him. what they got to do is realize it is not just about them, little petty things, they've got a bigger thing, the united states of america. neil: this fourth vote is a no go for kevin mccarthy. the indications are we will have 1/5 vote, doing this again and again and again and we will see where it goes. for kevi

neil. we continue to hear this kind of talk, especially around political times. s you and i discussed in the past, what happens in california doesn't stay in california, become as blueprint, close to a blueprint, what other cities, states might try. you heard from a few guests in william's piece, what washington might try. where do you see this going? if someone has to pay for that. then there is the issue of who gets it. >> okay if you want to use an example in that package they talked about evanston. evanston has reparations on the books but it is not really reparations. you had to be a resident in evanston 1969 or before. it was about housing discrimination. so individuals in which may have suffered, not necessarily had to but there was apparently a lot of housing discrimination during that time, they're getting $25,000, not direct cash but for paydown on a mortgage, school, that kind of thing and only 120 people were able to apply because the individuals who qualified were in 70s, or 80s. some died waiting to receive these payments. again you can't count, you

>> i personally think it's too late because, neil, i think there's no way around the pain here. when you have all these people now getting laid off, to me, that's not a soft landing. neil: yeah. you know, because i can look at it, guys, and not to minimize layoffs, but we -- you know, a lot of these businesses were adding jobs. so we're not back to the point pre the adding of the job. so net-net they're still up jobs. so you could look at that and say these are cautionary steps that they're taking. now, they could go beyond this, and maybe in the case of goldman sachs when they laid off better than 3,000 people, i think the big deal there was the bonuses that came out afterwards, and they were fairly paltry. so they're hoping maybe a lot of those people quit. there could be more of that kind of thing, right? >> and, look -- yeah. and it's logical, what they're doing. wall street, there's no ipos, there's no more spacs. private equity's down, you immediate less people. crypto business, that's gone by the wayside in a very big way. the mortgage business, which took a big hit, guess

neil: how much, i know he looks at inflation data, pce, the stuff you guys gather around but does he look at corporate earnings? they are expected to be pretty poor. first time in years we're anticipating a decline year-over-year depending what survey you believe, anywhere from 4% hit to about half that. >> yeah. neil: does he look at that, if that materializes, he feels that this is working? >> so the fed doesn't technically look at corporate earnings but indirectly. if you look how the fed gathers information for policy making decisions, it goes out to business leaders and local areas, says what are you seeing in terms of price increases in your supply chain, in your wage basis? so seeing the pressure that is coming on corporate earnings is definitely something the fed gets the data on from the bottom up, from the grassroots. so it is definitely factoring into the perspective but not in terms of specific response to the earnings and earnings season we'll see coming up for the stock markets. neil: no matter what happens with earnings, let's focus on this next fed meeting, january 31
