the south bay and the east bay. around 6260,000 customers without power is just an enormous number in the bay area. the majority of folks. and we'll zoom in here in the south bay where close to 130,000 customers in the south bay, a loner in the dark tonight here, the areas hardest hit. this is a southwest san jose campbell cupertino, sunnyvale, south toes. you know, the right here means at least 5,000 customers are without at the orange is the second worst. that's 500 to 5,000 customers. so you can see the areas that are real trouble spots next. biggest problem areas would be the east bay where you have close to 70,000 customers without power. not too good in the pleasanton area, but even worse here. just east of pleasant hill, south of concord. you know, cejka so many people live in these densely populated neighborhoods and then there's this, the berkeley hills, the hills above albany, elsa you know, just crushed tonight by those outages and after the east bay, the peninsula is the next biggest problem area. more than 50,000 customers using flashligts tonight on the peninsula of millbrae here, san

we begin with the rain in the bay area. yes. you already know this if you've looked outside the window. there is more of it. this is what it looked like this morning driving on the bay bridge. you can see the windshield wipers in full effectful this is what it looked like on the peninsula. really started to accumulate in daly city and san ramon, people with umbrellas, wet roads, wet pavement, you know the drill. be careful when you're driving. and this was the season earlier this morning in san francisco. not a downpour but enough rain to make you wet and cold. you've been tracking the latest for us. what can we expect this evening? >> you mentioned the cold. we have freeze warnings in place and frost advisories heading into tonight and tomorrow. so this is going into this evening. you can see how beautiful it looks. we've got the cloud cover. this will be the tail end of it. we're seeing the rain push through. so this is satellite radar. you can see this and plenty of sierra snow. i want to zoom this in using our doppler storm r

things cleared out in the bay area. still some lingering snow showers up toward shasta, but off the coastline. we've got the atmospheric river event setting up the pineapple express, getting its name because or originating down near the hawaiian islands. all that subtropical moisture getting in trained by a low that's going to be dropping down in the gulf of alaska. all of a sudden that takes aim at the bay area. we're talking about tremendous amounts of rain. morning rain tomorrow. i think that the time has moved up a bit. heavy rain, gusty winds as we head toward the mi

may be the heaviest around the bay area. by the time we had it up to go along with that, we're seeing some very gusty winds, daly city now in this last hour, just recording a gust of 43 miles an hour, 40 mile an hour winds in the richmond district right now. 36 at sfo. wow. check out pacific. a 53 mile an hour gusts there over the mountain tops 57 mile an hour things are really starting to ramp up as far as the winds are concerned and that will likely bring down some trees and some power lines throughout the night. almost inevitably you're going to see some of that happening. a gusty winds even inside the bay now. but you can see that especially over the mountain tops get over the oakland hills. you can see moraga looking for some 36 mile an hour gust 40 in the lafayette. so some very gusty winds developing outside now to go along with that storm system. and that makes even more dangerous likely lose some power in spots tonight to keep flashlights handy. a wind advisory, of course, posted for the entire bay area for those gus

also some wind damage out there stretching all across the bay area from the north bay. well, to our north, we have some wind damage there. great yet some damage in that area. then you work your way down the coastline into san francisco. some trees down some power lines there in the half. moon bay, we have some issues there. hillsborough trees down, blocking the roadways there. and this is how was the most of it a difficult day for a police departments and fire departments to handle all the calls with all these trees coming down all around the bay area. do a little strong, gusty winds. but the good news is those winds begin to back off. now, you can see just the last few hours here, those winds begin to calm down a little bit so that i think that trend will continue throughout the night tonight. those winds will continue to fall back a bit. the storm system, though, not done just yet. it is taking aim now not at the bay area. now the atmospheric river sliding into southern california. so they're going to see more heavy rain coming for them. maybe even some more flooding f

