. >> breanna is a recent graduate and avid surfer, she spends as much time as she can on the surf. but on dry land, she says she and her brother boyfriend struggle financially. >> it was almost $5000 for a two bedroom, which is crazy especially for people our age to try to even imagine affording something like that. >> the coalition study found that the county edged out san francisco as one of the most expensive and least affordable places to live in the state and country. in california, renters would have to work almost 3 full-time minimum wage jobs to make rent for a two-bedroom apartment. and that number was more than four minimum wage jobs for a single apartment in santa cruz. >> there's a lot of low-wage workers that don't earn enough to afford a two bedroom apartment, they don't earn enough to even afford a one bedroom. >> reporter: the study is in many ways the index and more money spent on rent means less money for everything else. >> low income families that spend more than half of their income on rent, they spend less on food, they spend less on educational activities for

they continue to threaten to kill breanna. at that point i hung up and collapse of the floor in relief. i called the police to pursue the matter and was met that it was a prank call. it happened often and there's nothing to be done. they offered to have a police officer contact me from an unknown number as authorities are calling from block numbers but that's all they could offer. that did not make me feel better. no actual crime had been committed so no physical kidnapping had taken place and no money was transferred. if it was the end then how does this nightmare ever stop? i spent all night awake with fear. how did they get her voice, her crying, her sobs. she is not a very public person. was she cyber stalked? i'd turn to the community in this response was overwhelming. the neighbors came out with their stories. bags of money being driven to mexico in the voices of young children. the stories kept pouring in. my own mother received a phone call of my brothers voice asking for money for a hospital bill. they said nothing co

that breanna?t approved what will be the state's first taxpayer funded school. the archdiocese will run this school for k through 12, but the government is already getting fierce backlash. the state's republican attorney general calling the approval unconsti unconstitutional. let's bring in ed laf darrah on this story. is they planning legal action? >> there's no question this is headed for the courts. but this is known as the oklahoma statewide virtual charter school board, which many probably didn't know existed 24 hours ago is sending shock waves through the education community, crass the country. this is the board that approved the application by the archdiocese of oklahoma city and tulsa to open up the adore of s vil charter school. this happened during a three hoff hour debate yesterday. the board voted 3-2 to grant the application for the school to open up in the fall of 2024 with an initial enrollment of about 500 students. this approve has shent shock waves through the education community,

breanna continued with mom i messed up crying and sobbing continually.ot thinking twice i asked her again what happened. suddenly a man's voice barked at her lay down, put your head back. at that moment i started to panic. my concern escalated as i demanded to know what was going on. nothing could have prepared me for her response. mom these bad men have me, help me. she begged and pleaded as the phone was taken from her, a threatening older man took the call over. listen here i have your daughter. if you call anybody or the police i am going to pop her so full of drugs i will have my way with her and you will never see her again. as i had my hands shaking on the door handle of the dance studio i ran inside and started screaming for help. the next few minutes were every parent's nightmare. i was fortunate to have a couple moms there who knew me well and they went to action. one mom ran outside and called 911. my younger daughter was standing there listening to all the threats this man was making to hit -- her sister. i needed her help and asked her to ca

this was supposed to have a jury selection today, breanna. you hit the nail on the head.this starting and they came forward and said, this isn't going to be moving forward, and they have resolved things amicably, the two parties involved. this woman's identity has been anonymous the entire time. the judge ruling friday she would have to reveal herself in order for the trial to go forward. two sources telling me this fell apart as soon as that happened friday and lawyers were both sides were going back and forth all weekend trying to figure this out and coming to some sort of an amicable resolution, and we are still waiting on the details of that. i just want to be clear that this woman, she claims that cuba gooding jr. raped her this 2013 at a hotel in manhattan, and when she filed this, it was under the new york city victims of gender motivated violence protection law, which allowed her to keep her anonymity up until friday when the wheels essentially fell off this case. >> this isn't the first time, we should note, that cuba gooding jr. has been in the headlines for leg

our bureau chief, todd, breanna, are executives, nikki -- i also want to thank our team that made this writer. vice is an incredible and unique platform for stories of consequence and i'm so grateful to be part of the team that believes deeply in reporting like this. election workers are at the center of this story and i am humbled those individuals let us into their lives in this extremely vulnerable moment. richard of fulton county, deidre, al schmidt of philadelphia, and roxanne of cedar rapids, these are the bureaucrats who work tirelessly to defend our democracy. i want to share with you all, the election workers featured in our reporting, of the five that we spoke to, four are no longer working in our elections. that includes rick who i spoke to on the phone today. i would like to share some of his reflections. i resent shortly after the 2020 elections in part because of the stream of the threats made against him. he described symptoms of ptsd and his daughter in a constant state of stress. he has struggled to find work since that time. he drives uber and he is still unemployed.
