and i was elected to the statehouse in my home county. ever, but we did, we got fair district lines, and it was a tight and tough race. i was the only house candidate who flipped. it was a lot of help, but it has made a huge difference here in michigan. >> michael? >> yes, that ballot proposal -- and there's 26 states now that can do ballot proposals, and i highly reck this to other states. this was led by a 20-something-year-old woman who just went on facebook and instagram one night and said -- she was just learning about gerrymandering. this doesn't seem fair. it went viral, her postings on facebook, and she and these other young people formed a group called voters, not politicians. they got almost half a million signatures, got it on the ballot. once the people of michigan had a chance to decide whether to outlaw gerrymandering and voter suppression, that's exactly what they did -- 61% voted to get rid of gerrymandering and a citizen's commission, nonpartisan, drew the map we had this election in. in this election, not only did we tak

this is the historic older part of the statehouse dating back to the revolutionary war. george washington walked through those doors, thomas jefferson walk through those doors. both were slaveowners. an incredible amount of maryland's racial history is contained within these four walls. just outside the doors log stood a statue honoring roger tani the chief justice, maryland native who wrote the dred scott decision. there was a plaque on the wall up until 2-3 years ago honoring confederate and union soldiers. including a confederate flag. frederick douglass was in this building as well, late 19th century and it was his bible that was used today. for some perspective on the importance of this occasion and the governmemtship we spoke to cheryl laird. cheryl: it is hard when you are embodying so much, so much history is racked up in who you are and what you're representing. i think one he is a signal of the future of american politics. he is a part of that co-hort of people of color who have come into power. people who came into office and opposed obama world. for hakeem je

he was the republican party's nominee for a statehouse seat in the elections this past november. he lost to the incumbent democrat but then refused to acknowledge the election results. he said it was rigged. mr. pena was arrested today, again in a s.w.a.t. raid. he was arrested in connection with a string of four shootings into the homes and offices of democratic politicians, including one case in which three bullets were fired into the bedroom of the 10-year-old daughter of one democratic state rep. the girl was asleep in her bedroom when those three shots were fired into her bedroom on january 3rd. tonight we received new statements from one of the democratic politicians who has had shots fired into his home in recent weeks. he's the incoming new mexico house of representatives speaker. his name is javier martinez and he tells us i deeply appreciate our albuquerque police department for their hard work throughout the investigation into these shootings targeting elected officials. i'm grateful a suspect is in custody. i trust our justice system will hold those responsible accoun

. >>> the man who lost an election for the new mexico statehouse now stands accused of orchestratingtic local officials. he's going to be making his first court appearance this afternoon. we are now learning more about the plot that police say they have uncovered by this man, solomon pena. josh campbell joins me now tracking the details. what more are you hearing. >> reporter: this former gop house candidate there in new mexico will be in court for his first appearance in a couple hours' time. the charges that he's facing, they include felony possession of a firearm, attempted battery. shooting at or from a motor vehicle as well as conspiracy. this all stems from accusations this former candidate conspired with four other people between december the 4th and january 3rd to target with gunfire the homes of four democratic officials there in new mexico. it is believed this is politically motivated, police say, possibly due to his attempt to prove that he actually won this election despite losing this election in a landslide. now, cnn attempted to reach out to pena for comment. the distr

we are seeing voter suppression laws continuing to be introduced and discussed in statehouses acrosss worth noting that republican elected officials who do not fully spew out lies but say, well, maybe the election was stolen or we should really investigate this conspiracy, they are part of the problem. they are part of the problem for not standing up and clearly stating facts and reassuring americans that our elections are safe and secure. >> colorado secretary of state jena griswold, thank you. and i'd add to that not just those that say maybe, i'd add those that say nothing. you have to say something. if you say nothing, you are in. have you heard, has there been any response to this case? >> lawmakers tend to not comment on issues when they are out of session, but we did see a glimpse of the issue against threats against lawmakers. the united states capitol police released the yearly numbers to those threats. and while the numbers did decrease from 2021 and 2020, capitol police say the numbers are just way too high. and we had a lot of discussion about this as we saw the hearings

charges that he orchestrated a spree of shootings targeting those homes, a state senator and new statehouse speaker, all democrats. no with an was hurt in the shootings, but that was apparently not for lack of trying. in the criminal complaint against pena, police provide the account of a confidential witness who participated in some of the shootings and is cooperating with authorities. this witness said pena didn't like that he men he hired to shoot the democratic official homes, that they were firing at the houses so late at night and they were aiming above the windows. pena wanted them to aim lower and commit the shootings earlier in the evening to have a better chance of hitting people inside. pena personally participated in the fourth and final shooting to ensure that it was carried out that way. it was during that shooting that county commissioners sleeping 10-year-old daughter was covered in sheet rock dust dislodged by bullets passing through her bed room. today the new mexico legislature opened its new session with a new house speaker whose home was riddled with bullets last month.