the east bay, and primarily in the south bay. but we are seeing at all throughout the service territory and throughout the bay area, the nine counties. are meteorology team has been tracking this well in advance -- our meteorology team has been tracking this will in advance. we were able to make sure that we brought crews in from other areas that would be lesser hit. they have come to the bay area to provide support. we are just working around the clock to make sure that our customers are safely restored. but our first priority right now really is making sure that our communities are safe. so we are going out to areas that may have downed power lines due to vegetation, trees coming down into poles, and making sure that areas are safe for the communities. kristen: let's pull that map back up. i want to focus on the areas i see a lot of outages, in the office park area, facebook has got an office there. in san jose, also a lot of companies. can you talk about what kind of companies and businesses, or residential are being impacted and to what extent they are getting their power backup? >> with the outage numbers this high, it is true

but let's zoom in on the bay area and see what's going on in the north bay. scattered outages. most of them relatively small, fewer than 50 customers in these green areas. the yellow signifies up to 500 customers don't have power, but even then not a lot of yellow on this map, even in the east bay, in the city on the peninsula. but then he head towards the south bay. here's our biggest problem in the bay area. and this is in the los altos hills area. this is up to 5,000 customers who do not have power. this is both sides of interstate 2.80, off of moody road in los altos hills. so that's the biggest problem in the immediate bay area. but the biggest problem in northern california is in one of the prettiest spots on earth. we're talking about carmel, pebble beach in monterey. look at this. most of that area around 17 mile drive is in the dark tonight. monterey, large portions of that are dark carmel, carmel beach. the power's out. carmel valley road heading up into the valley. more outages. so that area really hit hard right now by the storms. there are crews coming in from the w

socal creek also around the bay area. d see some flooding as well along some of our smaller creeks and streams here, too. tomorrow morning about 02:00am. that's when the storm really starts to come in. coming in the wave after wave of heavy rainfall to 4 o'clock in the morning. and even further than that strong gusty winds to go along with that, too, right there before 06:00am just very stormy in the north bay and all around the bay area. those gusty winds will be howling. some gusts 50 to 70 miles per hour. turning the showers behind that, though, and then more widely scattered showers in the afternoon. another band comes in by tomorrow evening. but i think overall things will begin to settle down a bit after that. that said, we've got some stormy weather on the way. a little bit of a break on wednesday and thursday, slight chance of more rain as we get into next sunday. >> and now kron 4 sports. >> the rich are getting richer on day one of free agency. the niners have agreed to terms of free agent defensive tackle john h

and this will impact the north bay as well as the core of the bay area. again, that's mid-afternoon tomorrow. conditions calm down again after that. but we'll see a resurgence of moisture on into sunday morning and some really heavy rainfall. the start the day on sunday saturday morning. a good day for errands sunday morning. a good day for making breakfast at home. as for our rainfall totals as we make our way through the weekend, we've got another inch of rain expected for most areas and we'll have even more on top of that into early next week. the sierra nevada under winter storm warnings above 7,000 feet. and it still is piling up in feet between last night's system and what we see monday of next week. we have in some spots an additional 10 feet of snowfall about to be coming down in the sierra. as for lake level at lake tahoe, it's a little too warm for that snow. it's kind of rain. snow mix in a slushy mess right around there. bay area has her own flood concerns with flood advisories extended through sunday. as we do see continued active weather this

dan: so much damage all over the bay area. in the east bay, caltrans says it could take weeks to complete a fix of the storm damaged lanes of eastbound 80. all the rain undermined a section of the retaining wall next to the freeway. the erosion has also caused the crack on the freeway, forcing the closure of two lanes, leaving only two lanes open to traffic. >> the first chance we get at son, we will re-stripe the lanes on the mainline and get another lame back. we will push into the median and that will help relieve some of the congestion. dan: the temporary fix would likely involve the installation of piles to prop up the true lanes. eventually, they may have to be rebuilt. they are trying to assess that now. a tree is to blame for this to rail meant of an amtrak train in contra costa county. the train to railed about 3:25, a half mile east of port costa. no one on board was hurt. all were taken to the martinez station. the derailment is leading to major delays on capital cord or surface between the bay area and sacramento. a

it is just going to rip around the bay area. see all the colors rolling in the going along with that some heavy rain, the possibility of flooding. a lot of trees coming down. a lot of power outages around the bay area. thank you, lawrence. well, a flooding disaster when a river burst through a levee in monterey county, roughly. >> 16,000 residents are under evacuation warnings and orders because of the roe river levee breach. monterey county officials say the river levee breaches 400 feet wide. the river separates santa cruz and monterey counties. people are being told not to drink the water since area wells could be contaminated with flood waters and chemicals. all schools in valley unified school district will be closed tomorrow because of the incoming storm. this school district includes at thomas watsonville and paulo and has more than 18,000 students. >> i think i lot vision. >> and a man had to be rescued from the flooded salinas river near king city. authorities say the rising river washed his car away, but the driver than

>> it's starting to taper down but yeah, this storm system slammed the bay area. talk about slow moving, it's about the same spot it was 12 hours ago. and that's the big problem we got into. the storm system moved directly over the bay area and that's what brought us the gusty winds. check it out. santa cruz mountains, 50 to 82 miles per hour. san francisco and downtown, 77. redwood city, 69. the wind field is starting to diminish. some of the mountains in the east bay still clocking up to 50, but the wind tapering off, the rain continues to move in as the storm stalls out over the bay area. a closer look, you can see it moving north and east, along the peninsula we're concerned about tonight. a flood advisory overnight for the bay. streams are running fast. make sure the phones are charged. the creek at stanford, 10.4 feet, minor flood stage is 11. if you live around that, stay alert in the overnight. i have more details and a time line in eight minutes. >> look at the power outage numbers. more than 123,000 customers still without power. east bay has the most wit

rain has arrived back in the bay area. we're seeing heavy rain and strong winds as this latest powerful storm moves in from the pacific. it's what's known as an atmospheric river term that we have come to be very familiar with here in the bay area over the last few months, it's loaded with moisture, and this system is much different than the colder winter storms. that we're used to this time of year. joining us now to talk more about all of this is meteorologist mark tamayo with more on what we can expect with this particular storm system. we keep sort of throwing around this term atmospheric river. what? what makes an atmospheric river unique and how is it different than the other storm systems? we usually get this time of year. we want to differentiate this because i think some people think we just you know, casually throughout the term atmospheric river just called to make a storm or interesting, right? but a storm . typically, we're talking about a cold front right moves in from the north produces rain moved to the sout

showers over the north bay in the past hour or two, we will see more of those this evening, but more widespread rain will develop late evening and overnight. that will move across the bay areaearly hours of wednesday morning. we will probably have to contend with at least leftover puddles from the morning commute on wednesday, but the bulk of the rain will be gone by 9:00 or 10:00. we see sunshine the rest of the day. it will still be cold, but dry. wednesday, went to that, the first half of thursday, and then here comes the moisture, hitting the coast thursday, with the wind picking up intensely thursday afternoon. by late afternoon, heavy rain will be here, and will continue through the evening, thursday night, into early friday morning. further into friday, the showers look like they will become intermittent. that part is still up in the year, we will have to watch friday for continuing flood threat, but either way, it is more moisture on top of already saturated soil. tonight's ring, not a whole lot, less than a quarter inch most places, some place in less than a 10th. other places, we will see quite a lot more adding up as the atmospheric river arrives. anywhere from t

the firehose that is aimed at the bay area will be drifting south along the coast and move the moisture to the santa cruz mountains in the south bay and then tapers off to a shower pattern off and on throughout tomorrow afternoon and evening. often on showers tomorrow night with the rain not lasting as long, but any rain at that point could lead to deeper puddles at intersections with ramps and intersections having water problems. the best chance of rain is saturday afternoon for the north bay, but that could occur at any point in time across all of the bay area. this weather pattern is impossible to pin down the placement of the heaviest downpours. more waves headed toward saturday into sunday with gaps in between which will help. we are not done yet. through midday sunday on a widespread basis we are talking up to three inches of total rain with higher elevations picking up nearly 4 and half inches. that is in the santa cruz mountains. we have the burn scar from the fire in 2020 adding up the rain on the periphery of the burn scar we have 3 to 5 inches totaonop of the e l ch have adde

this is the time we get crews from other areas that maybe lesser hits. we bring them into the baya to the areas that we expect are going to be hit we also have our vegetation teams out there out 3.65 365 days. a year doing work, but it's especially important during this time because vegetation is one of the major causes power outages during storms. it's because of those gusty winds and we are going to experience the gusts during the storm. we're also going to be experiencing warmer weather during the storm which can lead to that is something that we want people to really be aware of. the mindful creeks and streams may flood during the storm be safe. it is something that can cause access issues for our crews. but at this time we have a plan in place. we've got our technology that helps us determine where we expect the most power outages where we need to have our crews standing by and ready to roll all. it's good to hear that you guys got crews preposition to try to jump on these problems as they pop up. >> for anybody watching who let's say during the course of the storm comes acro

we are dealing with an active doppler throughout the bay area. we are waking up to scattered showers as this system sweeps in from offshore. let's zoom in closer to home. friends in the north bay have been dealing with lingering showers all morning for example near petaluma, santa rosa. the higher elevated areas near lake county, they're seeing snow. we are under a winter weather advisory until 10:00 a.m. for levels above 1,500 feet throughout the bay area. i will highlight that more in the next 15 minutes. let's zoom down to the santa clara valley. it is dry now but look at the showers offshore. this is near half moon bay. that will sweep throughout santa cruz mountains and we will see moisture there too. we are waking up and getting ready for our workday and there are mostly 30s and 40s. it is a chilly start especially in santa rosa with 38 degrees there. 37 livermore. throughout the morning hours, look at our wind speeds, nothing too extreme as this system sweeps in. rain is still wrapping throughout santa clara valley into the 10:00 hour. stil

so it's not just the heavy rain that areas along the coast in the bay area as well as the santa cruzns are going to be experiencing. but also the very strong winds. this a storm that is going to be packing really the worst punch from the winds rather than even the rains, which as you know, it was coming down heavy this morning. showers stretch all the way up and down the california coastline and taking a look at the bay area, some of those deep red and orange areas up in the santa cruz mountains now transitioning a little further northward and dropping right into san jose, the urban area that's going to have the biggest punch as far as rainfall goes from the system. we are seeing moderate even heavy showers further north from there as well. but as you can see, regardless of where you're at in the bay area, it is raining right now. lightest of rain up in santa rosa area. very heaviest of it right around san jose. currently now we do have flooding concerns because of this heavy, intense rainfall stretching along the coast of san mateo county into the santa cruz mountains in down into t

dan: so much damage all over the bay area. in the east bay, caltrans says it could take weeks to complete a fix of the storm damaged lanes of eastbound 80. all the rain undermined a section of the retaining wall next to the freeway. the erosion has also caused the crack on the freeway, forcing the closure of two lanes, leaving only two lanes open to traffic. >> the first chance we get at son, we will re-stripe the lanes on the mainline and get another lame back. we will push into the median and that will help relieve some of the congestion. dan: the temporary fix would likely involve the installation of piles to prop up the true lanes. eventually, they may have to be rebuilt. they are trying to assess that now. a tree is to blame for this to rail meant of an amtrak train in contra costa county. the train to railed about 3:25, a half mile east of port costa. no one on board was hurt. all were taken to the martinez station. the derailment is leading to major delays on capital cord or surface between the bay area and sacramento. a

as the rain moves into the bay area, the south bay, seeing some sprinkles now ahead of an expected day luge in the hours to come. the mayor of san jose update storm preparations later this afternoon. city crews have already taken action. they're working 24 hours a day. they're monitoring low lying areas where we typically see flooding. the responding of those calls and then in between calls, they're checking storm drains to make sure they're not covered by debris, and they're clearing leaves and other trash that maybe upstream from them. people living in mountain communities are also bracing for problems from today's storm. felton resident daniel alexander says he still has mounds of mud left over from january's rain. there's as much as eight inches of rain forecast for the santa cruz mountains. to hear that we've got another atmospheric river, which has now become my two favorite words not ah! oh, man. it's pretty. it's pretty brutal. mayor matt mehan went out to encourage on housed creek side residents to evacuate an early january after new year's flooding, and he's expected to do th

the east bay, as well as the south bay. this is going to be clearing for the afternoon. we're preparing for this. all of the clouds, the arealow pressure, and the high amount of moisture that's going to be pumped in from hawaii straight into the bay area. we call that an atmospheric river. this quick morning shower, once again, and then we have an aerial flood watch that's been put up for the entire bay area as we're preparing for 3 to 7 inches of rainfall. this will increase the threat of landslides and mudslides, as well as high winds kicking up as the storm system arrives, 20 to 50 miles per hour winds, could cause power outages, down some trees. you do want to make sure you're starting to prepare for the potential of not having power for a while. now, we're also going to see sierra snowmelt, about 4,000 feet in elevation and below, and there could be up to 5 feet of snow in some higher elevations. so once again, the rain we're seeing now will be clearing out and that will be the time to clear the storm drains, make sure everything around the house is ready for a lot of rain we'll see coming in tomorrow afternoon. it con

let's check out temperatures around the bay area tomorrow are looking to cool numbers in the san francisco bit. windy in the afternoon to specially along the coastline. 52 bundle up the pacific at 52 and half moon bay inside the bay. 54 in millbrae. 55 degrees in burlingame. you're looking at 53 in woodside. 58 in mount view, the south bay. those temperatures probably about the mid to upper 50's. so stay on the cool side. but lots of sunshine there. 59 1 of the warmer spots and live more 58 in hayward. 55 in castro valley about 59 degrees in walnut creek. as you make your way back toward the coastline, those winds really going to kick up and temperatures just a low. it is going to feel chilly out there, too. so next couple days say we keep things mostly dry. there's a slight chance you could see a sprinkle into that period but mostly dry and then storm clouds roll back in on monday. by next tuesday, we get hit by another storm system right now. looks like a very potent storm. hopefully the track will change in the forecast. but right now, i think this is the time to get ready. and we've go

but it will bring more rain to the bay area. one-and-a-half to three inches of rain in the seven day outlook from the climate prediction center. a lot of this would fall into the tuesday time frame. it is always a problem with the atmospheric wind gusts. the snow will continue adding up through the weekend. in the sierra, another two to three feet of snow at the the highest elevations. and then, more snow with that atmospheric river. we are talking anywhere from six to seven feet of snow indicating by some of the forecast model. that's on top of what is already out there. it is nice to see some sunshine peeking through the clouds. temperatures didn't warm up a lot. but we had a few spots that cracked 60. now everybody is in the 50s . we will drop down to the 40s tonight which brace yourself is normal for this time of year. very little about our weather has been normal lately tomorrow, still cooler than where we are supposed to be this time of year. mid to upper 50s . in the afternoon, we see the best chance of showers. some of th

it's going to give us the best view of both the north bay, the south bay, all around the bay area, asoves in. and right now it's mainly the north bay that's getting the more widespread rain, but we're also seeing some pockets of some heavier downpours, not only for solano county, but moving into contra costa county as well. so a closer look at the north bnow for the upper elevations, with spotty activity the farther south you go. we've seen the wave of rain moving around the mount diablo area. elsewhere, we are seeing lighter showers moving through for the peninsula, widening out the view so you can see how this storm continues to evolve and strengthen, even though the lows are going to stay off the coast of the bay area, it's also going to have a pretty big impact. last week we had the same kind of storm, but it dropped right over us, and that's the reason why it brought down a lot more trees. so here is where we rank our year, how this basically stacks up to our previous years. san francisco rainfall so far measuring over 30 inches, and the last time we had this much rain was 2005.
